T? INTRODET ION
This report contains the resu l t s and reconmendations from a geological
and geochemical exploration program conducted over the Kelsall Lake claim
group in noxthwestern Br i t i sh Columbia. The object of the program was t o
assess the significance of s i l t anomalies on the claim group. Kelsall
Lake is s i tua ted 2 miles ea s t of the Haines highway, some 10 miles South
of the Yukon - Bri t ish Columbia border (Figure I ) .
The wr i te r was assis ted i n the f i e l d by Mr. William Ostafichuk of Ottawa,
Mr. Dan Ph i l l i p s of Whitehorse and M r . John Tarde of Montreal. Helicopter
support was provided by Trans North Turbo A i r Limited of Whitehorse; and
expediting services by Terricon Enterprises Limited, a l so of Whitehorse.
The time and cos t s of undertaking t h i s program are recorded i n Appendix I.
GEOLOGY
The area was mapped on a scale of 1 inch - 3,000 f ee t . Local r e l i e f
is approximately 1200 feet and the area is open and t ree less . Outcrops
were only found on the northeast ridge and on a small ridge t o the
southwest (Figure 2). A large mass of d io r i t e or meta-andesite outcrops on
the northeast ridge and plateau. Andesite outcrops south of the d io r i t e ,
and intercalated bands of limestone, rhyol i te , and andesite outcrop t o t the southwest. Northeast and northwest trending f a u l t s cut the area.
GBOCHEM STRY
Soi l s i n the area are transported and immature, Samples were
collected by spade from ei ther the "B" or "C1' horizon and were analized
by Barringer Research Limited i n Whitehorse by acid digest ion and atomic
adsorption f o r Cu, Pb, and Zn.
Soi l samples were collected a t 100 foot in te rva ls along l ines 300
f e e t apar t (Figures 3 - 6 1. No s ign i f ican t Pb anomalies ex i s t ,
Several s ign i f ican t Zn anomalies occur between l ines 12 + OOS and 45 + OOS
and the base l i ne t o 18 + OOB. The pronounced Zn anomaly west of the base
l i ne between 33 + OOS and 39 + OOS is probably associated with stream
dispersion. Copper anomalies are more widespread than zinc. The most
s ign i f i can t l i e between l ines 12 +OOS and 42 + OOS and generally coincide
w i t h the Zn anomalies i n t h i s area. The d i f fuse Cu anomalies on the
east s ide of the grid may be due t o a higher background associated with
the d i o r i t e . The anomalies are somewhat discontinuous, but t h i s could be
expected on s teep slopes w i t h transported s o i l s .
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Several s ignif icant Cu and Zn anomalies occur on the grid, but no
fur ther geochemical work is warrented.
It is recommended that a reconnaissance type B-M geophysical survey
be run over that pa r t of the grid containing the geochemical anomalies. It
should cover the area from 6 + OOS t o 45 + OOS and from the base l i ne t o
18 + OOB. Pickets w i l l have to be placed on the grid before the
geophysical survey can be undertaken, This spec i f ic area should a l s o
be mapped on a scale of i inch t o 300 f ee t .
