Panthers hope to turn it aroundBy Dick Peecher

    The Lamar Ledger

The Wiley Panthers havebattled through a couple oftough years in boys basket-ball.

If want to means anything, the Panthers ought to be ableto improve on their 3-16 re-cord from a year ago.

Wiley will be led by theirtwo leading scorers from ayear ago. Junior Kody Wall-ace, a 6-1 gym rat according toveteran coach Brian Dunning, will lead the way, while fellowunior Matt Aguilera will add

    quickness and some defensivetoughness.

Those two guys will defi-nitely be our go-to guys, saidDunning. It will be importantor them to keep our team

going and provide the leader-ship that we need.

Wiley will have some goodsize in the paint with the likesof Patrick Gonzales, a 5-11,

240 sophomore. Caleb Herre-ra, a 6-3 junior, will add addi-tional size and some shootingtouch.

The Panthers only senior,Alex Mullins, will see time inthe starting rotation as well.

Dunning hopes that juniorEric Marquez, sophomoreZach Sparks, and freshmanSeaton Wollert will all contrib-ute valuable minutes as well.

I want these guys to im-prove every single day. That isout number one goal, Dun-ning said. I think that if theycontinue with the work ethicthey have displayed so far, that we can really surprisesome people. We want to be a

tough out for everyone that weplay. I think that it is very im-portant that we continue in de-

veloping our mental approachand great attitude.

With only 13 players out,the boys will play one half of

JV games to give their youn-ger players more playing time.

Lady Panthers loaded for another strong runBy Dick Peecher

    The Lamar Ledger

Certainly one of the power-house teams in southeasternColorado this year will be theWiley High School girls bas-ketball team.

Coming off their secondstraight appearance in theClass 1A state tournament, theLady Panthers, 16-9 a yearago, might have a chip ontheir shoulder proving thattheir quick exit at state a yearago was an anomaly.

Returning three starters andplenty of firepower off lastyears bench, Wiley will cer-

tainly be one of the teams tobeat in District 3 and the area.

The Lady Panthers, the2010 state tournament runner-up, had many up-and-downmoments a year ago.

One of our problems a yearago was that we were just toobalanced almost, said WileysBrian Dunning, the only coachin the area doing double duty, serving as head coach for boththe boys and girls. It turnedout to be our Achilles heel, inthat we didnt have a go-to girlwhen it came down to crunchtime. And it showed in our big

games. We lost several gameslast year that we shouldnthave lost.

Their leading scorer from a year ago, 6-0 senior Taylin

Spitzer, returns to lead theway for the Lady Panthers. Av-eraging just over 10 points agame a year ago, Dunning

would like to see her improveon that figure this year.

Teri Johnsen, a 5-10 junior, returns as well, and she willprovide valuable scoring in-side and out.

Diminutive point guard KimStates will guide the Lady Pan-thers offense and also providesome tough defensive leader-ship.

Senior Desiree Daniels willbe tough under the basketalong w ith juniors BethMcDougal and Amber Torrezto give Wiley a strong group inthe paint.

Senior Erika Ragland, alongwith juniors Sabra Perdue andMaggie Schneider, will giveDunning an equally strongcore to work with outside.

I think that it is really im-portant that this group stay fo-cused; that means every day atpractice and every game that

we play, said Dunning. We want to get away from thatroller coaster that we were on

last year. We have never beendistrict champions, and that iscertainly one of our goals.

The Lamar High Schoolwrestling team has enjoyedsuccess the past two seasons.

The Savages are coming offback-to-back second place fin-ishes in the Class 3A statetournament and Lamar coachGreg Eddy would like nothingmore than to climb the top ofthe mountain.

Last year it was Alamosa, who dropped down from Class4A to 3A, and went on to winlast years state team title with178 points to secure theschools eighth state wrestlingchampionship.

The race for second placewas a close one as Lamar heldon to nip Berthoud by twopoints, 122 12 to 120 12 points.

Alamosa had a great teamand kind of ran away with itlast year, said Eddy. Theyllbe tough again this year along

    with Olathe, Centauri, and Val-ley.

    Lamar had 10 wrestlers en-

tered in last years state tour-nament and seven of themplaced.

The Savages graduated fiveseniors including state cham-pion Darrian Adame at 135pounds. Other seniors placinglast year were RemingtonStocking who placed fourth at140 and Emilio Carrillo, who

finished fifth at 189 pounds.Bailey Spitz and Tanner Has-ser were also two seniors thatcompeted at state for Lamarbut failed to place.

We had two good years in arow and weve got a few ofthose kids back from last

years team, said CoachEddy. Were excited to see if

we can improve on the per-

formances they had last year. Well also need some youngkids to step up and hopefully

we can stay in the top five. This season, Lamar will be

spearheaded by five returningstate qualifiers including fourthat placed.

Darrick Adame, a senior, will pave the way after he

placed second in the125-pound weight class a yearago.

Other returning stateplacers will include seniorsZeb Harvey, Tylor Jara, andHector Morales.

Harvey placed fifth at 145,Jara was fifth at 215, and Mo-rales was fifth at 285.

    Also qualifying for last

years state tournament wasErik Nieschburg, another sen-ior on this years team. He wasone match of reaching themedal round.

Jordan Jara also returns as astarter for the Savages. As afreshman, Jara wrestled at 119pounds and is coming off afifth place finish in the Class

    3A Region 3 Tournament.

This season, Lamar headcoach Greg Eddy has 29 pros-pects in the wrestling roomand has a good mix of upper-classmen and lower classmen.

Weve got seven seniors onthe team this year and a lot of

young kids in the practiceroom. So its a good mix, saidEddy.

The following wrestlers willbe vying at the following

    EADS BASKETBALL

Lady Eagles hope to return to the topBy Dick Peecher

    The Lamar Ledger

The Eads High School girlsbasketball team will add one ofthe top freshmen in the area toour returning starters. As a

result, the Lady Eagles couldbe the team to reckon withthis year in District 2.

In a district that has beendominated by McClave thelast several years, the District2 race will be wide open thisyear as Eads, Kit Carson, or

    cClave could claim the topspot.

Eads, under second-yearhead coach Trey Eder, justmight have the inside track.

The Lady Eagles were 12-8a year ago and would like tosignificantly increase that wintotal and return to playoff ac-tion. They have missed the re-gional and state playoffs thelast two years.

Eder will return two of histop scorers from a year ago insenior Emily Weirich and 6-0oot junior Marissa Dixon.

Plainview senior NatalyaWeber, starting for her secondyear for Eads, will add an ath-letic presence to the team.

Sophomore point guard Kai-lyn Lane will return to start forthe second year as well. Thebig addition is 6-1 sweet shoot-ing freshman Tanaia Hansen.

Hansen showed a nice shoot-ing touch in junior high andwill likely make her presenceelt immediately.

Eder will also have gooddepth coming off the bench.

    Seeing plenty of playing

time will be senior Bekah Hall-man, sophomore Dorian Ray,

    and freshmen Eboni Nash and

    Haley Ray. The freshmen

    were part of an undefeated

junior high team from a year

ago. With 14 girls out, Eads will

play a full junior varsity sched-ule as well.

We played about 20 gamesthis summer, so these girls

have already played togethersome, said Eder. Its all

    about our defense stepping up

and our ability to score. We

had times last year when we

    had great looks and great

shots, but we just couldnt putthe ball in the basket.

Eder added, We have tolearn to be able to handle con-tact when we are shooting; itis just part of the game. We

have been working hard onball movement and our ball

handling as well. This is a fair

ly big team, but we are prett

mobile for the most part. I

    should be a fun year.

Eagles boys look to turn fortunes this seasonBy Dick PeecherThe Lamar Ledger

Justin McLoud, in his sec-ond year as head coach at

Eads, is looking to turnaround the fortunes of hisboys basketball team.

Coming off a 3-17 recordrom a year ago, McLoud

hopes to rebuild the onceproud Eagle program througheffort and attitude.

I am really excited to havenew assistant coach Jay Wil-son from Plainview to help usthis year, he said. Together,we are stressing total team ef-ort and a good attitude as a

    means of turning around ourprogram.

With only 10 players out,cLoud will use a strong jun-

ior class and some outstand-ing freshmen in hopes of bet-tering the record from a yearago.

He returns three starterswith decent size in juniorsLogan Crawford, Kyle Crow, and Cory Miller.

Fellow juniors Jose Ramosand Logan Smith will be vyingor playing time this year,

along with two standout fresh-men in Taylor Bollinger, aPlainview student, and TylerRouse. Both freshmen are cur-rently battling foot problemsand are not at 100 percent butimproving daily.

We will play one half ofsome of our JV games at homeust because we want ourreshman to get that time.

Coming off the foot problems, they are going to need a littleextra time to get ready for thevarsity season, added

cLoud. With no seniors or sopho-

mores on the squad, the Ea-

gles will be very young, but

McLoud likes the fit of this

    years team.

We are definitely lookingbetter than a year ago, he

said. We have a wide open

    district with no dominant

team, so that is a good thing.

We grew up a lot last year, and

I think maturity wise that will

help us. We found out how

tough it can be out there, and

we will use that in building ou

    team this year.

Lady Savages hope experience pays offsBy John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

Erik Melgoza, heads into histhird season as the head coachof the Lamar High Schoolgirls basketball team.

Melgoza put a relativelyyoung team on the court ayear ago as the team compiledan 11-12 record.

Last year, Lamar started theseason at 1-4. The Lady Sav-ages lost their season openerto Burlington.

    In the La Junta Holiday

Shootout, Lamar sufferedlosses to Las Animas and San-ord but defeated La Junta.he Lady Savages then fell to

St. Marys prior to the holidaybreak.

Returning from the holidaybreak, Lamar won nine of 14games to end the regular sea-

son. The five losses were to

Trinidad (twice), St. Marys,James Irwin, and Peyton.

In the district tournament,Lamar won over Salida but

would suffer three straightlosses to Manitou Springs,Colorado Springs Christian, and Buena Vista to end theseason.

Lamar graduated three sen-iors from last years team soMelgoza is optimistic headinginto the 2011-2012 season. Hehopes the experience his re-turning players gained last

    year will pay dividends.

However, with only 18 play-ers on the roster includingseven freshmen, Melgoza willlack some depth at the varsitylevel.

The rest of the roster willalso include two seniors, two

    juniors, and seven sopho-mores.

    The two seniors providing

the leadership this season willbe Sydney Crist, a 5-7 guard/post and Audrey Parker, a 5-7guard.

Carrying the load under thebasket will be Summer Eber-hardt, a 5-7 sophomore; ShaySpitz, a 5-9 junior; and Lauren

    Tinnes, a 5-7 sophomore.

The backcourt for the LadySavages will feature Chelsea

Vallejos, a 5-7 sophomoreguard and Taylor Wertz, a 5-5sophomore guard.

Things are looking posi-tive, said the Lamar skipper.

This is going to be one of themost unselfish teams that Ihave been around in 10 yearsthat Ive been here. Impleased with the way thingsare going right now.

Reflecting back on last year,Melgoza said, We knew that

we were going to be really

young and had a good group

of freshmen coming in. Last year, we relied on some kids

to get the job done and things

just didnt work out the way

    we thought they would. Our

young girls were kind of ap-

    prehensive. With just about ev-

erybody back we put in some

    time during the summer and

    we played about 35 games.

Theyve just gotten a lot better

and a lot more confident and

    grown up.

Taking a look at this years

    team, Melgoza said, We have

    a really solid team coming

back. Were going to havesome good senior leadership

    with Sydney and Audrey. Syd-

ney is just a fine leader and amultiple sport athlete. Shes

    successful in anything she

does. Audrey is just an out-

    standing leader also and

    works hard.

    After those seniors, were

young, said Melgoza. Wehave Shay back who got in-

jured half way through theseason. She dedicated herselfthis summer and has comeback strong.

The sophomores we havereturning like Summer, Chel-sea, Taylor, and Lauren are

working hard and done a lot ofgood things, Melgoza said. They are the future of LadySavage basketball. We know

were going to be young but Ithink we have girls that areready to step it up and arepretty confident with where

    were at.

Melgoza said he will addsome new wrinkles on offenseand defense but will mainlystick with what the coacheshave already implemented.

Were working on refiningthe things that weve always

done, he said. We have a

philosophy with how the gameshould be played. It takes a

year or two to start under

    standing what the coaches ex

    pect. Now, our players are

doing that and the attitude is

better than Ive ever had it.

    The players are playing fo

    each other and our practices

    have been super intense. The

kids are having fun and Im

    having fun as a coach.

    On a final note, Melgoza

    said, Theres not any one

player on our team that is

    more dominant than the oth

ers. Any one of them is capable of scoring 20 points a nigh

    and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Thats kind of the attitude we

want to build and play for each

other. Our theme this year is

    We Is Greater Than Me.

    Those are the positive things

    Im seeing with these kids.

team but eager to work very

    hard to prove themselves.

Tyron Moore, Blaine Wind-er and Blake Robertson all

    wrestled last year and made

    great improvements and ac-

    The Eagles will have two

new wrestlers to the team this

reshman that shows a lot of

    heart and ability and David

New coach to direct SavagesJason Tice takesover program

    By John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

he Lamar High School boysbasketball program has suf-ered through some down and

    out seasons the past severalyears.

Jason Tice, the new headcoach for the Savages, hopeshe can steer the program inthe right direction.

Tice, the head coach for theootball team, takes over the

program with the departure ofScott Dorenkamp.

He is no stranger to the bas-ketball program and hasserved as the assistant varsitycoach, junior varsity coach, and freshman coach.

Im excited and its an op-portunity I didnt think I wasgoing to have, said Tice. Theopportunity presented itselfand somebody needed to stepin and I was willing to do thatand make sure the programcontinued to grow. I think itsimportant to keep this pro-gram moving in the right di-rection.

Tice said he wont makemany changes.

Were going to be doing alot of the same things that

Scott did, he explained. But Iwant to bring more of a defen-sive emphasis to our ap-proach. Thats not to say that

we werent defensive mindedbefore. Defense and rebound-ing is really where I want tobuild the program while Imcoaching.

The Savages are coming offa 6-14 season last year and saw

the season end on a toughnote at the hands of Salida inthe first-round of the districttournament 62-54 in overtime.

Tice welcomed some bignumbers with 42 players outfor the team including sevenseniors, 10 juniors, 12 sopho-mores, and 13 freshman.

The varsity roster will becomprised of five seniors, six

    juniors, and two sophomores.

The seniors hoping to leadthe Savages to the promisedland will be Branson Jennings,a 6-1 point guard; Isiah Marti-nez, a 5-11 guard; ThomasFierro, a 6-3 forward; ChandlerHill, a 6-0 forward; and Antho-ny Holdren, a 6-1 forward.

    Junior players that Tice willlean on will be Kaden Pierson,a 6-3 post; Dillon Slough, a 6-4post; and guards DeVantaKemp, 5-4; Josh Aguilera, 6-0;

Talon Shipman, 5-5; and JaminTate, 5-7.

Sophomores on the varsity will include Josh Davis, a 5-5

point guard, and Abel Salazar,a 5-7 guard.

I told the kids that we donthave a player thats going toscore 40 points a game, said

Tice. But we definitely have agroup of older guys who areready to play. Were really ex-pecting a lot out of some ofour seniors. It all starts withBranson and Isiah taking careof the basketball at the guard

positions and being produc-tive. Branson is going to haveto play the point guard forsome of the year and Isiah isgoing to have to be that threatfrom the outside.

Were expecting a lot out ofguys like Thomas (Fierro)

who has grown like crazy, continued Tice. Chandler(Hill) has to be productive forus as well. We expect bigthings out of Kaden (Pierson)and hes a big strong kid. Hesgoing to have to clear theglass and thats going to be hismain goal.

DeVanta Kemp is a newtransfer for the Savages who

Tice said has a lot of speedand good ball handling skills.Kemp wont be able to partici-pate in games until after theholiday break.

Were looking forward togetting DeVanta on the floor, said Tice. He definitelyspeeds things up on the floorfor us. With him in the lineupthat will allow us to moveBranson to a three guard posi-tion which is more suitable forhim.

    Tice added, Some of our

younger kids are young andtheyll have to learn. We havesome juniors and sophomores

who will have to grow in ordeto fit those backup roles ofthe bench.

Our best opportunity to besuccessful is to play good de-fense and challenge every shoand finish plays with good re-bounding, said the new

coach. Thats what we aregoing to focus on and buildfrom there. I think were gointo be a team that is big andphysical. Weve got some de-cent height and have somekids that are big and strong.

We also have some goodspeed at key positions. If wecan play defense with a physi-cal mindset, I think we cangive ourselves a chance to wingames.

We dont want to go back-wards and continue to grow,Tice went on to say. Our firsgoal is to have a winning sea-

son. Our second goal is to wintwo games in the La JuntaShootout that is coming up.

And we want to win the Tri-Peaks League East Divisionchampionship. In order to dothat, youve got to win moregames than you lose.

Looking at the Tri-PeaksLeague East Division, Ticesaid that Trinidad, DoloresHuerta, James Irwin, and La

Junta were the teams the Sav-ages struggled with in the pasas well as St. Marys.

Weve got our work cut ou

    for us, said Tice.

    WALSH BASKETBALL

Lady Eagles lack numbers but not desireBy Dick PeecherThe Lamar Ledger

Longtime Walsh coachLance Turner, in just his sec-

ond year with the girls basket-ball team though, has onlyeight girls out for this season.

There are only 14 girls inhigh school at Walsh butnonetheless, he is excitedabout the girls he is workingwith.

These girls have just beenworking so hard. They are re-ally working hard in practiceor me, he praised.

Cook will have to replacesenior Alexa Gerber, lastyears leading scorer. Gerberplayed volleyball this fall at Be-thany College in Kansas.

Turner has a solid player re-

turning in sophomore HeidiCogburn, an outstanding allsport athlete for the Lady Ea-gles.

She is our leader and justworks so hard! Heidi is justtougher than nails, a real lead-er for us. With the way sheworks, it just makes all theother girls realize what ittakes, laudedTurner.

With no seniors on the ros-ter, Turner has one junior, fivesophomores, and two fresh-men to build his team around.

Cogburn will be the leader, but Turner will have some sizein 5-10 Eva Fehr. Desiree Du-bois, Andi Hetrick, AshlynSmith and Andi Wray will getplenty of playing time.

We will be very young andinexperienced obviously. Wedont have that much speed inour lineup but they will workhard out there. We are reallyexcited about our junior highgirls out this year. We have agood number of them out andthey are playing very well soar, said Turner.

Turner feels that Springfieldand Wiley will be the teams tobeat in this years version ofDistrict 3.

They both have lots of girlsand had very good volleyball

teams, he said. I am surethat it will be the same in bas-ketball.

Eagles boys hope for repeat successBy Dick Peecher

    The Lamar Ledger

    Coming home with the third

place trophy from the Class 1A

    state tournament a year ago,

the talented Walsh boys bas-ketball team will be looking

    or more state hardware this

    year as the 2011-2012 season

    opens.

    The Eagles made their first

trip to state since 2001 after

    being close several years be-

    ore that.

    Walsh gave eventual state

    champion Caliche their tough-

est game of the tournament, alling 80-70 in the semifinals.

    he Eagles then beat Pawnee

61-58 for the third place trophy

to cap the season with a 20-5

    record.

    The Eagles graduated out-

standing point guard Laken Al-ley and role player Chris Cook

rom that team, but with abevy of talent returning theycould be in the running for a

    return trip to state.

    Veteran coach Ryan Renqu-

ist, in his fifth year at Walsh,

returns at the helm to guide

    the team.

    Returning starters feature

    seniors Jonathan England, Jax-

on Meardon, and WestonMeardon, a first-team all state

    returnee, will provide Renquist

with plenty of talent and lead-

    ership to guide the way.

Junior Jordan Jones andsophomores Chaz Hebberdand Chase Mundell look for

    more playing time this year.

    Athletic sophomor e

Christain Alvarez and seniorsCullen Hair and 6-2 EthanSharpe drew mention from

Renquist as well, providinghim with tons of depth.

Senior transfer Malacki Jac-quert, a 6-10 post player fromSwink, will give Walsh all

kinds of size once he sits outhis nine games because of theCHSAA transfer rule.

We have been working onfull court pressure defenses a

lot early in our practices so far

    this season, said Renquist.

We were only able to do that

at the end of games last yearbecause we just didnt have

    the depth.

I think with the number of

athletes that we have, we willbe able to do that this year.

We want good defense to lead

to our offense. It will just make

us that much stronger, saidRenquist, in analyzing his

team. We really arent sure of

our starters yet; they have all

looked good so far in prac-tice.

    SPRINGFIELD BASKETBALL

Lady Longhorns return solid nucelusBy Dick Peecher

    The Lamar Ledger

They will field one of the

most athletic teams in thearea, and they are coming offan appearance in the Class 1Astate volleyball tournamentthis past season.

The Springfield High Schoolgirls basketball team, just10-10 a year ago, look to dras-tically improve on that recordthis season.

Coach Mark Ricker wel-comed 21 girls out this seasonwhen basketball began, one ofthe larger squads in the area.

Rickers varsity team will be10 deep, and he returns all fivestarters.

    Seniors Alyssa Dunlap, Au-

brey Konkel, Kelby Robins, and Bailey West are all quick, athletic outside players andwill provide necessary leader-ship.

Ricker, back for his secondyear as head coach, will havethe luxury of picking betweengood inside players as well.uniors Adrienne Mondragon

and Kaylean Orlowski and6-foot sophomore Taylor Kon-kel will give the Lady Long-horns plenty of help in thepost.

Rickers athletic daughterKiri, a junior, will provide solidscoring for the Lady Long-

horns, as she can swing insideor outside.

Sophomore Madi West andunior Bre Stafford will round

    out the rotation.

Ricker is still undecidedwho his starters will be.

It is a pretty good problemto have, he said. When weplay five on five in practice it is

very, very competitive. Each ofthem has their moments out

there. I have seen a lot of firein their eyes when they play.

He hopes to play an up-tem-po game with lots of defensivepressure this season.

Springfield lost in overtimein last years District 3 semifi-

nals to Wiley. The Lady Long-horns actually had a chance to

win the game in regulation butfell just short.

We really started playingwell at the end of the season, reflected Ricker. We began

the year at 2-6 before weturned things around. I am

hoping that the confidence lev-el has gone up for these girls.I want them to know that theycan play with anyone.

    Ricker added, I am also

hoping that the success of the

    volleyball team going to state

this year will carry over into

    basketball. I really think that

we will be a force to be reck-

    oned with this year.

Longhorn boys aim at repeat trip to stateBy Dick Peecher

    The Lamar Ledger

After a 20 year absencerom the state basketball tour-

nament, the Springfield Long-horns, 18-7 a year ago, morethan made up for their inexpe-rience with a startling secondplace finish at the 2011 statetournament.

The Longhorns faced a for-midable opponent in Calichein the state title game as theBuffaloes rolled to their thirdstraight state championship.

Springfield head coach BobSchaller would like to add tothe Longhorns experience bymaking a return trip. BacaCounty was home to two of

the top three teams in thestate a year ago, and it mayalso be the same again thisyear.

Though they lost four start-ers from a year ago, includingall-state player Matt Self, thecupboard is hardly bare forSchaller.

Blessed with an outstandingsenior class, the Longhornswill field a host of seniors withtons of playing experience.

It was a lot of fun, and itwas good for us, said an en-thusiastic Schaller. Our sen-

iors want to do it all again.hey saw what it was like up

there and they want more ofthe same. We talked about itthe first day of practice thisyear. These guys are prettygung ho. All of us hope tobuild off what happened a yearago.

Senior Michael Crane re-turns as the sole starter fromlast years state runner-upteam.

Seniors Saul Baker, BradyHumphrey, Todd Hutches,

Bric Koehn, and Michael San-chez all contributed a yearago, playing lots of minutes.

Schaller will add transfersColton Surber and Caleb

Yockum to his roster as well.

Surber will have to sit out viathe transfer rule but will get tosee action in the second half ofthe season.

Junior Chase Kinard adds adefensive presence that Schal-

ler is looking for. Brody Owen-by and 6-2 junior Collin Loflin

will add valuable depth to theLonghorns roster.

This has been such an in-credible senior group. I literal-

ly have to kick them out of thegym every night. Its 8:00 andtime to go home, and they still

want to be playing. They haveinstilled in our younger guysthat great work ethic and loveof the game, added Schaller.

    GRANADA BASKETBALL

Lady Bobcats hope to turn cornerBy John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

Its been over a decadesince the glory days for theGranada High School girlsbasketball program.

In fact, Kara Dorenkampwas a senior starter on the lastGranada girls team that com-peted in a state basketballtournament in 2000. The LadyBobcats finished as state run-ners-up that year.

Dorenkamp is now the newhead coach for the programand hopes to instill new lifeinto the program.

    Im excited and the girls

have adjusted well to thethings that Ive asked them todo, said Dorenkamp. I wasthe high school assistantcoach about three years agoand had girls that didnt knowa lot about basketball. Afterasked to coach the highschool team this year, the girlsnow know so much and aremore fundamentally sound. Somaking the adjustment hasntbeen a difficult task. Basket-ball is a great sport and it feelsgood to be back in it at thislevel.

Eighteen players are out forthis years team but with onlyone senior on the roster.

Dorenkamp returns a num-ber of players who saw consid-erable playing time last yearand she hopes they are readyto help turn the corner thisseason.

    One thing the Lady Bobcats

    dont possess is height. The

    tallest players are 5-8.

That hurt us, but when I

was in high school we didnt

have any big girls per se, said

    Dorenkamp. Weve been

    working with our post players

    on foot work. Overall, were

fast and going to try to use

    that to our advantage.

    The team has plenty of

depth in the back court with

the l ikes of a number of

    guards. Leading the way will

    be Kyreth Tirado, a 5-4 senior; Ariana Yanez, a 5-7 junior;Marlena Rojas, a 5-8 junior;

Alyssa Sigala, a 5-4 junior; andKirby Vanderpool, a 5-6 sopho-more. Also expected to seeplaying time at the top of thecircle will be Brittany Gon-

zales, a 5-4 freshman.Carrying the load under the

    boards will Darcy Widener, a5-8 sophomore small forward;

Tallie Harmon, a 5-8 sopho-more small forward; and AbbyHopper, a 5-8 junior power for-

    ward.

Were young but we comeback with a little more playinexperience, Dorenkamp said. Its going to take disciplineand a hard work ethic. We improved leaps and bounds in

volleyball and that has carriedinto basketball.

Bobcats ready to take next stepBy John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

    The Granada Bobcats are

coming off a 12-9 record last

year and will look to improve

    on that mark this season.

    Looking back at last year,

    three of Granadas nine losses

came at the hands of District 2

    oe McClave. The Cardinals

    defeated Granada, 51-43, in

    the district semifinals to end

    the season for the Bobcats.

Granada also suffered twolosses to neighborhood rivalHolly and were also beaten bySpringfield, South Baca, Chey-enne Wells, and Rolla, Ks.

Veteran coach Manuel Gon-zales graduated three seniorstarters from last year, so theBobcats will have some shoesto fill.

Coach Gonzales has 20prospects out for this yearsteam.

Were going to have a de-cent team, but hopefully down

the road well get better, hesaid. Were missing threestarters from last year, but

weve got some good kidscoming back and I like what Isee.

The two returning startersinclude Bryan Gonzales, a 6-0sophomore guard/forward,and Kolby Palmer, a 6-0 juniorforward. Gonzales will be outof the lineup until he gets amedical clearance after a foot-ball injury.

    Coach Gonzales said he will

have some depth at the postand forward positions.

Players seeing duty in thepaint will be Brady Rink, a 6-0senior; Caleb Harris, a 6-2 jun-ior; Antonio Huerta, a 6-0 jun-ior; and Sam Rink, a junior.Koy Palmer, a freshman, isalso expected to see signifi-cant playing time for the Bob-cats.

Tanner Grasmick, a 6-1 jun-ior, and Cruz Vega, a 5-11 jun-ior, will see work at the for-

    ward positions.

Also directing the show inthe back court will be BryndenBurns, a 5-8 junior guard, and

    Juan Morales, a 5-8 seniorguard.

Coach Gonzales added thatSaul Perez, a junior, will givethe Bobcats more depth at theguard position. Perez is ex-pected to get medical clear-ance after January.

All these guys can play, said Gonzales. We need toget some better with our out-side shooting but I think were

going to be okay inside. Getting our inside, outside gamegoing is going to be the key toour success.

The District 2 race will bewide open this year and up fograbs between Granada, KiCarson, McClave, Eads, andCheyenne Wells.

I think we can challengeany team on any given night, said Gonzales. Will see wha

we have to work on after a fegames and then we can go onfrom there.

    HOLLY BASKETBALL

Lady Wildcats to be guided by new coachBy John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

A new but familiar face willtake over the Holly HighSchool girls basketball pro-gram.

Randy Holmen returns to thecoaching ranks for the first timein six years.

Holmens last coaching stintwas the McClave boys basket-ball team in the 2006-2007school year.

Its been a few years, butyou never get away from it,Holmen said. Im looking for-ward to this opportunity. Its funto be around the kids.

This will be the first time he

has coached a girls basketballteam but he said that he didcoach the high school girls vol-leyball team at Wiley in his firstyear of teaching in 1979.

Holmen did coach highschool boys basketball teams atWiley and Lamar as well as

cClave through his career. He also coached Wiley to a pairof baseball championships.

Holmen said he doesnt seemuch of an adjustment fromcoaching boys to coachinggirls.

Theyre athletes and theyneed to be treated that way, he

    said.Holmen inherits a Holly pro-

gram that was under the guid-ance of Bryan Weimer for thelast 10 years.

Im excited about this team,he said. Theyre working hardand responding to what weretrying to do.

    The Lady Wildcats went 12-9

last year and saw the seasonend at the hands of Kim in theClass 1A District 3 semifinals.

Holly lost three seniors fromthat team including two start-

    ers.Holmen has only 12 players

out for this years team sodepth could play a factor.

Were small in numberswith a total of 12 girls and fiveof them are freshman, ex-plained Holmen. But the play-ers that are returning have a lotof experience and understand

what its all about.Key players returning will be

    Brandi Thompson, a 5-5 seniorguard/forward and Kenzi Si-mon, a 5-11 junior post/forward.

    Also expected to contributeheavily will be Liberty Bollig, a5-5 senior forward; Lacy Dar-nell, a 5-2 sophomore guard;

    Ashlyn Hess, a 5-8 sophomoreguard/forward; Sheridan Rush-ton, a 5-10 sophomore guard/forward; Jordan Fletcher, a 5-6

junior forward.Weve got a pretty good nu-

cleus, but it would be nice tohave two or three players to fitin with them, Holmen said. But well do with what wevegot.

We dont have that one bigscorer but I think we have theplayers who can score, Hol-men said. Kenzie is going to

have to be the player who getsit done inside for us. Sheridanis a very good shooter from allspots on the floor and Ashlyn isa player who can do a lot of dif-ferent things. One player weneed to get good leadershipfrom is Brandi. She has a lot ofability and a lot of talent. Herleadership is going to be criti-cal.

Karina and Karen Avalos andHannah Kalma are the fresh-man players that will be calledupon to contribute.

Theyre going to see someaction, they have too, said Hol-

men. But again theyre fresh-men and they have a lot tolearn. Theyre working hardand getting better all the time.

The thing that makes usstrong is that theyre smart

players, said Holmen. Theyunderstand what they need todo to be successful. They needto go in there and mix it up.

Looking at other teams in thearea and in District 3, Holmen

Wildcat boys team faces rebuilding yearBy John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

The Holly High Schoolboys basketball program willace a rebuilding year heading

into the 2011-2012 season. The Wildcats graduated

our senior starters from ateam that compiled a 12-9 re-cord last year.

The Wildcats saw their sea-son end with a loss to Walshin the District 3 semifinals.Walsh went on to place thirdin the Class 1A state tourna-

ment last year.Despite the losses to gradu-

ation, Holly head coach Shan-non Rushton said he has play-ers who saw some qualityplaying time and ready to stepin

Were going to have a rela-tively young team this year,he said. We have four seniorsand two juniors. But the soph-omores and freshman that wehave are kids that we coachedin junior high that had a lot ofsuccess.

The lone returning starteror the Wildcats will be his son

    Stetson Rushton, a 6-1 seniorguard.

Stetson is probably goingto be the guy that picks up thedouble team and draws theother teams best defender, said the Holly coach. Thatswhere I hope the youngerguys are ready to step it upand takes us to the next level.

    Joining Rushton in the back-court at guard will be EddieRodriquez, a 5-6 sophomore;

    Tylor Swopes, a 5-10 senior;Jason Barth, a 5-8 sophomore;and Porter Salisbury, a 5-10

    junior.Were looking for Tylor to

really shoot the ball well forus, said Rushton. Jason is afantastic slasher to the basket

and a great shooter from theoutside. Eddie is just a greatshutdown defender with quickhands. He does a great job ofrunning the point for us andextremely unselfish. Werelooking to Porter to also giveus some good minutes at theguard position.

Looking to carry the loadunder the boards will be post

    players Jace Masser, a 6-5 sen-ior and Jeremy Brian, a 6-2

junior. Also seeing playingtime in the paint will be Drew

Thompson, a 6-1 sophomoreJace has really got to step

up for us as a senior, Rushtonsaid. Hes a big wide load inthere and has got to be the en-forcer inside. Weve had somebig guys in the past that have

been good for us. Now, its histurn to show the team thathes ready to take that role on.

The same goes for Jeremy andDrew.

The work ethic has beenoutstanding, said Rushton. So, Im looking for somegood things.

Last year, Springfield and Walsh represented District 3

in the state tournament.Springfield finished secondand Walsh was third. Thoseteams are favored once againin the district race.

Its a tough district andtheres some tough teams andgood players, said Rushton.Youve got to be ready to playevery time you step on thecourt.

    HOLLY WRESTLING

Darnell to lead Wildcats on the matBy John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

Holly High School wrestlingcoach Lyndon Wagner will puta relatively young team on themat this year.

Entering his fourth year atthe helm, Wagner has 11 indi-viduals on the roster includingtwo seniors, one junior, foursophomores, and four fresh-man.

We have four returningstate qualifiers and they looksolid, said Wagner. We lostthree quality seniors but wevegot some other kids that Ihope can fill some spots.

Seniors leading the way forthe Wildcats will be defendingstate champion Robert Darnelland state qualifier Jace Nor-dyke.

After back-to-back secondplace finishes, Darnell finallycaptured an elusive state titleas he won the 130-pound statechampionship. He capped hischampionship season with aglittering 31-2 record.

We have a state championin Robert and hes ready toprove himself again, saidWagner. Hes been in the

state finals for three years andhe knows what it takes. Hes aleader and works hard andkids look up to that.

Nordyke returns as a two-time state qualifier but has yetto win a state medal.

Wagner hopes this is theyear that he brings homesome state hardware.

Hes a senior and wants itmore than ever, said the Hol-ly boss. He might surprisesome people and go from nomedal to the state finals. Hes

beaten so many quality guysbut its a matter of him puttingtogether a good state tourna-ment.

Sy Donaldson is the loneunior on the team and Wag-

ner hopes the time has arrivedor him to make it to the state

    tournament.

All through his career, Syhas been winning matches butthen ends up making one mis-take that has cost him thematch, explained Wagner. He had so many close match-es that could have gone eitherway. I think this year, if hepicks it up and avoids thosemistakes, hell be alright.

Sophomores on the team in-clude Cole Burns, Zxavier

    artinez, Christian Orozco,and Austin Palmer.

Burns and Martinez are theother two returning state qual-ifiers for the Wildcats.

Cole finished fifth in the re-gional last year but the fourthplace kid ended up pulling outof the state tournament be-cause of an injury and Colewas able to sneak in there,

    explained Wagner.

Zxavier turned it on late inthe season and at one tourna-ment he beat like three state-ranked kids, Wagner said. So, I think hell surprise somepeople this year.

New faces on the team will

    be freshmen Jose Rodriquez,

    Ryan Nordyke, Jesus Terra-

    zas, and Haydden Humberg.

Wagner said it will be a wait-

    and-see situation to see how

    his younger wrestlers will per-

form but feels they will be able

    to contribute.

Holly competes in a toughregion with the likes of Bur-lington and Rocky Ford, who

were once 3A schools. They have the numbers

and its tough to compete withthe numbers, said Wagner. But Id rather have qualitykids than the numbers. So, Imexcited about this year.

    McCLAVE BASKETBALL

Lady Cardinals take wing under RandelBy John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

    There will be a coaching

change for the McClave HighSchool girls basketball pro-gram.

Kilee Randel takes over thereins in her first assignmentas a high school head coach. Her husband Shawn Randel isthe McClave boys head bas-ketball coach.

Randel wont be new to theprogram and has served as anassistant coach. She was theassistant last year with her fa-ther Dave Stavely. The pairwill reverse roles this season.

Basketball runs in her veinsand Randel is ready for thechallenge that lies ahead. In

act she was a starter oncClaves first state champi-

    onship team in 2004.

Ive been an assistant for solong and it really doesnt feelthat much different, she said. Its been a nice transition andIm really excited. I played inmy first one-on-one tourna-ment when I was in the firstgrade. I love the game and be-ing around it. I also coach theunior high girls and with my

husband coaching too win-ter time is basketball time.

Randel inherits a team thatsuffered some heavy losses

    due to graduation.

    The Lady Cardinals are

coming off a 20-4 record last

    year and made their fourth

    straight appearance in the

    Class 1A state tournament.

    In the state tournament,

    McClave lost a heartbreaker

    in the first-round to Fleming,

    43-41. The Lady Cardinals,

    however, bounced back with a

40-33 victory over BelleviewChristian and then defeatedPawnee, 40-28, for the consola-tion championship.

    Thirteen girls are out for

this years team including twoseniors, five juniors, one soph-omore, and five freshmen.

I have a great group of girls

    who have been around the

game and excited to play, said Randel.

The lone returning startefrom last year is Melissa Na-

varrette, a 5-2 senior poinguard. Also seeing some varsi-ty playing time was Sara Turn-er, a 5-9 junior.

Looking to step into varsitplaying roles will be Kim Idler,a 5-4 junior guard; TaushaSniff, a 5-10 junior post; andHillary Perales, a 5-10 juniopost.

Melissa is the only playeleft that had a taste of our lasstate championship, ex-plained Randel. The rest oour girls are hungry and wanto experience that success.

With us being so young, thedoor is open for all of them to

have a part. Its a new year andtheres nothing we can doabout the seniors that we lost.

We go on and move forward. The girls have caught on tothat and are working hard inevery practice.

McClave competes in one othe toughest districts in thestate. Like McClave, the resof the teams in the district suf-fered some key losses to grad-uation.

The District 2 race will bebalanced this year with thelikes of Kit Carson and Eadsand much improved teams in

    Granada and Cheyenne Wells.

Cardinals boys team has big shoes to fillBy John Contreras

    The Lamar Ledger

The McClave High Schoolboys basketball team will lookto fill a big void with the grad-uation of one of their key play-ers in senior Gabe Benabides.

Benabides was the heartand soul for the Cardinals forthe past several years. He defi-nitely was the quarterback ofthe team and a play makerwho averaged 30 points agame.

The Cardinals went 17-6 lastyear and saw the season endwith a 68-49 loss to Stratton inthe Eastern Regional.

McClave head coach ShawnRandel said the big questionacing the Cardinals will be

who is going to be the playeror players ready to step up andtake leadership of the team.

Losing Gabe as well as Jim-my (Bencomo) and Wacey(Turner) is going to hurt us,said Randel. They played forme for three years and itsgoing to be tough to replacethat leadership.

With no seniors on the ros-ter, the Cardinals are going to

be young. Were going to be fairly

young this year and seniorTate Mauser went down withan injury in football and we

wont have him, explainedRandel. We will be mostly a

junior, sophomore, and fresh-man dominated team.

Randel said hell have somepretty decent players return-ing in Cody Canfield, a 6-5 jun-ior post player as well as Ash-ur Weidrich, a 6-1 juniorforward; Zach Samora, a 5-10

    junior forward; and Dillon Kel-

    ley, a 5-10 junior guard; andCristian Juarez, a 6-1 sopho-more guard..

Those four guys playedquite a bit last year and theyllsee quite a bit of time this

year, said Randel. Were ex-pecting good things fromCody. Hes grown a littlemore, hes athletic, and he canshoot the basketball. Hes

going to play a big part of oursuccess. This is his time and

    we need some leadership fromsomebody.

Randel added that JoshWarn, another junior, will alsostep in and fill in with somespot time and some freshmanplayers will also see someplaying time.

    This years team will be

    more athletic than last yea

but we wont have the domi-

nant scorer that they had in

    Gabe, said the McClave skip-

    per. Were probably going to

    be more well-rounded than

    weve been since Ive been

here. Weve got some size and

some kids who can shoot the

    basketball. It will be interest-

ing to see how it all plays out.
