Content Area: Science Grade Level: Grade 7  Summary: This lesson will be used to establish knowledge of ways to remove contaminants from water. Learning Objective: Given the stages of the water filtration cycle, the student will be able to describe the water treatment processes that occur at a treatment plant and arrange the water filtration cycle in the correct order with 100% accuracy. Grade Level Expectation: GLE 0707.7.6 Evaluate how human activities affect the earth’s land, oceans, and atmosphere. Accomplishments: Develop an understanding of the stages of the water filtration cycle.

Water suppliers use a variety of treatment processes to remove contaminants from drinking water. Water may be treated differently in different communities depending on the quality of the water which enters the plant.

• Aeration is the first stage of the cycle and it is the process of increasing the oxygen saturation of the water.

• Coagulation is the second stage of the process which allows dirt and other suspended solid particles to chemically stick together into floc so they can easily be removed from water.

• Sedimentation, the third stage, is the process used to settle out suspended solids in water under the influence of gravity.

THE STAGES OF THE FILTRATION CYCLE

• Filtration, the fourth stage, is commonly the mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids from fluids (liquids or gases) by interposing a medium through which only the fluid can pass.

• Disinfection is the final stage of the cycle and is the process of removing, deactivating and/or killing of pathogenic microorganisms.
