Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

November is…..football, swirling leaves and chilly days. At school in November, teachers are busy preparing to meet families to share first quarter progress of students. We all look forward to welcoming you to school on November 12th, 13th or 14th as we strive toward our goal of a face-to-face meeting with each and every Lincoln family.

As I walk through classrooms each day, I see teachers providing students with well-planned lessons, pushing them to the edge of their comfort levels-where the deepest learning starts. I hear teachers asking children to explain, prove, defend, analyze and create. Often, what I don’t hear are teachers giving students answers….this sounds strange, I know. However, by continuing to refine questioning skills and asking students to collaborate on problems, the best route a student has to an answer is not always the most direct route. Working and thinking hard to figure out answers gives children the pride that comes from figuring something out on their own, as well as learning that is long-lived, instead of fleeting.

The teachers and I look forward to being your partners in the education of your children. November is…a time for thanksgiving. We are thankful for the support you give school programs, teachers and especially your children each day.

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

Things are moving quickly on our final phase construction project. Two of the three meetings in the latest round of elementary architect meetings have been held and revised design plans unveiled. The third and final meeting of these will be held Thursday, Nov. 6 at 6:30 pm in the Emerson Elementary Cafetorium. The revised plans for Lincoln will be presented at that time.

The community also got its first look at preliminary design plans for the high school at a meeting on Oct. 7. These and the new elementary plans can be found on our School Construction page on our district website at www.lakewoodcityschools.org. The Construction page link is on the left-hand side of the page under Quick Links.

Finally, the abatement process has begun at all three elementary schools. Once this process is finished, which will vary in length depending on the school, demolition will begin. The earliest schools will begin to be demolished is January. At the high school, the construction team is working on preparing transition spaces for the students to eat in once the cafeteria is closed off. Once those spaces are complete, the abatement process can begin on the east end of the school.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and cooperation during this time of transition.

Many thanks to our 2014-2015 safety patrol members for helping us with door and parking lot duty. These students come to school early and/or stay at school late in order to fulfill this obligation.

TRAFFIC AND SAFETY CHANGES

Page 6: Lakewood High School€¦  · Web viewYour child can have his/her school pictures retaken on November 11. Just send your original photos back in the envelope they arrived in and

Thanks to the continued efforts of PTA and cooperation of the Lakewood Police Department, beginning October 27 a city crossing guard will be posted at Chase Ave.

IN ADDITION, sometime in the near future, signs will be posted indicating that no traffic will be permitted to turn onto Chase from Clifton between 7:30 am and 4:00 pm. Further, all northbound traffic on Chase Ave. will be required to turn right onto Clifton.

While these traffic changes may be inconvenient for drivers, especially the residents of Chase Ave., keeping your children safe is our number one priority. The crossing guard and traffic update will result in a safer, more positive experience for your children travelling to and from school each day.

Model Building Club News

The model club has had 2 meetings with the next scheduled for the first week in November. There are 10 members who are in fourth or fifth grade. All monetary support is through the Lakewood Education

Foundation and we thank the group for this support. For now, the students are working in pairs to build snap together models. Mr. McGuan, Mr. Browngardt and the students are finding that model building is living up to some of the goals and values stated in the grant: patience, achievement and double-checking work. This is also a great way to spend some after-school time with friends!

While cleaning out the attic at my mom’s house, I found this flyer in my elementary “school box”. Some things stay the same---the message is still a good one!

Flu season is upon us and here are a few healthy tips to follow:

Avoid close contact with people who are ill. The flu spreads from person to person.

Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Respiratory droplets contain the flu virus.

Stay home from school when you are ill. Children can infect others beginning one day before getting symptoms and up to seven days after getting sick.

Wash your hands often. Use warm, soapy water and dry with clean towels.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread when you touch something that has germs on it and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

Drink plenty of water. A well-hydrated body has a better chance of fighting infections.

Keep your immune system strong. Eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, and be sure to get regular exercise and plenty of sleep.

Speak to your Doctor about getting the flu shot

From the School Nurse:

The Lakewood School Nurses do vision screenings for all students new to the Lakewood Schools and all students in Preschool, Kindergarten, and grades 1,3,5,7, and 9. If any vision problem is suspected, the parent/guardian is notified by mail.

If you have received a notice that your child should have a complete eye exam, please be sure to schedule an appointment with an eye doctor as soon as possible. It is very important for your child’s well-being and education.

The School Nurses are involved with the Sight for Students program which may provide free eye exams and glasses to children in qualifying families. Families whose income is less than 200% of the poverty level may qualify. If you qualify, you will be given a list of eye doctors who participate.

We are happy to help with this program. Please call your schools’ Health Center.
