Issue 27 Term 3 2015 Week 4
At Lake Illawarra High we are working extremely
hard to ensure that everyone understands what our
core values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBLITY and
SAFETY look like in everyday practice. It is so
important that all members of our community are
able to understand the importance of treating each
other as we like to be treated ourselves, taking
ownership of our own actions and behaviour and
ensuring that ourselves and others are safe.
To help support this understanding our school has a
number of initiatives that encourage our community,
especially our students, to see what these values look
like and to put them into practice. Each fortnight we
are focussing on different aspects of our values and
explicitly teaching our students how to put our values
into action. Students who demonstrate these values
will be acknowledged.
The vast majority of our students demonstrate these
values every minute of every day of the week.
However just like learning any new concept, a small
minority of students need extra support in order to
achieve school expectations.
Well done again to all of our students who are
participating in the wide range of extra-curricular
activities that the school offers. Whether you have
done your best on the sporting field, performed in a
music or dance concert, participated in academic
pursuits such as Maths competitions or Tournament
of the Minds, committed to looking after our younger
members of the school through Peer Support,
supported cultural activities like looking after our
recent Japanese students visit or engaging in one of
the many programmes that are run through the
school, congratulations. We are proud of you!
I wish all our Year 12 students good luck in their trial
HSC; the exams are starting this week. It is important
the Year 12 use the remaining 3 weeks of school wisely.
This should be a time to reflect on areas that may need
improving and seeking help from their teachers to make
these changes. It is not a time to wind down and relax
because it is too late to make improvements before the
HSC, because not only do we have 4 weeks of school
after the exams, but there are several weeks after this
until the exams start.
Once Year 12 have finished exams we have a short
break before Year 11 start their Yearly exams in week
nine. It is the end of the preliminary course for Year 11
and it will be time for the move to start the HSC from
term four. Good luck Year 11.
We are continuing to work on getting students into full
school uniform and appreciate your co-operation with
this. It can be more difficult during the cooler months
with clothes taking longer to dry. We do acknowledge a
very high percentage of students come in full uniform
every day and thank the parents for the effort this takes.
The warmer weather is on its way, this should make it
easier to maintain correct school uniform.
The subject selection process is underway for Years 8
into 9 and 10 into 11. It is important that students select
carefully as they are choosing a two year course of
study. There was a good turnout at the subject selection
evening, so hopefully our students are making informed
decisions about their pathways.

Students are welcome to undertake work experience
while they are at school. Year 10 students have the
opportunity to organise this with the Careers Adviser
for week 10 of Term 3. Senior students who are
participating in Vocational Education Training
courses at school or TAFE often have compulsory
placements over the two years, but if they are seeking
extra experience to assist in obtaining jobs or to
increase their resume, they can also organise extra
work experience.
On Tuesday 4
th of August a group of students in Year
10 and 11 were involved in a hands on workshop at
school to help them understand about their personal
social image and learnt about practical ways to
present for interviews. This EDGE workshop
involved a local careers presenter, beautician,
hairdresser and stylist giving expert advice. It was a
fun and informative day where students were inspired
to make a difference and stand out from the crowd
when applying for interviews.
Port Harbour is an interesting and secretive place that
a small group of students were privileged to go and
visit and find out about the different types of
industries and jobs that exist in the area. This
involved jobs in railway, stevedores, pilots on ships
and logistics warehousing. The excursion was an eye
opener to the students about providing future
opportunities. The added bonus was having a bus
tour in secure areas of the park and seeing rows and
rows of hundreds of cars as well as being up close to
watch an enormous ship come through the narrow
harbour.
Students applying to university for next year have
some dates to remember:
Early Admissions to UOW open 3rd
August
UAC applications (compulsory if applying to any
university) open 5th August
UOW Open Day 15th August - which gives a final
chance to make decisions on courses on offer.
Year 10 students have the opportunity to practice
their skills and prepare for future interviews by
taking part in the Mock Interview Day on the 13th
August. Students are expected to have a resume,
portfolio and cover letter prepared for a „pretend‟
employer based on a chosen advertisement.
Preparation for the Mock Interview Day has begun
through all English classes and students will receive
additional interview skills and practice. Thankfully,
various people from the community, including
Employment and Apprenticeship Agencies have
volunteered their time to speak and listen to the
students. This will give all who participate a real life
experience of an interview. Feedback and overall
evaluation of the five-minute impression in these
interviews will be provided to students, which will
assist them in preparing for future interviews when
applying for jobs.

Lake‟s MC students have used their colour
knowledge and fabric dying skills to tie-dye calico to
make joey pouches for orphaned joeys at the
International Fund for Animal Welfare. These joeys
need to be kept in a warm and quiet pouch-like
environment while they recover and grow. Carers‟
need a ready supply as pouches are changed regularly
after each feed and up to six pouches can be used per
animal each day! These students hope their
thoughtful and creative donation will help these
unfortunate animals recover comfortably. Stay tuned
as we have written letters to IFAW requesting a
photo of a joey in our pouches, which we will share
in an upcoming newsletter!
We studied life on Norfolk Island as part of our
Geography unit. We learnt life on Norfolk is different
to life in Australia. The original name of the island
was Pitcairn Island. We learnt they speak their own
language (Norfuk). The Norfolk Pine is a symbol on
their flag.
We made coconut loaf which is popular to eat on the
island. Coconut is $8 kg on the island and they get
their supplies shipped over from mainland weekly.
We learnt how to do weaving and we made a
bookmark.
Thankyou
MCC Class
Year 9 Peer support training was run over two days at Windang Bowling club. 25 students successfully participated in the training program and are now eligible to become Peer Leaders for the incoming Year 7 students of 2016. The students displayed and developed many skills over the 2 days such as teamwork, leadership, communication and problem solving. Further training will be provided to these students in Term 4. On behalf of Miss Unicomb, Mrs O'Malley and Mrs Hancock we thank these students for their efforts.

The Marshmallow Challenge
In week 2, over 80 Year 8 and Harbour Centre
Students participated in the „Marshmallow
Challenge‟. Students were given the task to build the
tallest tower possible using raw spaghetti, sticky tape
and a marshmallow. The aim of the task was to teach
students the importance of communication,
collaboration and team work. When students faced an
obstacle they used their team mates to overcome the
issue, work together and try again.
The students were supported by teachers from the
HSIE staffroom, as well as Mr Thistlewaite, Colleen,
Ms Jeuring, Mr Chandler, Mr Hicks and a group of
Year 11 student mentors. This challenge is the first
of a series of 5 that will be carried out across Term 3,

Mr Bain
TAS Teacher
Hey there! My
name is Sophie
and I‟m the new
School
Chaplain. I‟ve
taken over from
Amy this term
and I‟m really
excited about
working here at
Lake Illawarra
High School and
getting to know
the school
community.
My role will look similar to what Amy was involved
in, being available to support the Learning and
Engagement team in various ways as well as
supporting the students, staff, families and wider
school community.
I have undergraduate degrees in Visual Arts and
Communications and am currently completing a
Masters in Art Therapy which has a foundation in
Counselling practice. I‟m excited to be able to use
these skills and training to support and encourage
students through the struggles of high school life as
well as other things that come up in the school
community. I also hope to run programs and groups
around friendship, self-esteem, self-care and other
topics. These will all be voluntary and if you would
not like your child to participate, you can simply opt
out.
As a chaplain, my role is to care for the emotional,
social and spiritual wellbeing of students and the
school community, through pastoral care regardless
of faith or beliefs. I believe it is important for young
people to think through ideas of faith and spirituality
and I‟m happy to chat through anything! As a
Christian in this faith-based Chaplain role, I am very
respectful of the guidelines that prohibit me from
proselytising and evangelising, however I hope to be
a help for anyone who is exploring any spirituality.
I will be around Tuesdays and Thursdays and I‟m
always available to talk about anything related to my
role. I can be contacted by the school phone number,
or found in the Library.
Kind Regards,
Sophie Harris
