What’s more fun than summer in Minnesota? Having livedhere most of my life, I can honestly say, I can’t think ofanything. It’s a time to head outside as the sun warmsyour face, the lakes call your name and the fireflies dance

for your pleasure. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, and here at theVacationer, we want to share all this with you.

July and August are the pinnacle months of thesummer season, and this issue will get you intouch with what’s in store. The lakes area is filledwith celebrations as nearly every small communityhas special days set aside to celebrate its history.

The lakes here are spectacular! Boating, fishingand waterskiing opportunities are everywhere, butmy favorite is a quiet pontoon ride and a longevening on the dock watching the sun go down. Itrelaxes my mind and settles my soul.

If you love to golf – this is the place! We have nine golf courses

waiting for you to tee off. But if you’drather watch, we will be celebratingthe 91st annual Resorters Golf Tourna-ment at the Alexandria Golf Club July29 through August 4. You may even beable to catch a glimpse of professionalgolfer Tom Lehman, a native of Alexan-dria, who is often on the sidelines of thetournament.

You’ll find talented artists from aroundthe state displaying their works at Art inthe Park this July. I never fail to find something wonderful to bringhome when browsing through the booths.

I know as you look through the Vacationer, you’ll find something thatsparks your interest here in the Alexandria area. Every day is filled withpossibilites.

We’re happy you’re here!

welcome

Interested in local history? Visit the Douglas County Historical So-ciety and take a guided tour of the famous Knute Nelson house, home of one of Alexandria’s most famous residents. Nelson, who served the people of Minnesota in public office for morethan 50 years, was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, and

served two terms in the U.S. Congress before becoming the state’sfirst foreign-born governor. He then served in the U.S. Senate for 28years.

Nelson claimed a homestead in Alexandria in 1871 andbuilt a small house on the property in 1874. As his politi-cal career progressed, he made additions to the house, adding a formal living room and large bedroom in 1900and a dining room and kitchen on the main floor andfour more bedrooms on the second story in 1915.

Nelson died in 1923. His will stated that followingthe death of his daughter, Ida, the house was to be

given to the Norwegian Lutheran Church as a “home for the aged.” Itserved in that capacity for 38 years.

In 1978, the house was listed on the National Register of HistoricPlaces. On October 1, 1987, the “Knute Nelson House” became theheadquarters of the Douglas County Historical Society.

Perhaps one of the mosteye-catching “landmarks”in Alexandria is Big Ole –a 28-foot tall Viking statuethat stands at the north

end of Broadway.Born in 1965, the Viking has be-

come a much-respectedresident in the lakesarea.

The idea for thestatue began in Janu-ary of 1964 whenNorth Star World’sFair Corporation inOsseo began workingon an addition to theMinnesota displayfor the New YorkWorld’s Fair. Thedisplay was to fea-ture the historicalKensington Rune-

stone in an animated scene titled“Minnesota, Birthplace of America.”The new item to coincide with thisdisplay was the 28-foot, four-tonViking statue.

Big Ole was completed by GordenDisplays of Minneapolis in April of1965 and was transported to NewYork just in time for the World’s Fair.

Big Ole arrived at his home inAlexandria in front of the RunestoneMuseum in December of 1965. Now,almost 45 years later, he still standsstrong.

KENSINGTON RUNESTONEIt’s a controversy more than 100

years in the making: Did an immi-grant Swedish farmer find a buriedrock in 1898 that contained an an-cient runic message carved byViking explorers 100 years beforeColumbus landed in America? Or isthe whole thing a hoax, perpetratedby the farmer or some otherprankster?

A large replica of the KensingtonRunestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read theinscription and take a photo by thereplica. The replica is located in asmall park at the east end of 6th Av-enue in Alexandria.

Explore the controversy for your-self at the Runestone Museum, lo-cated at 206 Broadway inAlexandria.

For more information call (320)763-3160, or visit the museum’swebsite at www.runestonemu-seum.org.

The Central Lakes Trail is apaved, biking and walkingtrail that spans DouglasCounty from Osakis throughEvansville and on to Fergus

Falls in Otter Tail County. The 55-mile-long trail, located on

the old Burlington Northern rail linegrade, connects the cities of Os-akis, Nelson,Alexandria,Garfield, Brandon,Evansville andMelby in DouglasCounty.

The trail headand parking area inAlexandria is lo-cated at the northend of Broadway inBig Ole Central Park.Other trail heads areavailable in the citiesof Osakis, Garfield,

Brandon and Evansville. These trailheads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailsideshelter. A bike shelter is also avail-able along the trail about one andone-half miles east of Nelson.

The Central Lakes Trail alsoconnects to the Lake Wobegon trail,

which runs from Os-akis through Sauk Cen-tre to St. Joseph.Together, they makethe longest pavedbike trail in the state. The Central LakesTrail (www.central-lakestrail.com) isused as a snowmo-bile trail in the win-ter, however studsare not allowed.

Share the TrailBE COURTEOUSAll trail users should be respectful of each other, re-gardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level.

RIGHT OF WAYKnow the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state-controlled. In general, cyclistsshould yield to all other users.

SIGNAL WHEN PASSINGBells are great to use when farther back, especiallywhen followed by a greeting, “Good morning, I’ll bepassing on your left side” as you approach. Yelling “Onyer left” while passing at full speed is not courteous orsafe.

PASS ON THE LEFTJust like a roadway, always pass trail users on the leftside and only when it is safe and clear to do so.

USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGSThere are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and can be very dangerous when not paying full atten-tion. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If thereare multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution.

BE PREDICTABLETrails can be great for training, but trails are for every-one. Never sacrifice your own or someone else’s safetyfor convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fasttraining may be best left to the road. Signal your inten-tions and be sensitive to others.

USE LIGHTS AT NIGHTSome trails may be closed after dark. If open, a whiteheadlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Redtaillights are strongly recommended. Dark trails can re-quire brighter lights to see hazards.

DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAILGroup rides are fun, but don’t take up more than yourhalf of the trail. This often means riding single file onthe trails.

CLEAN UP LITTERDon’t leave trash on the trail and pick up items (espe-cially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) tomake the trail a better place for everyone.
