Chief Bowles

• Comanche chief during the 1820s

• Signed a peace treaty with Sam Houston that allowed Comanche’s to live in Texas

• Lamar ordered Comanche’s out of Texas in 1839

• Bowles refused and was killed as the Comanche’s were forced to Oklahoma

• Representative for Tejanos in San Antonio

• Supported Lamar and opposed Sam Houston

• Wanted Texas to stay an independent nation

Council House Fight

• March 19, 1840• Comanche's agreed to

surrender Anglo captives• Only one Anglo released• Indians tried to leave

and were attacked by the Texas Rangers

• Several Comanche's were killed

• Comanche nation still refuses to make peace

• Very costly and unsuccessful

for aiding rebels • Became part of the US

Navy after annexation

Santa Fe Expedition

• June 1841• Lamar sent troops to

claim the western boundary of Texas– All land east of the Rio

Grande• Mexico did not agree to

the new boundaries• Texans were captured and

imprisoned • Expedition was a failure

and waste of money

Mier Expedition

• Mexico invaded Texas after the Santa Fe expedition

• 300 Texans were sent to Mier in order to push back Mexican forces

• Over 900 Mexicans fought back and the Texans surrendered

• Santa Anna ordered every Texan that drew a black bean be executed– 176 Texans were executed

• Texas 4th president 1844– Sam Houston was reelected for

3rd

• Supported Sam Houston’s policies– Annexing into the US

• Convinced the US congress to annex Texas if they paid off Texas’ debt

• Texas was annexed into the US in 1845 as a slave state– Texas gave 1/3 of land to US for

debt payment
