2017 Hurricane Season Gulf of Mexico

Active Systems

Harvey Tropical Storm Harvey has made landfall on the southwest Louisiana coast this morning near Cameron. Harvey has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. Harvey will move inland and weaken across the Lower Mississippi River Valley through Thursday. Harvey will continue to produce heavy rainfall across portions of eastern Texas and Louisiana today into early Thursday. Locally heavy rain is possible for southeast Louisiana, western and southern Mississippi, and coastal Alabama today into Thursday. Please see our latest advisory for more information on Harvey.

Other Disturbances / Areas to Watch Disturbance 36 is located 250 miles to the west of the Cape Verde Islands near 16N, 28W. It is moving to the west-northwest at about 18 mph. This is expected to continue over the next few days, before turning more westward over the central Atlantic. The disturbance is showing signs of organization and could become a tropical depression with any additional organization. Latest model guidance suggests that it may become a threat to the northern Leeward Islands in about a week. However, it is too early to determine the exact track and intensity. The chance of development over the next 7 days is 95 percent.

Some of the computer models are indicating that a weak area of low pressure may form next week in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. It must be stressed that there are no indications that this will be anything more than a weak, disorganized area of low pressure. It could produce locally heavy rainfall over portions of northeastern Mexico later next week.

Disturbance 34 is located across the central Caribbean along 76W. It is moving to the west near 20 mph, and this is expected to continue over the next few days. The disturbance is producing a few showers and thunderstorms across Haiti and northern Colombia. The environment is not favorable for development. No development is expected over the next 7 days.

Disturbance 31 has become an extratropical low pressure system over the western North Atlantic and has been removed from our analysis.
