Spring 2016Lampeter-Strasburg School District
Dear Resident,Lampeter-Strasburg School District students have had very successful fall and winter seasons. Students excelled in the classroom, as well as with extra-curricular activities and sports. Many of these items are highlighted in this edition of the Pioneer Review.Like many of you, we are enjoying the warmer temperatures and the absence of snow that blanketed our area for the winter. For those who have driven around campus recently, you may have noticed that Pioneer Field (located in JK Mechanical Stadium) appears to always be covered with a layer of snow. e white covering on this eld is actually a turf blanket that serves a number of purposes. It shields the eld from wind, ice, snow, and frost, while also promoting faster growth and green-up in the spring by warming the soil and air temperature as sunlight passes through the blanket. ese blankets are a component of the District’s Outdoor Athletic Campus Enhancement Master Plan and are utilized on high use areas on athletic elds around campus. e entire plan is available on our District Web site at www.L-Spioneers.org. From the homepage, click on Master Athletic Facility Plan located under Quick Links. is site includes a one page overview of the staged recommendations and status of each project.I encourage all community stakeholders to keep up to date on the great things occurring in our schools on a daily basis through our District Web site. ank you for your continued support of our mission.

Winter is No Match for the L-S Buildings and Grounds Team
This January, the historic Blizzard of 2016 covered Lancaster County with more than two feet of snow. The very next day, our dedicated team shoveled, plowed, and cleared the way for classes to resume after only one missed day. Every time winter weather strikes, our buildings and grounds crew works long hours, often in inclement conditions, to ensure that campus roads and side-walks are safe and that school can open as soon as possible. Thank you for all that you do each and every year!
FFA AWARDSThe Garden Spot FFA held its annual banquet on March 17, 2016. PA Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding and PA State FFA Chaplain Johnathan Noss each delivered remarks to kick off the festivities. Three Discovery Degrees, six Greenhand Degrees, and three Chapter Degrees were awarded. Sarah Hess and Connor Ranck were recognized as Lancaster County Red Rose Degree winners, while Donovan Weaver, Matt Harnish, Mark Mellinger,
Sarah Hess, and Jesse Diller took home State Keystone Degrees. A number of other awards were announced, including the Garden Spot Profi ciency Award sponsored byDr. and Mrs. Scott Rimmer. That award went to senior Matt Harnish, as did the State FFA Profi ciency Award.
The evening ended with a tribute to Garden Spot FFA advisor Mr. Stephen Smith, who will retire from L-S at the end of this school year. Mr. Smith was applauded for his work with the group and for his 40-year career in education. Congratulations to Mr. Smith and all of the FFA members for a great year!

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION A Learning Initiative
Aligned with our District goal to increase the utilization of technology to enhance student learning and achievement in every classroom, a three-year technology integration plan has been developed. This plan will continue to increase the number of devices in classroooms in grades K-4 and will result in each student in grades 5-12 having his or her own District-issued device. The table below outlines the three-year rollout for devices.
This increased integration of technology will enhance student learning by providing:
• tools for collaborative learning,• personalized learning,• access to resources online, including, but not limited to content, textbooks, experts, videos, etc.,
• the ability for every student to complete classwork and assessments online,• increased digital citizenship, and• anytime, anywhere learning!
Additional information will be forthcoming to families of students who will participate in our initial Grade 5 pilot program in the 2016-2017 school year. Questions should be directed to Hans Herr Elementary School administration.
