President's Message

Dear Lambda Sigma Sisters,

I am finding that the old saying, “Life is like a toilet paper roll – the closer you get to the end, thefaster it goes,” is certainly true. This is my teacher retirement year, my son married a delightful younglady this November, we have celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas, and it is now a new year. Zoom! Ihave experienced many joys with family and friends in 2010, as I am sure you have also.

Those who attended our progressive dinner on December 7th all agree that it was an outstanding,delicious, full-filled evening. We are already looking forward to making it an annual Lambda Sigmaevent. We thank Linda Russell and Andrea Fine, along with their committee members, for spearheadingthis social. Pat Schroyer, Mary Ann Dolezal, Harriet Mantini, and Debbie Reynolds opened their lovelyhomes for the courses of the dinner. We appreciate everyone for their efforts to make this such adelightful and memorable Christmas dinner party.

Lambda Sigma is going to keep us busy for the rest of this school year! Get out your new 2011calendar and mark Saturday, January 22, for our meeting at the University of Houston, Sugar Land

Campus, 10:00 a.m., followed by lunch at the Black Walnut Café. Our Area 4 Coordinator, BeverlyRichard, may attend this meeting. I hope we will have a well-attended turnout. Applications for nominating new members will be provided, so be thinking of good prospective sisters to invite into our chapter.

We have been invited to attend a Mid-Winter Conference hosted by our San Antonio (Beta Tau)sisters from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Region 20 Education ServiceCenter in San Antonio. Registration of $20 is due by January 10. If you are interested, check our Lambda Sigma website for the details.

Instead of having our raffle at the February 22nd meeting, we are going to have a book sale as wehave in the past. So, be saving those books and paperbacks to bring. I always come away with somewonderful books and Lambda Sigma raises money for our grant-in-aid fund.

Mary Ann Dolezal has taken our art and school supply items to the Juvenile Detention Center.

They were gratefully received and were certainly appreciated. Thanks for all of your donations. Our nextproject is for Cinderella/Cinderfella. Be thinking about what you can donate for this worthwhile endeavor.News will be sent out concerning this.

I hope your Christmas and New Year holiday was filled with love, joy, and peace. I also pray that2011 brings each of you good health and happiness.

Committee – Chair, Peggy Norman

This committee updates the chapter rules andkeeps membership aware of legislative issues

Peggy Norman is a charter member of LambdaSigma and a past president. Peggy taught for 38years and retired in 2005. Most of her yearsteaching were at Meadows Elementary andSugar Land Middle School. Peggy and husbandRichard have a son, Todd and a daughter,Meggan. They are blessed to have threegrandchildren. Peggy can be found most days ateither a school or at church. She enjoysvolunteering as a mentor at the Meadows andworking for FBISD's Project Invest programmentoring first year teachers. Peggy also enjoysMerry Ministries Bible study, the beach andspending time with family and friends.

Margaret Dzierzanowski was born and raisedin Palestine, Texas. She graduated from SFA in1960 with a B.S.degree. Margaret has beenmarried to Frank for 47 years and has two sons,Lee and David. They also have grandsons andgranddaughters. Margaret taught 3rd grade inHISD for 4 years before coming to FBISD andteaching 4th grade and serving as team leader for 26 years, all at Lakeview Elementary. Shehas been a member of DKG since 1972 and is acharter member of Lambda Sigma. Margarethas been retired since 1994. She likes to travel,read, and spend time with her grandchildren,family and friends.

Carolyn Hynes came to Fort Bend ISD to join ateaching staff and student body, consolidatedfrom Sugar Land, Stafford, Missouri City, andsurrounding areas, in establishing the new JohnFoster Dulles High School. Principals E.A. Jonesand Edward Earnest also brought with themexcellent athletic and music departments. Manyadditional students arrived by the bus daily from

the surrounding ranches and farms. Carolynoccupied classrooms in the Missouri City schoolcomplex temporarily while they developed theacademic curriculum and planned the newcampus and buildings.What fun they had helping each student tobecome curious about the great ideas inliterature, science, math and the arts; to explorethese ideas; to express their own conclusionssuccinctly and well.These Dulles students are now leaders in manyareas of our community and beyond. After more

than sixty years as an educator on many levelsin Texas and California, Carolyn is yet guided bythe Latin motto”: Crescat scientia,vita excolatur.”Let knowledge grow; let life be enriched.

Carolyn Madden is a charter member of Lambda Sigma Chapter. She taught for 31years; 29 in this district at Lakeview Elementary.Carolyn is married to Corky Madden, retiredprincipal of Sugar Land Middle School. Theyhave two children, Mitzi and Mike and fivegrandchildren. Carolyn enjoys traveling, having

dinner with friends, reading, Bible Study, days atLake Conroe, babysitting, visiting older grandchildren at A&M, and shopping!

Dawn Westfallreceived anEd.D inCurriculum andInstruction withan emphasis inLanguage Artsfrom theUniversity of HoustonDecember 17,2010. She waschosen to

represent the College of Education asbanner bearer for the commencement. Shewas thrilled to do it! The title of Dawn’sdissertation was Parental Perceptions of theEffects of the High-Stakes TAKS Test onthe Home Lives of At-Risk 5 th GradeStudents. She received $6500 in DKG statescholarship money and a local chapter grantfrom her previous chapter as well. Dawn is

going to continue in her present position asAP at LCE and then eventually apply to be aprincipal. She hopes to teach some readingclasses for UH as an adjunct professor inthe future, but this semester her plans are toread whatever she wants and to be a mom.

In mid-January, Vicky Hemme and her husband will be visiting San Diego and thentaking a 9 day cruise to portions of the"Mexican Riviera".

McKinley AyumiCain was born onSeptember 8, 2110to proud parents;Eric and KimberlyCain andgrandparents;Sally and RussellCain. Sheweighed 6 pounds14 ounces. Kim

and Eric taught inJapan for two years. They now live inRichmond, Texas and teach geography. Sheis the first grandchild on both sides.

LCE Library - 4:30 p.m.

I. Purchase of raffle tickets – meet and greetII. President Cathie Ritchie called the meeting to order at 4:35. Joan Eubanks read the

inspiration.

III. Tracy Hoke, CFO of FBISD, spoke on finances of FB and how the state’s funds are

given to the district

IV. Officers’ Reportsa. Lana Petrizzo – presented the minutes of the September meeting. The minutes

were approved. b. Linda Russell, 1st VP, discussed the Progressive dinner on Dec. 7, 5:30 – 9:00.

* UH Scholarship - Jan. 11, come to a meeting at 7:00 where we can discuss our scholarship with FB students.

* Jan. 22 meeting will be held at U of H Sugar Land where the Ed. Dept. willsponsor our meeting. We will tour the campus, library, and nursing school.

c. Sally Cain, 2nd VP, reported there were 25 members and 1 guest, Suzanne Neal,in attendance. We welcomed Dawn Westfall, who transferred her membershipfrom the Alief chapter.

d. Dale Araujo delivered the Treasurer’s report. Our balance began with $6393.46and we sent $3414.00 to state and international leaving a balance of $2979.46.We earned $100 at the auction during Sept. meeting.

V. Committee Reports: Yearbook – Mary Crochet reported the yearbook was close tobeing complete.

VI. Unfinished Business:
