Dear Lakewood Community, I want to draw your attention to an important upcoming event at Lakewood. On Thursday, January 19, we will hold our annual Kindergarten Showcase event. This is a time prospective families can meet with elementary staff and find out about our top-notch programs here in West Ottawa! It is specifically designed for parents who have children who will be in kindergarten in the fall of 2017 but any families interested in learning more about Lakewood or West Ottawa are welcome to attend. Future kindergarten students are encouraged to attend as well. They will have an opportunity to do some activities with our kindergarten teachers. Wondering if your son or daughter is old enough for kindergarten? For the 2017-2018 school year, students need to be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2017. However, you may ask us about kindergarten options if your son or daughter has a birthday that falls between September 1 and December 1. Please help us spread the word to your neighbors and friends! Winter is HERE! Please send your child to school in a coat, snow pants, hat, mittens, and boots. We want our kiddos to stay as warm and dry as possible.

Labeling your child’s winter gear is also a good idea since many students have the same winter items.

STEAM Museum is coming to

Lakewood on January 19!

What is STEAM Museum, you ask?

STEAM stands for “Science, Technology, Engi-

neering, Art and Math.”

It is a hands-on school assembly program that

brings a science museum to us! Each class will

have a turn during the day to explore science

concepts such as building an arch, programming

a robot and 3D printing.

We will need some volunteers that day. We

will need a couple of people to help set up and

tear down at the beginning and end of the day

and about 6 people to help at stations during the

day.

Please

contact the

office

(786-1300)

if you are

able to

help.

Thank you PTO for sponsoring this event!!!!

Illnesses and Injuries

Occasionally a child becomes ill while at school. If not seriously ill, we will usually have a child rest in the office for a few minutes. We may check his/her temperature and will call you to pick up your child if a fever is indicated. We do ask that your child is fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. The 24 hour policy also applies to diarrhea and vomiting.

Our students love to play hard! We are happy to provide band aids and icepacks for minor injuries. Sometimes the injury is more perceived than actual; a little TLC goes a long way. Occasionally, a more serious injury occurs and we will notify you as soon as we are able. (Updated phone and cell phone numbers are SO important!). We will also notify you if your student receives a pretty good bump on the head, even if the student appears to be ok at the time.

Lost and Found

These glasses have

been in the office

for over a month

and we would love

to find the owners.

Please let us know

if they are your

child’s. Thank You!

Save the Date! 4:00-5:00 PTO General Meetings

January 31 April 25

Meetings are held in the library. Childcare is provided.

Spartan Rewards- SpartanNash will no longer be doing “cash for class”. However, collect your Spartan receipts (including convenience store and gas centers in 10 states), drop them off at school or send them in with your student! When Lakewood reaches $150,000 in receipts, we receive $1000.00. The receipt must be an original, but you CAN blackout name/payment information. This program includes any Spartan-Nash owned stores located in Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio. If you have family or friends throughout the state, ask them to save their receipts!

BoxTops: Send in your boxtops EVERY month! There is a box in each classroom for collection! Every little bit helps and allows for more opportunities/learning resources and supplies back to Lakewood staff and students.

BOX TOP$ for Education Update Thank you so much for your help and continued support of the Lakewood PTO! The first pizza party deadline is approaching. We will reward the classes who collect the most box tops by having pizza parties in January & May. We will have a winner for YK – 2nd & a winner for 3rd – 5th. The deadline was December 16 for the January party; start col-lecting now for the May party!

For-

Greetings Great Lakewood families! Happy New Year to you all. Life is good down in the gym…the holidays were wonderful and it is good to be back. I sure hope you and your family had a wonderful break. We finished up our basketball unit this week, and next week we will shift our focus to tumbling and balance skills. The kids will be excited. Stay warm and keep yourself moving... Mr. de

Total Trek Quest (TTQ) Spring 2017

Look for registration information on the spring season of TTQ to come home the first week in

January. The spring season will start the last week of February and will end with the Tulip

Time 5K on May 6.

Total Trek Quest is a 9 week experiential learning program for boys in 3rd

through 5th grades.

It combines the physical activity of training for a 5K run with a curriculum that focuses on

learning to make goals, building strong social bonds and making healthy choices. The train-

ing for the 5k includes strength and stretching exercises along with a program that gradually

increases time spent running. The curriculum activities focus primarily on building relation-

ships, setting goals, and making healthy choices. Teams meet after school twice a week for

the 9 week season. Teams consist of 5-15 boys with at least 2 adult coaches.

We are also looking for coaches! Coaches can be men or women; we are looking for a posi-

tive attitude and a passion for helping kids reach their full potential. You do not need to be

an experienced runner! Ideally, we want at least 2 coaches per 15 boys on a team. If you

are interested in coaching, contact Vicki Kavanaugh at 616-396-2301

ext 149 for more information.

2nd Grade Update: A couple of assignments we’ve worked on recently are:

Creating a Kahoot Quiz for the topic “Ants.” We used World Book Kids (log in to moodle.westottawa.net and choose World Book Kids from home) to do some research on this topic.

We’ve also been exchanging word processing files with partners and giving suggestions and comments to each other in Google Docs. Our topic is “The Power of Yet” so that we can focus on what we can do and to keep trying and not give up on what we can’t do yet.

Internet Safety Tips for upper elementary:

Create a list of cell phone and online rules with input from your kids.

Talk about the importance of safe and ethical social networking that includes:

Only adding people you know as friends

Treating people online with kindness and respect

Not using a real photo as your main profile picture

Using a nickname or first name

Not adding apps without permission

Not uploading photos of people without asking first

Not sharing passwords with friends

(For ideas on rules for social networking, see the tip sheet Social Media Rules)

Teach your kids to always ask you first before sharing personal information online.

Talk to your kids about their online friends and activities just as you would about their other activities.

Encourage your kids to come to you if they encounter anything online that makes them feel uncomfortable or threatened. (Stay calm)

SPANISH SPOTLIGHT

Kindergarten students are doing a fun unit on food vocabulary. We are learning words such as pan

(bread), leche (milk), and papa (potato). Here is a song that you can practice at home with your child!

Music Notes from Mr. Loughrin

Have you checked out Incredibox????? “Incredibox is a musical app in which you can quickly and easily create a mix by running a band of beatboxers”. It is one of the coolest and most fun music websites I have ever seen! Kids and adults can go online to www.incredibox.com and create and arrange their own beat boxing, hip hopping, jazz jumping arrangements using the Incredibox Beat Boxing “dudes”. Each “dude” has their own riff or ostinato pattern. You pull them up and assign them a part and they play it. It is a ton of fun and quite addicting!! Check it out!!!!
