Valves to be adjusted to minimize forward left and right travel differentials with reverse lever in first notch forward of center or equivalent. 2. For backward gear, only full backward left and right travel differentials need be tested. 3. For cut-offs, only forward gear need be tested. 4. Enter in notes if dead centers, eccentric cranks or eccentrics have been tested or adjusted immediately prior to valve motion report data acquisition. 5. If engine is equipped with screw reverser instead of latch lever reverser then notes shall describe means used to convert screw reverse positions to equivalent latch lever positions.

INDICATED STEAM PORT MARK - The indicator reading at the point where the steam edge of the valve is in line with the steam edge of the port. Used in lieu of port marks placed on the valve stem.

MAXIMUM INDICATED VALVE TRAVEL - The indicator reading at the point where the valve is farthest from the center of its travel.

MEASURED PISTON TRAVEL AT CUT-OFF - The distance the piston has traveled from dead center at the beginning of its power stroke to the point in its power stroke where the steam edge of the valve is in line with the steam edge of the port with the valve moving in the direction to close the steam port.

STEAM PORT OPENING TRAVEL - The maximum distance the steam edge of the valve attains from the steam edge of the port with the port open to admit steam to the cylinder.

TRAVEL DIFFERENTIAL - The difference between the front steam port opening travel and the rear steam port opening travel. Expressed as a dimension or percentage.

CUT-OFF, PERCENT - The percentage of the length of the power stroke of the piston during which steam is admitted to the cylinder.

IN LINE, VALVE EDGE AND PORT EDGE - The position of the valve where an edge of the valve relative to the edge of a port is such that any movement of the valve in one direction will open the port relative to the valve and any movement in the opposite direction will close the port further relative to the valve.

Images below show application of 2 inch throw dial indicator to an inside admission piston valve locomotive cylinder block in order to indicate the position of the valve. The contact point of the dial indicator has been positioned to directly contact the piston valve body, not the valve stem. Determining the dimensions for the indicated steam port marks is made possible by viewing through the valve inspection opening in order to ascertain when the steam edge of the valve is in line with the steam edge ofthe port.
