What is pH?

pHisoneofthemostcommonanalysesinsoilandwatertesting.Anindicationofthesamplesacidity,pHisactuallyameasurementoftheactivityof

hydrogen

ions

in

the

sample.

pHmeasurementsrunonascalefrom0-14,with7.0consideredneutral.ThosesolutionswithapHbelow7.0areconsideredacids,andthoseabove7.0aredesignatedbases.ThepHscaleislogarithmic,soaoneunitchangeinpHactuallyreflectsaten-foldchangeintheacidity.Forinstance,orangejuice(pH4)istentimesmoreacidicthancottagecheese,whichhasapHof5.ManyindustriesrelyheavilyonpHfortheirprocessestoworkproperly,ortomaintainexpensiveequipment.BreweriesmaintainthepHbetween4.2and4.6tokeepinfectiousbacteriafrombreedingduringthefermentationprocess.Inmanyindustrialapplications,ifthepHistoolowthewatermaycorrodemetalequipment,butifitistoohighscalingmayresult.pHcanbemeasuredvisuallyorelectronically.VisualcomparisonsuseapHindicatorwhosecolorchangereflectsthepH,whichisthenmatchedtoacolorstandard.pHmeters,suchasthepH5,simplifythepHtest.Aprobeisplacedinthesample,andthepHisreaddirectlyfromthemeter.Whilethemeterisveryeasytouse,theelectronicswithinthemeteraremorecomplex.AfterthepHprobemeasuresthemillivoltsofpotentialbetweenthereferenceelectrodeandthepHelectrode,themeterconvertsthisreadingtopHunitsusingtheNernstEquation:

The pH 5 Meter

The pH5meterconsistsofthreemajorcomponents:thepHprobe,thetemperatureprobeandthemeter.ThepHprobeconsistsofaglass,hydrogen-ionselectiveelectrode,andareferenceelectrode,combinedintoasingleunit.Theglasselectrodeisspeciallytreatedtomeasureonlyhydrogenions,whilethereferenceelectrodeissilversurroundedbysilverchloride.Itprovidesazeroorreferencepointforthemeasurement.Thiszeropointmeansanychangeinpotentialmeasuredattheglasselectrodeisattributedtohydrogenions,andthereforeisexpressedaspH.WhenthetemperatureandpHprobesareimmersedinthesample,themetermeasuresthedifferenceinpotentialbetweentheglasselectrodeandthereferenceelectrode.ThiselectronicmeasurementisconvertedfrommillivoltstopHunits,andtheresultappearsonthedisplay.If,forsomereason,thetemperatureprobecannotbeusedduringthepHmeasurement,themeterwillassumeatemperatureof25C.Themeterhasaprotectiverubberboot.
