2 x LAKE RIDGE ACADEMY 2018 SUMMER PROGRAMS

A diverse and dynamic program offering full and half day experiences open to all area students! Come join us to explore, experience, create, think and have fun!

Program LengthWe offer six weeks of summer program options from June 11 – July 20, 2018. Camps and classes are offered in one to six week blocks. There will be no classes held on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 in observance of Independence Day.

Daily ScheduleThe day includes half (9:00 am – 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm) and full day (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) sessions, before and after-school care, and a supervised lunch.

RegistrationComplete registration forms will be accepted by mail or in person to the Business Office during regular business hours. PDF registration forms are available for download from www.lakeridgeacademy.org/summerprograms. Registration will be confirmed after June 1.

Tuition and Cancellation/WithdrawalTuition must be paid with registration. Prices vary by class. Please see class descriptions for program fees. Courses with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled no later than June 1, and a full refund of tuition will be made. Those cancelling or withdrawing from a class will be subject to a fee of 10% of the total tuition or $50.00, whichever is greater. No refunds of tuition will be made after June 8. Lake Ridge Academy reserves the right to dismiss a student for inappropriate behavior with no refund for the tuition paid.

Course CreditCourses in Health and U.S. History are offered during the Summer Programs for school credit.

Extended DayBefore and after-school supervision is available for a fee of $7.50 per hour. Extended Day times are from 8:00 am – 9:00 am and from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm. Extended Day is operated by experienced Lake Ridge Academy faculty and staff. You may register for Extended Day as the need arises. Billing is handled through the Business Office.

Health & WellnessDuring the Summer Program, there is NO NURSE on duty. In the event of an emergency, 911 will be contacted.

Lunch/SnacksParents are responsible for providing their child with a lunch (including beverage). Refrigeration is available. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided by Lake Ridge Academy.

Class SizePersonalized attention is an important feature of the Summer Program; therefore, class size is limited and set by the Summer Program Director.

InstructorsMost summer programs are taught by Lake Ridge Academy faculty. All of our instructors are certified teaching professionals or highly experienced in their field of instruction. In many programs, a Lake Ridge Academy Upper School student or graduate will serve as a counselor/assistant.

Field TripsSeveral camps and classes will be taking field trips. Parents will be informed of the trip destination prior to the day of the trip. Field trips are chaperoned by Lake Ridge Academy staff and transportation is provided.

Discovery Camps are multi-disciplinary day camps designed to provide children with an enriching, and rewarding learning experience in an environment of summer fun. Campers will encounter a variety of hands-on learning experiences each week, and they will try new things, visit new places, and meet new people all under the guidance of experienced, caring, Lake Ridge Academy faculty and staff.

Discovery Camps will be open for students entering grade 1 – 4, with admitted Lake Ridge Academy Kindergartners invited to join the fun!

Discovery Camps are led by Mrs. Jennifer Szwagulak, Mrs. Kristy Rodriguez, and other Lake Ridge Academy faculty—all Lake Ridge Academy Summer Program veterans. Teachers are assisted by camp counselors, consisting of both upper school and college students.

Week 1: June 11 – 15: Artist for A Week Calling all budding Picassos, Monets, Jan Bretts, and Tomie DePaolas! Throughout the week, students will participate in many artistic activities including: making puppets, painting, sculpting clay, creating illustrations and more! Students will learn about famous masters of classical art, as well as illustrators of modern children’s literature. This week includes our weekly Water Day, a field trip to the beautiful Oberlin College Art Museum and a fun side trip to SplashZone!

Week 2: June 18 – 22: Curtain Up! Drama Camp (Full Day only) Led by Lake Ridge Academy Drama Teacher, Mrs. Kristy Rodriguez, this week introduces students to the stage. Students will sing, dance, perform in group theater games, and explore theatrical improvisation. This creative, low pressure environment provides campers with an introduction to musical theater. Students will present a showcase of their work on the final day of camp for their family and friends.

Week 3: June 25 – 29: Amazing AnimalsThis week will be all about animals, both wild and domestic. Students will have the opportunity to meet several live animals this week! Investigations on Lake Ridge Academy’s 93-acre campus, which contains nature trails and a scientific study pond, will be part of our daily routine and will include: morning bird walks, pond studies, insect safaris and mammal tracking. Students will research favorite animals and make animal art. This week also includes our weekly Water Day and an exciting field trip to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!

Week 4: July 2 – 6 (no camp on Wednesday, July 4): Time Machine TravelJoin us for a week of travel adventure! We’ll pack our bags and explore the exciting times of ancient Greece and Rome, the perilous ages of the dinosaurs, the days of pirates and Vikings, and rocket to the future. We’ll build a time machine, and also spend a day on a field trip to the Natural History Museum, seeing our research up close!

DISCOVERY CAMPS K*–4th

Week 5: July 9 – 13: Space CampGet ready to blast off with a week of out-of-this-world space exploration! We will study about the space station and build one of our very own as we become astronauts for the week, learning all about astronauts’ training, daily routines, and more! We’ll also learn about the planets, stars and constellations, and read celestial myths and legends. We’ll have fun at our weekly Water Day and a special NASA field trip!!

Week 6: July 16 – 20: Planes, Trains & AutomobilesAll system GO! This is a fast-paced camp for kids on the move! This week we’ll dig deep into all of the exciting aspects of travel—be it on planes, trains and autos or rockets, bikes and boats! We’ll spend the week researching, building, testing, and racing a variety of structures: cars, balloon rockets, airplanes, handcrafted rafts, and more! During our time in Lake Ridge Academy’s computer lab, we will get inspiration from vehicles throughout the centuries as we design our own dream machines. We’ll cool off during our weekly Water Day as we transport ourselves down the waterslide, through sprinklers and across the pools! Later in the week, we’ll get an up close look as we explore multiple trains at a train museum.

FINE ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY CAMPSArt CampStudents will work with ceramics, prints, wire sculptures, painting, and drawing using a multitude of mediums, and materials available in the art room. This camp is an opportunity to fine tune artistic skills and to learn to make aesthetic decisions about personal works of art.

Creating in 3 DimensionsHave you ever had an idea that you wished you could bring to life? Ever drawn a sketch and thought how cool it would be to have your design created in 3 dimensions? Are you interested in the world of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing? Consider joining this class where you will utilize Sketchup to create objects in virtual space and then see them printed on one of Lake Ridge Academy’s 3D printers. Examples have included airfoil test sections, various chess pieces, and even the ancient Greek Temple of Venus.

Continue Creating in 3 DimensionsThis course will follow the initial course, but is also open to those who were unable to take the “Creating” course. The course will introduce SolidWorks and AutoCad, two of the primary CAD software programs used in engineering. Students will create complex shapes in Sketchup and Blender, and will utilize the more advanced features of the printers. Filaments will include standard PLA, semi-flex PLA, and dissolvable filament (for complex shapes). Students will learn more about the printing software and how to troubleshoot printing issues.

Oberlin Choristers World Music FestivalNEW for 2018! Children from all over Northeast Ohio join together for this fun, interactive, and rich learning experience that helps open their world to new cultures and musical styles in a week-long day camp. A typical day includes singing, dancing, and playing instruments. Campers learn about language, customs, peoples, and traditions from the area of study. A special finale concert will punctuate a week of singing, dancing, and learning an interactive and fun environment!

CLASSROOM ANTICS TECH CAMPSClassroom Antics offers STEAM-based camps in a range of topics including robotics, video game design, coding and stop-motion animation. LEGO® Robotics: Jungle Bricks – STEAM Camp This camp lets kids bring movement and life to their LEGO creations by teaching them how to code action and sound into their LEGO builds. Kids apply engineering principles by building animal-themed robots with LEGO WeDo technology, code using basic visual programming, and gain an understanding of environmental science by bringing their LEGO animal creations to life. Kids construct and program LEGO robots to move with motors, react with sensors, and emit sounds. LEGO robots remain at camp; pictures of robots and LEGO creations are sent home after camp.

Video Game Design: Level Up! – STEAM CampKids turn screen time into learning time in Video Game Design: Level Up! tech camp by creating their own 3D video games! Kids will design video games with exciting challenges, innovative game play, and fun characters using Kodu from Microsoft. Kids will play each other’s games, offering compliments, suggestions, and encouragement along the way. Video games created in this camp will be saved on a complimentary USB drive to share with friends and family. All video games are playable on Windows computers.

Kids will learn the best way to frame and shoot video, edit videos, and create customized title screens. Kids will create videos in popular genres, including tutorial videos, gaming videos, unboxing videos, and more! Videos used in this camp will be saved on a complimentary USB drive to take home. LEGO® Robotics: Real World Heroes – STEAM CampKids become leaders of tomorrow by learning how to engineer solutions to some of today’s challenges in LEGO Robotics: Real World Heroes tech camp! Kids build and program LEGO robots to think, move and react to solve various engineering challenges facing the world today. Kids use dedicated laptops and LEGO Mindstorm EV3 programming to accomplish a series of innovative challenges. Minecraft: Rule the World – STEAM CampIf your child loves Minecraft and wants to design and program new ideas into their worlds, then join us for this awesome Minecraft: Rule the World tech camp. Kids will learn how to code with a block-based visual programming language inside MinecraftEDU using if-then and while-do statements, variables, and loops. With these tools, they’ll automate processes inside the game, such as farming and mining. Redstone will be used to create circuits and switches to control objects. Kids customize their tools and weapons to rule the world!

Video Game Design: Arcade Generation – STEAM CampDesign numerous types of video games by applying the key game development skills of character development, environment creation, and innovative gameplay with GameMaker software. Kids are led through the full process of creating a video game, including developing characters, rooms, adding backgrounds, music, sound effects and other techniques. Kids are provided access to a copy of the GameMakers software and a library of graphics and music files to continue to develop the video games they make in camp and create new ones. Video games produced in camp will be saved on a complimentary USB drive to play with friends and family on a Windows computer.

ACTIVE LEARNING SERVICES VIDEO GAME CREATION CAMPSActive Learning Services’ Video Game Creation Camps offer programs that use custom designed curriculum to encourage campers to use their creativity as they learn to program a video game using step-by-step instructions. All Active Learning Services’ Video Game Creation Camps are half-day programs that can be combined to create a full-day experience for $510.00 or matched with a half-day Chess Camp (see page 11) for $485.00. Kodu Video Game Creation – Adventure – Like Mario CartChildren will have the option of learning how to program using a Microsoft Xbox controller! Students will create their own cool custom world and navigate through it. Within this world, they will create tasks that need to be completed in order to progress to the next level. Some of those tasks include escaping a sewer maze, survival mode, outwitting rivals, creating decoys and collecting bonus items—all while having fun! Xbox control is optional and supplied by the student.

Video Game Creation – Arcade Style – Like Pac-Man & AsteroidsThe Arcade course is a program where the game that is created has action for each level all on one screen similar to Centipede, Asteroids, or Pac-Man. The campers create a main character, which can be anything their imagination can think of. Other characters, or enemies, pursue the main character who dodge their attacks. The character will score points for picking up objects and destroying the enemy objects. Options are endless and children create level after level for a full week of fun.

Modding, Networking and Hosting with MinecraftMinecraft is hugely popular because it’s collaborative, open-ended and moddable. Our program preserves those qualities and adds a large dose of fun! The week begins with learning the game, controls, recipes and a bit of hosting and networking. Next, campers are connecting to different worlds hosted on our secure server and experimenting with character skins, mods, and custom maps. By day three, the kids are building a moat or even creating a chessboard—the possibilities are limitless!

Field and Fiber FunSpend a week out in the fields and inside crafting! There will be daily goodies to make and taste! Each day we will be visiting the wooded areas and cleared paths on our campus collecting supplies for our crafts. In addition, we will be reusing old bottles, yarn, felt and thread in new and creative ways. At the end of the week, we will be designing gardens for fairies and trolls. Campers should arrive each day with bug spray, boots, water bottle, sun screen and an extra set of clothes.

Ichthyology and Fishing Do you fish or want to learn how? Ever thought about learning to tie your own flies or building your own fishing pole? Spend wonderful summer days around our school pond, on nearby rivers, and on the lake learning to bait a line, use a spin lure, and to cast a fly fishing rod. Students receive instruction and guided practice as needed. The class will also focus on learning about local fish anatomy, habitat, behavior and food resources. As we will be on and off campus, future ichthyologists should dress for the weather, bring a life vest, snack and their patience.

Hike and Bike WeekSpend the week outdoors hiking and biking the best of our region’s trails and parks. Learn how to use a compass, GPS, maps and the natural world to find your way. We’re on the move this week to Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Metroparks, so grab your daypack, your hiking shoes, and let’s hit the trail!

Engineering ChallengesTake on challenges in engineering by learning to experiment, research, design and build to solve problems, develop new ideas and more in the Kemper Science and Engineering Exploratorium and engineering labs. This exciting class is for students who want to explore their engineering potential.

Ultra|Missions Paddleboard CampNEW for 2018! With an emphasis on instruction and skill development in standup paddleboarding, Dr. Lynne Nagy of Ultra|Missions leads camp activities with support from a highly trained, professional staff. Join Dr. Nagy for a week of instruction and skill development in the sport of paddleboarding. Water and land activities build problem solving skills and enhance fitness in a fun, safe, and collegial environment. Campers will be bused to Huntington Beach daily and will return to Lake Ridge Academy at the end of camp.

Need for Speed: Rockets Build and launch your own model rocket! As part of this program, you will investigate the principles of rocketry. You will observe, record, measure, and calculate information related to concepts such as thrust, acceleration, speed, altitude, trajectory, and variables. Building your own models will teach building skills, and allow you to make adjustments for increased speed or agility. Blast off with us!

Nature PhotographyEnjoy a summer’s week on our beautiful campus, Sandy Ridge, and Indian Hollow capturing the essence of nature through a lens. Proving in-field, hands-on instruction in digital camera use, composition and elements of design along with the fundamentals of digital darkroom, this course is an introduction to the art of nature and photography. Photographers should dress for the summer weather including a hat, bug spray and SPF lotion.

WoodworkingAre you interested in working with your hands as well as your mind? Learn an important skill and proper technique for using hand and power tools as we design and build a variety of useful projects for our campus and your home, including bird houses, bat boxes, and more!

Camp LEAD: The Amazing ChaseNEW for 2018! Lake Ridge Academy is proud to partner with The Effective Leadership Academy to offer an innovative youth leadership program. Camp LEAD: The Amazing Chase utilizes games and outdoor team activities to encourage healthy competition and collaboration, and has a focus on cooperation, teamwork, effective communication strategies, time management, and the art of personal leadership.

Just like the hit television series The Amazing Race, campers are given daily team challenges that will help them learn to negotiate for success and gain valuable team points! Join us for a week of fun! Interactive challenges will stretch campers’ personal limits, educate, empower and equip them to take away the critical soft skill needed to become a leader in today’s world.

The Historian’s Toolbox 2018This class is designed for middle school students who are interested in learning and refining strategies for historical reading and writing. The first half of each session will focus on learning close reading strategies for nonfiction texts using Notice and Note’s 3 Big Questions and 5 Nonfiction signposts. The second half of each session will focus on students developing key skills for investigating historical questions, and analyzing primary and secondary source documents with the purpose of improving their research and writing skills. This course will provide students with the necessary tools to confidently approach historical reading and writing in middle school.

Reading and Writing with PowerThis class is designed for new middle school students, or for current middle school students who would benefit from further instruction in the close reading of fiction texts, as well as sentence and paragraph writing. In the first half of each session, students will read a variety of short stories and will learn and practice Notice and Note’s six fiction signposts. These signposts alert students to significant moments in the text, and give them strategies to explore the texts and find evidence to support their interpretations. In the second half of each session, students will learn and practice concrete writing strategies that they can apply to all subjects and classes.

HealthThis is an Upper School level course for credit, grades 9 – 12, and equals one semester of health. Topics will include building a healthy foundation with nutrition and physical activity, emotional health, and promoting safe and healthy relationships. Students will receive certification in Basic First Aid and CPR. Mr. Edgar will contact all participants to find convenient class meeting times (typically meeting one time per week).

U.S. HistoryThis summer program course is designed to allow a student to fulfill the Lake Ridge Academy Upper School U.S. History graduation requirement while providing flexibility to accommodate other summer activities. The course focuses on various themes in the history of the United States with an emphasis on 20th Century.

ACADEMIC CAMPS

The class will meet every day during the first week (June 11 – 15), followed by a more flexible schedule that includes the use of online resources (lectures and readings) that will allow the student to do most of the work off-campus. Requirements include a take home midterm exam due July 6 and a final exam that must be completed on July 20. Additional writing and/or homework assignments will also be required.

After the first week of class, students will be required to meet periodically on campus for discussion with the teacher and other classmates. The instructor will work with each student to create a schedule which will meet each student’s individual needs.

Because of the unique structure of this course, the student will receive a pass/fail grade. Passing the course with a C- or higher will fulfill a graduation requirement, but will not affect GPA.
