    Vision

To work for economical, political and socially marginalized communities for their holistic advancement and implementing specific, customized, cost effective, scalable and replicable models for community development.

    Mission

To help and empower the less advantaged children and women by putting at least 500 street children, dropouts to formal schooling system by 2020 and to increase the income by Rs 5000 of at least 200 under our women empowerment program.

    15. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Lakshyam is an NGO devoted to the destitute and suppressed communities,

especially women and children. Established in 2012, Lakshyam is an NGO

that uplifts children and women of at-risk communities through education &

    employment.

We at Lakshyam vowed to put an end to this widespread violation of

people’s fundamental rights, especially of women and children residing in

  • the slums of metropolitan cities. We aim to empower them through

education and employment by implementing models of development that

are tailored to the needs of the community. Lakshyam has organised

programmes such as – Butterfly- Child Welfare and Education (wherein basic

education is provided to impoverished children through comprehensive

learning methods), Lakshyam Toy Library (wherein the child’s growth is

supplemented using educational toys, games and books in an environment

which cultivates and encourages the child’s imagination and creativity), Rooh

    – Awakening Women’s soul (wherein women are empowered to generate

self-employment and a means of income using training of vocational and

    professional skills).

We have been supported by many Bollywood celebrities like Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher and various corporate Companies like Black Rock, Samsung, Reckitt Benckiser, Safexpress, CAF, Ramjeth Malani etc... Our work has also been appreciated by noted personalities like Former President Sri. Pranab Mukherjee, Honerable Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi, Ms. Sheila Dixit, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Ms. Sharmila Tagore and others.

    16. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

India has 440 million children Over 12 million child workers in India are on paper.(Possibly 60 million

    in reality)

3 million children are living on the street

Over 50% of children face some kind of sexual abuse and are beaten in school in India

50% of children are not going to school or are dropouts.

  • Less than 60% of children cannot read a short story or do simple arithmetic even after 5th class

    17. NEED OF THE PROJECT:

Remedial & Bridge Education Center: In India, an estimated 40 million children (4 to 14 years) are out of school and almost two thirds of these are girls. Statistics shows that even after 5 years of schooling, only 40% of children attain basic levels of learning, an alarming 58% of girls drop out before completing primary school. There are innumerable rural/semi urban areas surrounding are living without shelter, basic education, water and sanitation facilities, amenities for existence and reasonable means of livelihood. In the context of marginalized and vulnerable urban poor, a large population lives in Delhi without these basic urban services. Most of the children are first generation learners and thus face societal and familial pressure to discontinue their education at an early age. Lakshyam believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. In its working in other at-risk communities in and around regions with less and/or almost no basic facilities available, the NGO observed that gender disparity in education is the most crucial factor that needs to be addressed. We believe that the best way to help improve the situation of children is by starting education at a young age. The attention and efforts of Lakshyam will be focused on increasing the school enrollment at primary level and reducing school drop-out rates, particularly for girls.

    • Project Goal:

Long term Goal: To provide an environment for a better education, to ensure that every street child and dropout is prepared for mainstream schooling and to bridge the level of education so that all the kids are enrolled in govt school/NIOS.

  • Short term Goal: • To provide bridge education at Lakshyam centre and provide educational support to school going class up to 5th level (Initially) student to reducing drop-out and promote them for higher education.

    • Setting up Remedial Education Centre for school children age group (4- 14 yrs) to help them achieve minimum level of learning (MLL) so that they

can be further enrolled in formal schools.

    18. OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

Lakshyam has set up the Remedial & Bridge education center in the area with the following objectives:

    1. To enable quality pre schooling education at community level, which foster physical, mental and social well-being.

    2. To encourage parents to send their children to school. 3. To get Children out of begging, Rag picking and get them admitted into

mainstream schooling via bridge education centre.

    4. To regenerate the lost interest of these children in studies.

    5. To integrate the drop out children into mainstream schooling. 6. To provide supportive education through remedial classes. 7. To help each child attain his/her full educational potential. 8. To provide better quality of education and eradicate the gender

imbalances. 9. To create skill based education with functional literacy.

    19. GEOGRAPHICAL AREA

    1) Project one-Sindhi Basti , Vasant Kunj , Delhi

  • Link to video of the area: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xccPbQMEOsc

    2) Project two- Arthala, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh Link to video of the area: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKOi0KEmA9w

The client group particular slum is an urban settlement in Vasant Kunj and Ghaziabad. The entire area comprises of approximately 150-200 households, with a population of approximately 3000, predominantly the migrant population. The average income is Rs. 3000-4000 per month. Most young working mothers have to leave their children unattended, as there is no provision of ICDS or Balwadi services in the area. Due to poor sanitation facilities and unhygienic conditions, women and children are the most vulnerable. The majority of the population is educationally backward and challenged, due to which there is a high prevalence of orthodoxy, gender bias, alcoholism, domestic violence and lack of sensitivity and awareness about the importance of education. Hence, there is a need to work with them and introduce a new thought process and bring a positive shift in their mindset and develop a healthy and conducive environment for the learning and growth of both boys and girls. The major chunk of population works as beggars, construction workers, ear cleaner, hawkers in traffic signals etc. Due to a high cost of living and low per capita income, female population also has to work in traffic signals where they sell Chinese stuff. This is how they manage earning daily meal for their family. They generally work hard for 10-12 hours a day. As working parents fail to look after their children at day time, it is often found that their children wander around the community, and often accompany them to their work place and end up as beggars. Even those who are enrolled in Schools are not able to perform to their potential due to appalling health of the Government schools and ignorance of parents. As a result, they are deprived of education and healthy childhood. The condition becomes worse as they become vulnerable to different kinds of abuses and exploitation, especially the girl child. Struggle for survival, low literacy rate and lack of awareness about the benefits of education

  • prevents many parents from enrolling the children in school and allowing them to complete at least their basic education.

The infrastructure of Government schools is woefully inadequate. Reasons like lack of proper documents for admission, girl child engaged in work and sibling care, compound the problem. Mid-session migration, relocation and lack of academic guidance results in repetitive failures and increase the number of school drop outs. Even at primary level, the ratio of school dropouts’ is high. Followed there is a huge number of children who have never attended the school. Therefore, in order to cater to the diverse educational and economical needs of the target areas, Lakshyam proposed to initiate a multifaceted project approach under which the following interrelated program is initiated.

    20. DURATION OF THE PROJECT:

As per the need/ 1 Year

The program will be continued next year after due appraisal by the Implementing and sponsoring Agency.

    21. BENEFICIARIES OF THE PROJECT

Children (between the age of 4 to 14 years)

    Dropouts

    Beggars/ Rag pickers

    Street children

    22. SERVICES THAT WILL BE DELIVERED

  • Based on the comprehensive needs assessment survey conducted by Lakshyam earlier and the periodic community meetings, Lakshyam has identified the needs of community people and the targeted beneficiaries. The activities have been planned so as to cater to specific needs of marginalized children and would follow multi-pronged strategies which can be categorized as:

Remedial and Bridge Education Program: Children do not just grow in size. They develop, evolve, and mature, mastering ever more complex understandings of the people, objects and challenges in their environment. There is a general pattern or sequence for development that is true of most children. However, the rate, character, and quality of development vary from child to child. Culture influences development in different ways, and the goals for children differ from culture to culture.

The first step will be to mobilize the dropouts, beggars, rag pickers and street children to come to the center and provide children the right counseling of why education is important and that every child must go to school, after which specific education programs will be designed which will be competency based to bridge the gap of education with the children. The main aim of the bridge education will be to give the child the foundation for better understanding of School Curriculum and also to provide information and knowledge that is relevant to the children’s social situation. The ultimate objective will be to prepare the children to enter and complete the mainstream education as well as to prevent the child from exploitation and child labor and wandering around the streets aimlessly. A proper step will be followed for making and collection of documents required for the enrollment in schools. Admissions will be done in the school and the concept of ‘joyful learning’ and ‘play-way method of learning’ is promoted and implemented by Lakshyam which goes a long way in attracting the children to do the schooling. Lakshyam has designed its model keeping in mind that children can come to Lakshyam center learn the basics of school curriculum and then can be enrolled in the schools. Also, to make sure to reduce the various kind of sexual and physical harassment cases that usually children faces when

  • parents are not around or out for work especially in the area we are working in. Our last step will be to provide remedial education where the children would be taught in afternoon session after they come back from School to help them cope with their new school curriculum, and to be with them till they have successfully completed their education of 5th standard.

  • 23. GENERAL IMPLIMENTATION STRATEGY:

The project is designed after a thorough assessment of the needs of the children. Each component is specifically designed based on addressing the immediate needs of the children. Lakshyam is ensuring that the staff/personnel recruited are experienced, sensitive to the needs of the marginalized. They are given induction and imparted adequate in-service and periodical refresher trainings to update them with the recent and innovative practices to deal with the needs and ensure effective service delivery to the beneficiaries.

The monitoring mechanism ensured through assessment of the ongoing work on monthly basis which focused on appraisal and review of activities planned, feedback mechanisms is developed and activities are modified based on the dynamics of the working areas as and when required. The monitoring is done, keeping the key indicators as a basis for assessment and the process indicators are utilized to measure the efficacy of ongoing programs and future plans. The impact of the project on the beneficiaries is reviewed on a half-yearly basis and systematically documented. This method of documentation is done with the help of an ongoing feedback mechanism from the beneficiaries and the staff; it helps in making the required changes in the plan of activities. The following feedback will be done with the help of a simple technology- based solution, Track Your Metrics which is a self-reporting tool that enables NGOs and funders to build metrics, monitor projects and measure the impact of their work. It is an innovative, unique, all-in-one platform and application. It allows for survey formulation (Need assessment, baseline survey, midline survey, endline survey), data collection, data monitoring, and most importantly, provides access to a master question bank which can be customised to suit the organization’s/projects needs. It will enable stakeholders to assess their work, widen impact, create accountability, and thus, enable scaling up of operations.

The impact is measured based on the objectives of the different activities, the monthly and quarterly plans. Every year a thorough program review and financial evaluation is undertaken which provides critical feedback on the

  • ongoing activities, financial control, organizational efficacy, on the strength and morale and above all the perception of the constitute groups.

    24. MONITORING & EVALUATION:

The project monitoring will undertake to track both project activities and progress made towards the achievements of the project goals and objectives. The Program Manager strictly monitors and reviews documentation of progress, effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery. Apart from that following activities are undertaken to ensure the smooth functioning of each and every program under the project.

    1. Daily monitoring and quarterly review will be conducted in education

component based on set indictors of quality education. Regular follow up of enrolled and mainstreamed children through School Visits, weekly feedback and monthly meeting with the teachers.

    2. Maintenance and updating of individual student profile specifying their

socio-economic background, past education status of both the children and parents. Monthly and quarterly assessment and maintenance of academic progress record of each and every learner. Daily diary, lesson plans and monthly reports maintained by the teachers. Regular monthly meeting with the parents to seek their views and suggestions about the program activities.

    3. Quarterly review of all the programs in terms of goals and objectives of

    the project.

    4. Performance appraisal of all the project staff on the basis of their knowledge. Skills and abilities as well as achievements and learning.

    Documentation and Evaluation:

  • Self-Assessment of each beneficiary will be done monthly by Oral Test and/or Written Tests.

Quarterly assessment of each beneficiary by taking written exam of each subject. If a student seems weak in study during test, special classes would be taken by the teacher for respected subject in which he/she is weak.

After each test the performance of each child will be present in front of their parents. In each Parents Teachers Meeting the performance and growth of each child will be presented to their parents. Individual student profile would be maintained by LAKSHYAM Staff.

    3. Will build Special focus on improvement in academic and non-academic grades of the children in schools.

    1. Will increase awareness of the community about the importance of education.

    2. Parents will be encouraged to send their children to school.

    3. This will create better opportunities for children in choosing their career

    4. Will lead to a dignified life of the children as well as of his/her family.

    26. EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE OF ORGANISATION

Lakshyam launched the Child welfare program named “Butterfly- Child Welfare and Education” that symbolizes freedom with the wings of a butterfly. The concept of ‘Butterfly’ is based upon imparting the two most crucial aspects of welfare, a holistic education and well-round development. This endeavor

functions with a motive of completely demolishing the term “underprivileged”.

J.J. Basti, Vasant Kunj, was our first centre which we have closed after being there for 5 years as we believed that community was aware enough to send their next generation of children to school , their collaborative health camps were tied up , women were employed and empowered and 90% of the children were going to the nearest govt. school.

    Program

    Effectiveness

  • In accordance with the aim, Lakshyam has empowered innumerable children around the country. More than the number, Lakshyam has striven to improve the quality of lives of children and has been sublime so far.

There are 2 current centers: E2,Vasant kunj Arthala, Ghaziabad

E2,Vasant kunj The E2, Vasant Kunj center, majorly the entire community works in traffic signal either begging or selling toys as a source of their livelihood. The community condition is really bad. Around 200 families are staying in tents over 20 years with no access to basic water. They have to buy water to drink or wash so eventually they don’t take bath for 10 days or wash their hands after going to toilets or wash

Sakshi was one of the girls who was seen begging on the traffic signals of Chhatarpur on Saturdays outside the mandir asking for money or food. When Lakshyam started working in the Basti she never came to us, she just eyed us from distance and ran away. Our first step started when we encouraged people to recognize her name and call her Sakshi instead of Gungi. Slowly she started coming to us and there we realized how beautiful she is, how deep are her eyes and over last one and half year the whole community has accepted her because we had made her feel special and this made people curious why was she getting so much importance.

utensils. Lakshyam’s efforts to rehabilitate the children have borne fruits, as 19 of our children have been successfully enrolled in the government school while 2 in the private schools – their fees are being sponsored by Lakshyam. We continue to support the children along their journey by providing remedial education and resolve any difficulties that they might be facing in their school lives.

  • Ghaziabad Lakshyam center in Ghaziabad has helped Lakshyam extend help in far more grievous and needy societies in the country. The children of a rag picker’s community were destined to follow the same path as their parents. In an attempt to change their fate, Lakshyam has set up a free of cost remedial school that helps children at least get introduced to education for now. With time and incessant efforts, we are able to send 6 children from Lakshyam center are enrolled to a private school as we want to see the children at the same heights as any well-to- do child in our society.

Deepak was a ragpicker , when we use to open our centre early morning 9 am , he would be on his way back from rag picking from the roads as his working hours was early morning. With those dark brown eyes he use to stop at our gate and look inside the kids coming in and settling down. It took us 2 months to bring him inside the school. Initially when he started coming to school he would bring his bag full of rags keep at the entrance and then walk in. Due to lack of proper waste management in our country , his hands use to bleed almost thrice a week as 80% of us thrown glass bottles, plastic bottle, paper , card board and along in the same bin anything which is broken. These are further dumped on the road sides. The kids so called “Ragpickers” then pick out stuff from this garbage that they can sell further and earn their living. Deepak being one of them.

The eyes had that passion to study, his family pressure made him pick the rags but for 1 year he/ we managed both together. After a year he was completely with us as he was a bright hard working child and his family was counselled regularly. Another 1 year his growth was tremendous and within 2 years he was in a state where we though he can be enrolled in a proper school. Today he is going to a private school and in Class 3 and we hope he becomes a police officer that’s what his dream his!!
