    Robert Baker, TPWD

    Visit a WildlifeManagement Area

Texas is one o the most diverse states in

the union as ar as the number o species,

habitat, and number o endemic species (those

ound only in Texas). This is due not only

to its large size (2nd in size only to Alaska)

and high number o habitat types, but also

    location overlapping many dierent ecoregions

    (Mountains, plains, desert, pineywoods etc..).

This creates great places to visit and spectacular

sites to see. Texas Parks and Wildlie Department

provides many opportunities to view thesespectacular places in the orm o Wildlie

    Management Areas (WMA).

A WMA is an area managed to ensure that

native habitats are around or uture generations

to see and enjoy. A wide range o habitat

management techniques are used to protect,

restore, and maintain these areas. Examples

o these techniques include, prescribed re,

herbicide, grazing, and reseeding o native

plants. These practices are applied to the

landscape using a scientic approach based ondata collected through surveys and experiments

by TPWD personnel with possible help and

    collaboration rom universities, other agencies,

    and volunteers.

WMAs provide an excellent classroom to

    teach landowners, sportsman, conservationists,

and anyone else interested in the area. Part o

making sure that critical habitats are around or

uture generations is passing on the importance

o these areas, and how to maintain them.

Examples o educational activities include eld

days, workshops, seminars, tours, research, and

    publications.

These WMAs oer a wealth o recreational

opportunities. They can include (some WMAs

allow dierent things and at dierent times)

    consumptive activities (take a resource o o

the area) such as hunting and shing, but

visitors are not limited to just these activities.

People enjoy bird watching, geocaching, boating,

    orienteering, adventure racing, and many

others that are nonconsumptive uses (donttake resources o o the area). Many o these

activities can be done year round.

To access the WMA a permit is required.

Consumptive users need the Annual Public

    Hunting Permit ($48), and nonconsumptive

users need the Limited Use Permit ($12). The

exception to this rule is nonconsumptive users

on National Forest Land and some U.S. Army

Corp o Engineers Land. The money collected

rom permits goes to und management activities

on the property.WMAs can be ound in almost every habitat

type (only lacking 1) in Texas. The 51 WMAs

    encompass 756,464 acres. The locations

and directions to each individual site can

be ound on the TPWD website HYPERLINK

    http://www.tpwd.state.tx.uswww.tpwd.state.tx.us

or by contacting your local TPWD oce. Many

sites will be within a short drive rom your

    location.

    Edward Abbey (American writer 1927-1989,

who wrote primarily about the Southwest)

summed it up very well by saying One nal

paragraph o advice: Do not burn yoursel out.

Be as I am-a reluctant enthusiast a part time

crusader, a hal-hearted anatic. Save the other

hal o yourselves and your lives or pleasure

and adventure. It is not enough to ght or the

land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While

you can. While it is still there. So get out there

and mess around with your riends, ramble out

yonder and explore the orests, encounter grizz,

climb mountains. Run the rivers, breathe deep

o that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly or a

while and contemplate the precious stillness,

that lovely, mysterious and awesome space. Enjoy

yourselves, keep your brain in your head and

your head rmly attached to your body, the body

active and alive. So go visit a WMA and enjoy

yoursel because lie is more un outdoors.

Big Sam has been getting lots o rainand the lake has been on the rise. Thecreeks have been a little muddy in the backand the river has been coloring the wateras it comes down.

There is a lot o new vegetation or theBass to use in the back o the pockets andthat means we will have some good grasslines to sh this year. There will be a lot osh

moving around in the shallows at thistime o year. They are looking or theperect spot to make a nest then try andlure a big emale in to spawn. Lots o thebig emales will start to stage just outsideon the points and ledges waiting to movein when the time is right. They will start

to stack up waiting to spawn. This is themonth to be on the lake hunting Big Bass, checking out new areas looking or males

working on nests.Sam Rayburn is known or the lipless

crankbait bite and Rayburn Red is theprime color. Dont get stuck on just one

shade o red. Sometimes a small dierencein color can be the ticket and there are lotso new baits and colors each year. StrikePro Lures has the Flap Jacks that comein lots o dierent colors, these baits beencatching some nice sh in January orus. Another good bait used to cover a loto water, is the Stanley spinner bait. Theycan be a lot o un when a bass reallysmashes it! You cant beat this time o yearor getting out and enjoying the water. It isso peaceul. Get a jump on the game andgure out where the sh are starting tostack up or the spawn.

Remember the Sharelunker Programentries started October 1st and runthru April 30th. I you havent heard, it

encourages anglers who catch a 13 - pound-plus largemouth bass to lend or donate itto the TPWD or spawning purposes. Thereare some great benets doing this andone o them is that the angler receives aberglass replica o the bass. There is a 24-hour pager at 1-888-784-0600. Check out

the Program rules at their site along withthe Benets. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tc/sharelunker/

The Crappie should start moving backdown the river and along the grass lineslooking or spawning spots. Just a coupleo days o warm weather can trigger themto move up and get active in the pockets.

We had a lot o days last year that we hadun with kids. We were catching 50 or 60crappie in the morning then going backin the evening and doing the same thing.

Youve got to hit it hard when its right andmake the most o it.

The white bass should be biting up riverand sometimes you can ll a cooler in justa short time. When the bite is on there is

nothing more un than heading up therethen nding that you just got into some othe best action o your li e. Weve seen somespots so loaded with sh that every cast wasa catch. Put these sh on an ultra light rodand youve got a ght on your hands.

It looks like we are o to a great startthis February, the lakes area caught a lot

o rain during the middle o January andas o this writing, the orecast is calling ormore rain on the way. This is great news orboth the bass and the bass shermen.

Why is this such great news or the bass? With the low water we have had or the lastcouple o years, it was hard or the bass tond a good sae place to make a bed andlay their eggs. This year, they will have lotso good places to hide their beds and hidetheir ry rom other bass. With the water onthe rise the sh will be able to get on top o

the grass, get on the inside edge o the grassand as always they will be on outside edgeo the grass. They will have plenty o placesto look or a good spot to bed in over thecourse o the next couple o months. This

will also mean they can move up and eedon the newly fooded ground including thefooded beanie trees, hay grass, and small

willow tress.Key baits? Lipless cranks. These baits

are a great way to start o your morningsthis time o year. With the rising water this

will have some areas o the lake stained incolor to muddy, so its best to pick a color

with a little chartreuse in it. You will wantto stay with primarily red colors, but nd

a bait with both o them in it or the bestresults. Rat-L-Trap and Strike Kings Red

Eye Shad both come in this color combo, and are both great baits. When youreshing in an area in which the water isclear you can go to a chrome, or, gold orbrown craw color. By the end o the month,I always eel like the bass have seen theRayburn red color so much they are readyor something dierent, so dont be araidto experiment with some dierent colors, but always know what your tried and truebasics are.

Spinnerbaits are going to work great

this month also. I like the V&M CycloneClassic in chart/blue or chart/white with agold-silver willow lea combo. I the wateris really clear go to a mouse color withdouble willow blades in silver. Spinnerbaitsare a great bait to use when there is toomuch fooding in the grass to use a liplessbait. In these same areas also remember tokeep a V&M swim jig handy. You can work

your swim jig through some o the foodedtrees and brush or a good bite. Best colorsin February or the swim jig are black-blue

or green-pumpkin colors and match it withyour avorite swim bait or a trailer.

For the deeper sh, the outside edge othe grass is the best place to drag Carolina

rig with a 6 lizard, brush hog or V&MChopStick. The best colors or your sot

plastic are watermelon seed, watermelonred fake, and black blue fake. A ootballjig is another great bait to work on theoutside edge o the grass, like a 1/2 oz.green-pumpkin or black-blue color witha matching jig trailer to go with it. I youpreer to crank, try a Strike King 5XD or6XD in sexy shad or chart sexy shad colors. They work great cranking down the outsideo the grass. These deeper sh are sh that

will wait and move up to spawn over thecourse o the next month. Also the deeper

sh are some times easier to catch atercold ronts come through and water tempsare unstable in more shallow areas.

That being said, always remember tokeep an eye on the weather beore gettingon the lake especially this time o year.

You dont want to be caught on the wrongside o the lake when a cold ront comesthrough! For more ino and to keep up withme throughout the month, you can checkout our posts on Facebook; just search or

Bass are t oug t o as sig t ee ers, ut

Bass are erocious ee ers an wi o ten attac

Bass inhale ood by opening their mouth

streamlined body designed to give that side-to-side twitchingaction, but the tail is thicker and heavier so when you kill the

bait it sinks level and gives a little shimmy.

It will work great by itself weightless for twitching, but alsogive it a try on your Carolina Rig, or behind your
