The Auspiciousness of the Special Conditions for HisHoliness Receipt of the Holy Teachings

Every Dharma practitioner has his/her owncondit ions of receiving teachings. In accordance to the previous merits soaccumulated through countless past lives, inrelations to the various causes and conditionsand environmental factors at that time, the

wisdom torch in receiving teachings might thenbe ignited so as to help oneself to eventually cutoff the cords of Samsara.

His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche, who having astrict and stable style of Dharma practice rootedrmly on the ground, was born in 1913 as theMind Emanation of Guru Rinpoche, which hadbeen prophesized by many Realized Masters,Saints and Mahasiddhas of the past (please referto the article on The Contemporary Mahasiddhawith Many Prophecies(1) in Issue 6 of the Lakeof Lotus). So, many people would like to know:

how were the conditions of receiving teachingsby His Holiness?

The following is a truly enlightening story that was told by the Yaktse KhenpoSonam Rinchen who, being a long-time student of His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche,is now in his seventies and is doing a strict three-years retreat at Samye in Tibet. We were, indeed, very fortunate to be able to hear such a wonderful story froma very faithful disciple of His Holiness who, having very pure Samayas with HisHoliness and who does not want to be disclosed, was able to hear this story directlyand personally from Yaktse Khenpo himself.

The Cause and Effect of Loyalty toOnes Genuine Guru

As His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche knew very well thatthe path for a disciple in the practicing of Vajrayanateachings is to put in ones total trust and condenceupon ones own Guru in order to have any spiritualaccomplishments, instead of trying to nd another Guruwho might be better than the present one, as one would

most likely thinkso. If the latter case had happened, theSamayas (vows) between the Guru and the disciplewould then be broken; resulting in the appearances ofmany obstacles and obstructions for ones own spiritualattainments, and would nally be proven to be moreharmful than good. With this in mind, His Holinessfurther sought the advicefrom Sera Khandro Rinpocheon His further studies and trainings.

From this simple incident, one can see that His Holinesshad, indeed, realized the most fundamental and essentialquintessencein the practicing of Vajrayana teachings, namely: never, within ones own Mind, to part with ones

own Guru. Even though it was a sincere suggestioncoming from a very close relative as His own uncle, HisHoliness did not easily take this up. The steadfastnessand correctness of His Holiness heart were muchhigher, in both degrees and levels, when compared withHis khenpo uncle.

Upon the sincere request from His Holiness, SeraKhandro Rinpoche replied by saying: Dont hurry, I willcheck it out for you ! Hence, Sera Khandro Rinpochetried to check out in her dreams as to where His Holinessshould go for His further studies and trainings.

It was in one of her dreams that Sera Khandro Rinpoche

dreamt of a very big crossed-vajra, with the DzogchenKhenpo Shenga Rinpoche sitting in the centre of it, whilethere were four Dakinis holding onto the four corners ofthe big crossed-vajra. She then saw the four Dakinis atthe four corners slowly lifted up the Dzogchen Khenpo tothe sky. At that very moment, she prayed to the DzogchenKhenpo, seeking his advice concerning His Holinesswish to go and study Vajrayana teachings under him. Then, the Dzogchen Khenpo showed a gesture, with hisnger pointing towards the south direction [which wasmeant to be seeing you in Guru Rinpoches Palaceof Lotus Light (Zangdok Palri)], and then he slowlydisappeared into the sky.

Knowing from her dream that the Dzogchen Khenpo willbe passing awaysoon, and so Sera Khandro Rinpocheadvised His Holiness the next day by saying that: Soonafterwards, Khenpo Shenga Rinpoche will no longer bethere, and so you dont have to go there by now. HisHoliness just followed her advice without the slightestdoubt, and, indeed, it was one year after the dreamthat Khenpo Shenga Rinpoche had really entered intoparinirvana (in 1927).

His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche was very young (ataround the age of 12-13 years old) when both His Holinessand His uncle, who was himself a learned khenpo fromthe Dzogchen Monastery, were to rst meet the GreatWisdom Dakini Sera Khandro Rinpoche(1899-1952, thedaughter-in-law of Terchen Dudjom Lingpa, 1835-1903).Then, later on, when Sera Khandro Rinpoche was aboutto transmit the Vajrayana teachings, His Holinessuncle asked His Holiness to go outside and wait, due totheir long-time traditionthat only those who were capable

enough, and were considered to be ripe vessels, wouldbe allowed to receive the Holy teachings.

As a young lad of only 12 years old, His Holiness wouldbe considered by most as of a very different caliber fromthat of His uncle, who was himself a learned khenpo andhad practiced the Dharma for years. Thus, most peoplewould tend to think that there would a vast difference interms of their levels of understanding and of practice, and so it would be just natural that the levels and kindsof teachings that they should receive would be verydifferent.

However, it was to everybodys surprise that SeraKhandro Rinpoche said to His Holiness uncle: Eitheryou benet, or he benets, who knows? So, leave itas it is, and both of you can stay behind to receive theteachings. In this way, Sera Khandro Rinpoche saw thatboth His Holiness and His uncle were of the same caliberand of the same level, and thus gave the same teachingsto both of them. With hindsight, it was later to be proventhat Sera Khandro Rinpoche had, indeed, possessed themostunique wisdom eyes!

With this, Sera Khandro Rinpoche started to transmit theHoly teachings to both His Holiness and His uncle, all theway from the Preliminaries (Tib: Ngondro) to the most

important Great Perfection (Tib.: Dzogchen) teachingsof Thodgal.

In order to have more appropriate advices for HisHoliness Chadral Rinpoche, as to where His Holinessshould go for His further studies and trainings, the GreatWisdom Dakini Sera Khandro Rinpoche continuouslyprayed in her dreams. Then, for many nights, she haddreamt of the same auspicious dream.

For the same auspiciousdream during each night, SeraKhandro Rinpoche saw a big ganachakra offering bygroups of Dakinis. For each and every time of thesedifferent ganachakras, the same Lama is coming toreceive the offerings. For a special night, Sera KhandroRinpoche specically prayed for His Holiness Root Guruto have some signs. Then, she dreamt of the same dreamagain, with the same Lama coming again to receive theoffering during the big ganachakra.

This time, Sera Khandro Rinpoche asked the Lamathe question: who are you?, and the Lama simplyreplied by saying: I am the Khenpo of Kathok Yudra(Tantrayana).

The next day, Sera Khandro Rinpoche advised HisHoliness: You should go to nd Kathok KhenchenNgaga in Nyoshul Shugushar (Jangchub Jonpalung)and showed the signs of having her two thumbs uptogether, one on top of the other, meaning that HisHoliness will become the Best of the Best. Sheprophesized ( ) for His Holiness that KathokKhenchen Ngaga (Ngawang Palzang, 1879-1941) hasbeen His Holiness Guru of Past Lifetimes (cherab-kyi-lama ).

    With thecompassionate spiritual advicesand instructions

from Sera Khandro Rinpoche, His Holiness ChadralRinpoche started to go and meet with His predestinedRoot Guru (tsawai-lama) Kathok Khenchen Ngaga atthe age of 15 years old.

Kathok Khenchen Ngagi Wangpo Rinpoche, alsoknown as the Great Khenpo Ngawang Palzang,

was the manifestation of the Indian Great Scholar(MahaPandita) Vimalamitra, and was a great renownedGreat Realized Master (Mahasiddha) of the time. Aswhat the Great Wisdom Dakini Sera Khandro Rinpochehad prophesized, His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche waslater to become one of the Main Lineage Holders andHeart Sons of the Great Khenpo Ngawang Palzang.

The appraisal of His Holiness realizations can simply beshown by the fact that the Great Khenpo himself had

openly remarked: His Mind is no different from mine! When a Guru had such a high regard for his owndisciple, then it can truly reect how high the levels ofpractices and realizations that His Holiness could havebeen.

The admiring thing about this enlightening story is notso much about the wonderful events of the dreams, butrather it is the great loyalty and trust that His HolinessChadral Rinpoche had towards His Guru Sera KhandroRinpoche. If His Holiness had secretly wentover to meetthe Dzogchen Khenpo Shenga Rinpoche, He wouldprobably not being able to meet with His most inuential

and predestined Root Guru, and would probably endup in wasting a lot of His time and energy.

Even up till now, the profound memory and deepaffection that His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche had for HisGuru Sera Khandro Rinpoche have never been faded.Regardless of all those people, who might have highranks and statuses in the Tibetan hierarchy, that haverequested for the teachings of this Special Lineage of theWisdom Dakini Sera Khandro Rinpoche, His Holinesshad simply courteously declined their requests.

The reason is very simple: His Holiness will only givethese precious teachings of this Special Lineage to

those people who are suitable vessels, and who areloyal and faithful, and will keep their pure Samayas. On the other hand, His Holiness will not allow theseprecious teachings and this Special Lineage to becomedeteriorated and contaminated by putting these into thewrong hands of those other people.

The way for following and serving a Genuine Guru mostsincerely and whole-heartedly is, indeed, the most short-cut way for one to achieve spiritual attainments whilepracticing the Vajrayana teachings. Yet, on the otherhand, if one follows a fake guru and be loyal to him/her, then it will only become the source for ones limitless

sufferings in the hell realm for countless of aeons! (To be Continued)
