Dear Parents, Happy April! With the official onset of the Spring season, we are both
anticipating and looking forward to increasingly warmer weather. Please make
sure children come to school dressed in layers since morning recesses continue
to be chilly. As the weather is becoming warmer, ice on rivers and ponds are
melting and will still be very cold. Please take the time to review water safety
rules with your children so they know how to keep safe when around open
water.
The past month continues to remain busy and exciting for our school. April 2nd,
2018 marks the 11th anniversary of the very first World Autism Awareness Day. In
2007 this date was declared by the United Nations General Assembly, in order
to bring the world’s attention to Autism, a spectrum disorder that affects tens of
millions globally. At Lake Simcoe PS, our work towards deepening our
understanding of inclusivity includes recognizing World Autism Day, and
creating our Autism Awareness Week (April 3-6). We thank our Community
Classes and our student leaders for their support in deepening our knowledge
of Autism.
Our school focus on student achievement and well-being continues. As part of
our work to foster a safe, inclusive and mentally healthy learning environment,
we have partnered with our School Community Council to host a Family Well-
ness Night. Please save the date and join us on Tuesday, May 1 and bring your
whole family to participate and engage with us on a variety of wellness
activities: family yoga, mindfulness practice, baking and many more. More
information is provided in this newsletter.
Our staff continue to be engaged in professional learning related to our school
focus on Mathematics. During the month of February and March, many of our
teachers from Kindergarten to grade 8 have participated in collaborative
planning and teaching to deepen our knowledge in current math instruction
and current math initiatives. Our students have benefited from the teachers’
learning during their math classes, and some have taken part in their teachers’
learning sessions. We appreciate parents’ continued support of our profes-
sional learning since it will positively strengthen our students’ number concepts
in reasoning, problem solving, critical thinking and communicating and in-
crease their academic achievement throughout their school career. At home,
we encourage parents to engage your children in thinking and talking about
mathematics, and help in building strong and positive attitudes towards
mathematics. Examples of these can be through solving of everyday math
problems and playing math games at home. For more information on how to
engage your children in mathematics at home, please see this link: http://

Autism Awareness Week
The eleventh annual World Autism Awareness Day is April
2, 2018. At Lake Simcoe PS, in promotion of Autism
awareness and in celebration of diversity we will be
celebrating an Autism Awareness Week starting on April
3rd.
As a community, we will endeavor to promote awareness
through education in our classrooms and Equity focused activities. We will also
hold a week ending “Together for Autism” school dance. Toonies for the
dance will support Autism Ontario in increasing awareness and raising money
for research.
Together we are all partners in our children’s education.

We are also collecting milk bags to weave into mats to donate
for the homeless. We need hundreds of milk bags, so please donate if you
can!

Contribute to Strategic Planning at YRDSB - Upcoming Town Halls
York Region District School Board is revisioning its Multi-Year Plan (MYP) and
Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-being. The Board
of Trustees is responsible for setting the strategic direction of public education
in York Region public schools. The MYP incorporates the direction established
by the Trustees with feedback received from all stakeholders, and will inform
decision making at the Board in the years to come. Town halls will be taking
place across the region and feedback collected from families and community
members will inform the creation of a new MYP. Your voice is important and
your input and feedback will help York Region District School Board support
student achievement and well-being. There will also be other opportunities, in-
cluding a survey available in April, to share your thoughts if you are unable to
attend a town hall.

Class Placement for 2018-2019
Much of the planning for a new school year begins NOW! We will be discussing organizational structures, special education delivery models, teaching assignments and timetabling very soon. One of the most important tasks that usually begin in May is the placement of students into new classes for September. Homeroom teachers in consultation with receiving teachers, appropriate support staff and school administration devote much discussion time to the generation of classes that strive to best meet the needs of all of our students. Class placement is a complex process that takes many hours of thought and discussion. Decisions are made following careful consideration of a number of criteria: balance of student abilities, interests and talents, gender balance, class size (consistent with Board and Ministry guidelines), learning style, learning partners and social factors. While friendship issues can play a role in the comfort level of some students, at particular developmental stages, some friends learn best in separate classes. Often parents have new and/or important information to share about their child which lends assistance to class placement decisions. Recent medical diagnoses, significant negative peer relationships that exist outside the school’s awareness or significant individual/family issues that may impact learning, are items of information which are appreciated prior to the placement process. Parent input that is received in writing by the office prior to May 7, 2018 will be considered (and shared with teachers) during placement meetings. Please avoid naming a teacher since staffing can vary due to enrolment fluctuations, teacher leave of absences, teacher requests for different assignments, teacher transfers and surplus. Input after May 7, 2018 may not be considered due to the complexity of the task. Please be advised that while such input is valued, it cannot drive class placement decisions since school-wide limitations and a variety of other factors will, at times, take precedence. Final decisions regarding student placements remain the responsibility of the principal. Class placement information will be shared on opening day in September. Thank you for partnering with us in this very important task.
