Thank you everyone for turning out at the Commodore’s Ball last month. CC and I had a great time and in my case, probably too much of a good time, if that’s at all possible at our wonderful Club. And for those of you wonder- ing, yes I did have my “snappy cas- ual” attire properly checked out by a wardrobe malfunction adviser. It may not be well known in the best circles of haute couture but a t-shirt [with appropriate slogan] over tuxedo pants tucked into white, rubber shrimp boots set off with bow tie and cummerbund, is considered to be correct dress code for a formal gathering at your neighborly trailer park. Those guys know how to party and so do we! Most appreciative thanks to our ever industrious Social Committee who under the guiding hand of Bridget, prepared a truly delicious buffet din- ner fit not only for a commodore, but a king! Cathy, Gail, Gayle, Georgia, Jenny, Leigh, Stefani and Eva too, you excelled yourselves and Janie, the Mardi Gras decorations were a de- light. Now, on with the serious stuff. The New Building Committee has re- ceived an initial estimate based on our design concept at the lofty level of $1.32 million which although formi- dable, is achievable, especially if we are successful with our application for sets. Well, finally this year’s Board thought it would be really good idea to put together a Fleet Captain Committee with yours truly as “chair”. And verily it was so and without too much protest from the pre-selected volunteers, the following have accepted appointment to this new committee: Billy [Regatta and no. 2 Flying Scots] + Orhan [all other Scots] Joel [Sea Shepherd] + Vaughan [all scat boats] + Suz- ana [all dinghies] In addition, Brent will be acting as a boatkeeper-at-large. The objective is to put some structure into the technical man- agement of our most important assets, the boats, combined with a clear procedure for who/when is allowed to take out a Club’s power boat, or rent a sailboat. As an add-on benefit, we will send a clear message to our un- derwriters that we are at all times acting as the “prudent insured” and we all know how important that is. Lots of good things happening at the Club for March so, read on and see you there! Yours aye, Kelvin an SBA “Disaster Loan”. To bring you up to speed, Janie, Jay, Stacie and I met with an SBA “Field Loss Verifier” in early Feb. and we were encouraged at his assessment of our unique situation. Apparently, the SBA views our Club and similar estab- lishments most favorably, as being the pivot point for the rebuilding of local businesses and residences. Since meeting with the FLV, I have been contacted by an SBA Assessor in Washington DC who will be “making a recommenda- tion to his superiors before the end of the month”. No hint however, as to what those recommendations will be. Thus, we now move on to the next level in the application process. Meantime, while Ian is setting the pace, our dynamic architectural duo, Mike and Lynn are looking at ways to bring the price down a notch by investigating different materials, construction methods and building lay-out. • The Race Committee held a meeting on Sunday, January 29, 2006 with skippers and interested members. A terrific turn-out-- over 20 people showed up . Some of the ideas discussed and adopted to encour-age turnout and a more varied schedule included a variety of races: windward/leeward, long distance, multiple races on one day, fund races and a fun race.

An system of scoring to allow spinnaker/non spinnaker competition was suggested to the committee by Dennis Cheuvront , and it was decided to try it in the Spring Racing season. Captains: Please email your boat specs to Dennis Cheuvront [email protected] have him do the calculation to rate your boat for the new system.

The PYC race schedule was set to coordi-nate with the Gulf Yachting Association’s calendar, and a spring warm-up race will kick things off on Saturday, February 11th. The calendar is on the website www.pontyc.org and the results will also be posted. The Principal Race Officer [PRO] for each race are volunteers from the race committee, sailing crews and skippers, and interested sailors. Each race day will have a team headed by the PRO. Club members, especially those with power boat experience for the Sea Shepard, are encouraged to come aboard to learn and have fun!

Best moment of the meeting was John Cramer’s story of starting a Le Mans Race several years ago:

John stood in the middle of Lake-shore Drive with the starting shot-gun, and let loose a shot. Crews at the starting point at the bar gulped a beer and raced to-ward the anchored boats at the harbors

edge to set sail. At this point, a cop car alerted by the gunshot came rac-ing around the corner, lights flashing, to see John in the middle of the street, shotgun in hand, and a run-ning mob heading in the opposite direction!

Somehow, we must co-ordinate with the town of Mandeville for future Le Mans starts.

    Race committee members are:

    1. Gerald Kuehler

    2. Will Jeffcoat

    3. Dennis Ledet

    4. Gail Ledet

    5. Mary Lindsey

    6. Larry Young

    7. Jane Willis

    8. Barry Pierce

    9. Bill Coates

    10. John Cramer 11. Joel Lindsey

Members of the Race Committee took part in an orientation to the Sea Shepard with John Cramer on Saturday February 4, 2006. John took us through the steps of using the Sea Shepard for races. The steps to follow are clearly outlined in a routine John printed several years ago, and John demon-strated each step in preparation, motoring

and putting the boat back in the slip and closing up.

We took a short voyage out on the choppy lake, and members of the commit-tee took turns handling the boat.

Race Committee concluded the session with a demonstration of race management involving the flags and signals.

  • As you know, we are host-ing the GYA opening day this year. This event, among others in-cludes the infamous

    Masters Race.

The “Masters Race” is where the “crème de la crème” of the over 50’s compete for the coveted red jacket. Our very own Janet Miller-Schmidt, (must have been given a dispensation on account of her position – since she does not look a day over forty) has kindly accepted to carry our burgee as one of our three person team. Given the number of applicants for the remaining two positions, we will be holding qualifiers, . . . . . yes, you guessed it, on our newly re-furbished Flying Scotts, hence the hurry.

Please do not be shy & register for the try-outs, keep an eye on your e-mail, the web

Dedicated in 1941 to the memory of Auguste Capdevielle, this trophy is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the Gulf Yachting Association. Auguste Capdevielle served as Commodore-President of the GYA during the years 1936 – 1939. He was also Commodore of the Southern Yacht Club, and for many years served as SYC ’ s Race Committee Chairman. This is the 64th year of competition between GYA clubs for this championship. There are only two older competitions in the GYA – the Lipton (1920) and the Knost (1938).

    Dear Friends,

It looks like we will be busy during March.

The month is starting with the Mardi Gras Capdevielle (NOYC March 4 & 5).

Our club will be represented by Billy Ross, David Bolyard, Jeff Lindheim & Colin Ross.

Join me in wishing them good luck and fair winds.

During the same week-end we will also be launching our “Save the Scotts” cam-paign - where our four club Scotts will be sanded, primed & ; painted – the rig-ging checked and overhauled ready for their new sails.

Please do volunteer for this campaign, we can do with more hands and the sooner we get our Scotts race-worthy, the sooner we can put them on the water and to good use.

On March 16, GYA Commodore Janet Miller-Schmidt et al will be Chicago bound for the U.S. Sailing Association spring meeting. Janet will be giving a report on the status of the Gulf Coast clubs. USSA is also exploring different options for assistance in the recovery effort. Several clubs across the country have already stepped up with offers of equipment, cash, and labor. PYC has even received a letter and bur-gee from a club in South America, whose members offered their prayers for our area sailors at their opening day event. For more infor-

mation on the spring meeting, visit www.ussailing.org

On a sad note, we recently learned that long-time member Bob Weaver passed away in February. Bob was a well-known fixture around the club and on the race course, al-though in later years he was not able to participate as often as he would have liked. Those of us who remember him will surely miss the friendly smile he always had on his face. Private services for Bob's fam-ily were held in Baton Rouge.

  • Club operations continue to be strong. Bar revenue in January 2006 was double that of January 2005. Social ac-tivities are well attended and are adding to the club’s bot-tom line. At our most recent board meeting we had 9 new membership applications to consider. Once our new club is built, I am confident that we will have a surge of new mem-bers. Of course we must plan for the larger membership population but what a pleasant chore that will be.

Recently, the flag officers and Stacie, the club manager, met with a representative of the Small Business Administra-tion. We are one step closer to finding out what kind of fi-nancing will be available from

the SBA. The meeting went well and it appears that there is a good chance that we may be able to get low cost, long term government financing at at-tractive terms and rates. We will

keep the member-ship ad-vised of all options available as soon as all of the data is in.

On a lighter note, there will be auditions on Wednesday, March 8, at 7:00 pm for the new sound on Lake Pontchartrain, The

Pontchartrain Yacht Club Band. What should the name of the band be?????

There will be a short finance Com-mittee meeting on Thursday March 9th at 7pm.

Finally, I would like to sadly an-nounce the death of Bob Weaver, a lifetime member of PYC. Bob, who died on February 16, 2006 had

lived aboard his boat, Driftaway on Bayou Castine for over 20 years. Could that be a record? If anyone knows of a longer live-aboard on Bayou Castine, please let me know.

  • I think I’d like to title this article “PYC Hospitality”, which is kind of like “Southern Hospital-ity” – only better!

As I write this, many things are in the works for our little Club. On the weekend of March 18th, we will hold the Annual South shore sailover with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Party on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. The food will be jambalaya (catered by Benedict’s) and music by Frank Fairbanks (Commodore’s Ball).

The following weekend, March 25th – 26th, we will host the first weekend of the Leukemia Cup Regatta. This will be a VERY BIG regatta similar to School’s Out/Back – to-School. Details are cur-rently being worked out for this event, but I do know one thing – WE WILL NEED A LOT OF HELP FROM OUR MEM-BERSHIP.

Other upcoming events include the GYA

    Lets Be Social

    VOLUME 39 ISSUE 3 Page 9

Since I am new to the PYC board and new as the membership chair I could definitely use some help. Would you like to be part of the membership com-mittee? Please give me a call 985.674.9715 or email me at [email protected]. I’d like to get a group of 5 to 8 people from different PYC interest groups…racing, juniors, new to club, and long-time members. I’m convinced that our new facility is going to make membership in PYC a “hot commodity,” so consider helping me.

Opening Day on May 6th and even an event for Sun-fish Re-gional’s!

The reason for the “PYC Hospitality” is because I

know that we can pull these big events together in our little double-wide and invite our fellow GYA members to come enjoy themselves.

I’m sorry I can’t offer more details right now, you’ll have to watch your e-mail for updates as they develop.

As always, I want to thank everyone for their help and support in the kitchen!

    January 9th – January 13th, 2006

PYC member Bob Hodges is the current class president of the US A-Class Catamaran Association. The class just recently held its midwinter race week in Islamorada, FL. Here’s his re-port.

US A-class sailors have been having a love affair with the Flor-ida Keys for several years. It started in 2000 when the USACA had its North American Championship at Rick’s Place in Key Largo. In November 2001, the class returned to race the 1st Annual Coconut Grove Classic and came back in January 2002 to sail the Tradewinds Regatta followed by its first Mid-winter Championship all held in one week. The A’s didn’t re-turn until January 2004 when 15 boats raced a week long two regatta format again at Rick’s Place. In 2005, the same format was repeated but Rick’s Place had become Azul Del Mar and there were 24 boats in attendance. It seemed like the formula was working. For 2006, the class approached and got interest from the Islander Resort in Islamorada, FL. The class started “pumping” the event and to its great delight, 42 sailors showed up to participate. The fleet was deep with four Olympic medal-ists, two world champions, 5-6 sailors who had won national or North American championships in the A-class and Tornado classes.

This year’s event consisted of two regattas, the 5th Annual Co-conut Grove Classic followed by the A-Class Midwinter Cham-pionship. Most sailors arrived on Saturday, January 7th. Racing took place on Monday and Tuesday and Thursday and Friday. On two nights, a post racing debrief was moderated by Jay Glaser.

The week of racing provided an excellent test of the venue as the planned 2007 A-Class World Championship event site. It met all of the class’s expectations. The sailing site was bor-dered between the shore line and an outer reef about 3-4 miles east of the sailing site. There was plenty of room to setup a race course with any wind direction. There was more than enough room to store 42 boats and more. The north side of the resort property had plenty of room to store trailers and in the future containers.

The facility had a pool, hot tub, and an excellent bar/restaurant. Continued page 11

A fresh water hose was provided to rinse boats and the management was more than friendly and accommodating to the sailors. The boat storage area was quite protected and sheltered. There were no problems getting on or off the water with two launch ramps.

The racing was fantastic with a range of conditions for the week. The Coconut Grove Classic had 12-16 knots of wind for both days with some challenging chop and wave action on the race course. The Mid-winter Championship had lighter winds with 8-10 knots on the first day and 6-8 knots on the second day with flatter wave conditions.

Bob sailed well to finish 9th in the 42 boat fleet in both events. Bob used both events to try out new sails he just got from Ullman Sails and Glaser Sails for his new A2 A-class that he purchased this fall. His goal for this year is a top three finish at the North American championship which will be held in Bristol, RI in September.

If you are looking for boat storage here at the club, please contact the office to

register the boat and be assigned a space before moving the boat over to the

yard. The boat yard is near capacity and just because a space may appear open, does not mean it is. Your cooperation is

    appreciated.
