Drew McLachlan LAKE COWICHAN GAZETTE Lake Cowichan town council welcomed two new members to the table at their inaugural meeting last Tuesday (Dec. 2). Despite being newcomers to politics, both Carolyne Austin and Lorna Vomacka had a lot to say about the future of Lake Cowichan and what they hope to achieve in their first terms. Vomacka brought up a topic that, for nearly a decade, has gone unresolved — a seniors care facility in Lake Cowichan. In 2007, the town attempted to buy the J.H. Boyd property, located on Oak Lane, for the purpose of development, but could not obtain voter approval to borrow the proposed $765,000. The property was eventually sold to a private developer, John Kelly. Kelly planned to redevelop the property, possibly into a 22-bed care facility, though his plans never came to fruition. Seven years later, the closest seniors care facility remains in Duncan, but Vomacka hopes the town can change that. “There was a lot of fear and misunderstanding surrounding the vote [in 2007],” she said. “But there’s an understanding that something needs to be done. I think voters will be more willing to work with the town if it comes up again.” Austin was less specific regarding her plans for her first term, granted she had been sworn in only minutes prior. She said that one of her biggest priorities is to create a more engaging relationship between the community and council. Despite voter apathy becoming a growing issue in all levels of government, she said that she hopes a hands- on approach will be able to get citizens more involved with council. “You have to be a spokesperson for the town,” Austin said. “Just talk to people, meet them outside the post office, and hopefully they’ll come to meetings. I used to go to council meetings a lot, but it’s always the same 12 people.” Austin, having lived in Lake Cowichan for 30 years and been involved with the community through the Seniors Association, the Lake Bloomers gardening club and other organizations, said she feels her experience will carry over into her new position as councillor. “By being involved in the community, you understand people a bit better,” she said. The inaugural town council meeting, held at Centennial Hall, was attended by approximately 40 residents, hopefully a good sign for things to come. At the meeting, Mayor Ross Forrest appointed each councillor to a committee: Vomacka was appointed to parks and recreation, Austin to public works and engineering services, Bob Day to economic and sustainable development and Tim McGonigle to financial administration. Austin was also appointed to the board of the Vancouver Island Regional Library, and Day to the CVRD board of directors as the town’s representative. The Lake Cowichan Municipal All Candidates meeting brought in a full house Monday night. Estimates were that close to 200 people attended to listen to municipal candidates discuss their platforms and answer questions from the Chamber of Commerce and the public. Candidates were seated alphabetically and asked questions in random order. Candidates spoke with passion, humour and enthusiasm.

Chamber of Commerce hosts All Candidates meeting at Centennial HallAspen GainerLAKE COWICHAN GAZETTE

The Lake Cowichan Municipal All Candidates Forum took place Monday night at Centennial Hall from 7 to 9 p.m.

The hall was packed; more chairs had to be brought out and once those were lled people stood at the back of the hall.

The Chamber of Commerce hosted the forum, which was moderated by George deLure. He asked the candidates a series of pre-determined questions created by the Chamber, which the candidates hadn’t heard before. Once the Chamber’s questions were nished, they opened the oor to questions from the public.

Candidates answered in a way consistent with their platforms.

All candidates touched on the need for a seniors care facility,

improvements to infrastructure, and the need for a way to entice business into the downtown core. Each individual answered with passion, earnestness, humour or resolve, as they saw t. Each individual also demonstrated their conviction to act on behalf of the town and serve in the way they thought would best serve the townspeople. The forum was at some points heated and at some points relaxed as candidates and the public listened and interacted with each other.

Below is a summary of how candidates answered one of the Chamber’s pre-determined questions. Responses are summarized in the order they were answered.

If (re)elected, what would be the one goal you want to achieve in the next four years?Rocky Wise: Two new ball parks.

Lorna Vomacka: Affordable family housing.Bev North: People want to have fun and see the lighter side of life. What do you (townspeople) want?Put some drive into it, laugh a little and we’ll get through.Tim McGonigle: “Fun’s my middle name.” A base for revenue, apart from property taxes, and other tools to raise funds to pay for projects in town. For example, a gas tax. We need to lobby the province for continuous funding.Frank Hornbrook: A balanced nancial statement with no debt.Ted Gamble: An assisted living building, which might take some time. In the meantime, a local market in the new square, generating local economy.Bob Day: A downtown business marketing program that draws new business to the area. Hubert Crevels: Eliminate most of the stop signs in town by removing

them or changing to yield signs.Carolyne Austin: Affordable housing for seniors and families.Ross Forrest: Seniors care facility. I’ve seen too many spouses separated from each other when they get old. I want to see people stay together as they age. We also need to attract other partners in businessWendy Klyne: I have a vision for how I want the town to be–a busy downtown core bustling with people; a new elementary school.Over 150 people in the community are 80+ years old, so we need assisted living.Kyle WylieFocus on planning with purpose for the future. I want to leave the community better than it was when I came here. It’s not just about what I do for the next four years but how I lay the foundation for the next 20 years.

Questions from the oor ranged from water and sewer costs, a new town hall building, the future of the old ranger station, downtown revitalization and an open door policy at the municipal of ce.

The municipal vote takes place on Nov. 15 this year at Centennial Hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. To register as a resident voter, you must be 18 years of age, a Canadian citizen, a resident of BC for at least 6 months prior to voting, a resident of Lake Cowichan at least 30 days prior to voting, and eligible by law to vote. To register on election day, bring two pieces of signed ID. One piece must also have your address.

Advance voting is open to eligible voters at the Municipal of ce on Nov. 5 and Nov.12 between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Lake Cowichan’s new town square, dubbed T’suubaa-asatx Square by local First Nations, saw its of cial naming ceremony on Oct. 31. Pleased with being granted naming rights, the Cowichan Lake First Nations tribe recently began work on a “reciprocal gift” for the town — a wood carving to be placed in the town square.

Project coordinator and tribe member Aaron Hamilton said the tribe was “blown away” when council rst suggested the square be named for them, and discussion began almost immediately on how they could show their gratitude.

“The Chief and council wanted

to thank the town by giving a gift to the whole community,” Hamilton said. “We wanted it to tell who we are, and to symbolize the relationship between us and the town.”

A wood carving was eventually decided on, though Hamilton referred to it as “the rst of many large projects we’re hoping to do in the future.”

Ron Hamilton, a Nuu-cha-nulth artist from Port Alberni, will be designing the carving. Ron Hamilton is well-known across BC for his previous work, which includes ceremonial curtains that were used at the 2010 Vancouver Cultural Olympiad. With the design nearly nalized, Aaron Hamilton said it will likely be ready to show to the public in the new year. He

also said that the design will be a representation of the tribe’s culture and history.

“We may be small, but we are our own nation,” he said.

A community fundraiser is also planned for January, which will allow residents to participate in the rough carving of the pole for a donation.

The log that will be used for the carving, a donation from Western Forest Products, arrived last Thursday (Dec. 4).

The carving of the pole will begin in January, and is expected to take six to ten months, weather permitting.

Aaron Hamilton said they’re hoping to of cially unveil the carving by Labour Day Weekend next year.

New garbage and organic waste bins arrived at single-family homes in Lake Cowichan last week, giving residents a month of preparation before the town begins its pilot curbside waste program next month.

The program provides single-family homes with one 80-litre garbage bin, one 80-litre organic waste bin, and a kitchen bin, and will require residents to separate organic waste from non-compostable waste. The town hopes that the separation of waste will decrease tipping fees, which are charged by weight.

The pilot program is slated to run through 2015 before its full launch.

Initially, only single-family homes will be served, though public works and engineering services superintendent Nagi Rizk said that its still up in the air whether multi-family homes will be incorporated before 2016.

The pilot program will be

reviewed in order to gather data before the full launch. Rizk said they expect to know more regarding logistics, such as pickup routes and schedules, as well as what the full program will cost the town. He also said he expects the overall ef ciency of the program to be higher by 2016, hopefully lowering the cost for the town.

“It’s taken two years for us to get to this point,” he said. “It’s a long haul, there’s going to be a learning curve before we settle into it.”

Though other municipalities on the Island have had similar programs in place for several years, Rizk said that being a “latecomer” to the program has had its advantages for his department.

“We’ve been able to look at other municipalites, like Ladysmith and Duncan, who have been running these programs for years,” Rizk said. “Also similar towns on the mainland, other provinces and even in the US, trying to nd the

best- tted program for our own community.”

Though the bene ts of the program may not be clear on a local level, Rizk said the program’s bene ts go beyond Lake Cowichan.

“These issues don’t stop at municipal boundaries,” he said. “Overuse of land lls, creating methane gas, that affects us all. I personally take pride in living in a community that does its part. We should feel good about doing it, because by not doing it, we’re harming somebody somewhere.”

The rst scheduled pickup for the program is set for Jan. 12, and will continue bi-weekly until spring.

More information on the program, including what can be put in the organic waste bins, can be found online at town.lakecowichan.bc.ca or by calling public works and engineering services at 250-749-6244.

Holidays are a time for celebrations, parties and family events. In the dark and cold of winter we bring light and warmth into our homes with candles and a crackling fi re. Please remember to make safety your number one consideration.

Never leave candles unattended. When you leave a room blow them out. Never leave children alone with candles. Flames can ignite nearby combustibles, such as drapery and seasonal decorations, so locate candles carefully.

Holidays mean special meals. When cooking use care to avoid burns and scalds. Consider creating a “safe zone” around cooking areas. Burns should be treated immediately with cool water and may require professional medical attention.

Holiday lights brighten up many homes. Be sure to check holiday lights before installing them and replace older ones with newer lights that produce less heat. If you decorate a cut tree, be sure to water it regularly to prevent it from drying out. Unplug your tree lights when you leave the room. Never use candles on a Christmas tree.

Decorations inside your home make everything look special. Use non fl ammable decorations. With additional lights many people use extension cords; do not run cords under carpets, across doorways or where they may be damaged. Never overload electrical circuits.

For smokers, be particularly careful. Use proper ashtrays, even when smoking outside. Empty ashtrays into metal containers, not wastebaskets.

Remember: a working smoke alarm saves lives.

Lake Cowichan fi remen say, “Let’s make this Holiday season safe and free from destructive fi res. You have a responsibility for fi re safety.

“Help your local fi refi ghters When you have a fi re safe holiday you are helping keep fi refi ghters safe.”

Best wishes for a fi re safe holiday season!Lake Cowichan Fire Department

BC Ferries moves to on-line booking

Tom FletcherBLACK PRESS

BC Ferries plans to move ahead with a website upgrade that will allow passengers to pay for tickets online, avoid reservation fees and pay variable fares depending on demand.

The computer upgrade is to be phased in starting in 2017, with a pilot project for passengers on the main Vancouver-Vancouver Island runs. The system will offer discounted fares for off-peak sailings and advance booking without the current reservation fees.

BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan said the project will cost $10-15 million, but based on the experience of other systems, it will increase ridership and reduce costs.

“It’s a variable priced booking system that’s used by golf courses, hotels, airlines,” Corrigan said. “It’s the way the world is moving. Depending how far in advance you book, what restrictions you’re willing to put on yourself, and when you want to play, stay or travel, you’re going to get a different price.”

The price range will be determined by the pilot projects. Passengers will still have the option of showing up at the terminal and paying to board, with a posted price that will be adjusted according to demand for that sailing.

The new booking system was proposed two years ago in a review of ferry operations by Gord Macatee, who reviewed operations when he was appointed BC Ferries Commissioner in charge of rates and service delivery. Macatee must approve the move before it can go ahead.

BC Ferries’ point-of-sale system is 25 years old, and requires manual collection of fares.

BC Ferries projects the new system will increase vehicle and passenger traffi c by three to fi ve per cent as it is extended to more routes. By adding food, gift shop and other services to the online order system, the corporation hopes to generate an annual revenue increase of $11 million to $18 million, mostly due to increased traffi c.

“People can actually pay for the full ferry service, including the buffet maybe, and some other services when they pay, so when they get to the ferry terminal, they’re basically just verifying their purchase and moving onboard the vessel,” Corrigan said.

It’s a variable priced

booking system used by golf

courses, hotels, airlines. It’s the

way the world is

moving.

Treading history on Mount GoodTo: Editor, Lake Cowichan Gazette

Reference: Dec 3, 2014 article on “Retreads hike Maple Mountain and Mount Good”

Reference was made in the write-up for the Mount Good Trail to two old-timers. As one of the two “old-timers”, I can give your readers some background and history as to how the trail started to become popular by local and out-of town hikers.

George deLure (the other old-timer) and myself (Bill Gibson) started looking for a nearby trail in 2007 to prepare for hiking the West Coast Trail in 2008 to celebrate our respective 70th birthdays, both being staunch members of the class of 1938. My dad, Ben Gibson, hiked the West Coast Trail when he turned 70 so I couldn’t be outdone by my dad and my good friend George deLure agreed to undertake such a crazy adventure. The Mount Good Trail, an overgrown and unusable trail in 2007, needed lots of clearing to be usable, but the trail was a perfect training ground for two old timers who seemed out of place

in a modern society, Many weekends were spent cutting and removing broom which inhibited all but the most intrepid hiker from using the trail – even bears didn’t like using the trail as it was so overgrown in sections. After clearing the trail, we made regular training hikes up the trail with weighted backpacks which were added with additional weights as our conditioning improved. The training culminated in an overnight campout at the end of the trail with all the gear we intended to take with us on the West Coast Trail, some 60 plus pounds. We got to know every nook and cranny on the trail to the point that we started giving the various turns and stops a name so we could tell each other what we were talking about when we redid the trip over a few beers.

The rst corner on the Mount Good Trail was named “Coffee Cup Corner” because we found the remnants of a Styrofoam coffee cup at that location. The second stop, “Grouse Corner”, named because we often chased up grouse at that corner. The next stop, “Scott Lookout”, the last place to get water before entering

the forested area, was named after the ashes of the late Brian Scott were scattered there by the family in the fall of 2010. The next stop, which is just a short distance into the forested area is “Yarder Sleigh” because just above the path at this point is the remains of an old wooden yarder sleigh, used by old-time loggers, probably some 60 plus years ago. The next stop “Antler Corner” named because we found an elk antler at this location. The last stop, also the end of the trail, we named “Base Camp” because we camped overnight several times at this location. On one occasion got up the next morning to reach the summit area of Mount Good, which was equivalent, in our minds, of reaching the summit of a very high mountain, maybe even Mount Everest!

We have started to even see Geocachers using the trail as somehow word of mouth have let others know of this once hidden trail which is now available to all who choose to hike the trail and enjoy the wonderful vistas of Cowichan Lake.

The local train station, which today houses Kaatza Station Museum, was a going concern back in 1925. The railway was still the main link to the outside world with several runs shipping out hundreds of logs (thousands over many years) daily. By this time, although some of the town’s residents owned automobiles and a few even had telephones, many used the railways single passenger car to reach the outside (Duncan and onward).

The train made regular trips which made it a convenient way of transporting all types of freight to and from “the Lake”.

Most of the local stores, especially the general store, had their merchandise regularly

delivered by train adding to the daily activity at the station. At one point in time, the station even served as a temporary maternity ward, when the station masters wife, with no time to reach the Duncan hospital, delivered her baby at the station!

One of the early train station masters was Edward “Eddie” McColl who arrived at the Lake in 1920 after being hired by the E & N (Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway) as Station-Agent-Telegrapher. Communication by telegraph had been in operation since the inception of the station in 1912 and continued on for many more years until telephones became commonplace.

Eddie McColl and his wife, the former Beatrice Rumming, who taught school here between 1920 and 1921, joined in community activities “playing their instruments” at local dances. Not the only McColls to set foot in the community, Eddie’s mother Bessie McColl taught school here in 1925.

The McColl family lived at the station in the adjoining family quarters with their ve children including daughter Vaughn,

who is believed to be the only baby born — April 6, 1925 — at the Cowichan Lake railway station. The family left the area in 1927, with McColl passing away in 1960 after fty years of employment with the E & N Railway.

Vaughn, one of six McColl children, later attended high school in Duncan. After she left school she joined the RCAF and was stationed at Pat Bay (near Victoria) where, in 1944, she met her future husband, Andy McMorland.

The couple eventually moved to Youbou and for several years their children, including daughter Dinah, attended Yount Elementary School where their father Andy was principal. Some of the children later attended LCHS in Lake Cowichan. After leaving Youbou, the McMorlands moved to Duncan where they eventually settled and where Vaughn McColl-McMorland died last month.

Hyundai composes a memorable new SonataHyundai is a company that pushes the envelope in terms of styling, vehicle content, engine choices and value, mak-ing others carmakers take notice. The last generation Hyundai Sonata, released in 2011, is a perfect example. The “Fluidic Sculpture” design language really set the pace for the mid-size class of cars. The competitors that followed, like the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, all took styling chances after that Sonata was introduced. The same too for the engine development, including smaller turbocharged 4-cyl-inder engines and fuel saving direct injection technology; compared with the competition all this technology was ahead of the curve. Now, just a few years later, the Sonata gets another refresh, making this car more compelling than ever.

LooksAs dynamic as the Fluidic Sculpture design was, it didn’t age well. Cars that are heavily styled can date quickly. With this in mind, Hyundai has backed away from the fluid approach to a more sculpted design that shares some styling cues from the top-of-range Hyundai Genesis. The front features a squarer grille opening, edgier bumper and front chin-spoiler. The base model is fitted with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine has and 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels with LED daytime running lights, halogen headlamps or HID lights on the limited trim. The performance oriented 2.0 Turbo Sport model, seen above, comes with a two-toned front spoiler, 18-inch wheels, standard HID headlamps, quad exhaust tips and a lower diffuser on the rear bumper. The top trim levels of both the 2.4L and 2.0 Sport have a blacked-out section of the front grille which signifies the car comes with adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning system.

InsideAs with the outside, the interior has been given a total refresh, no basic tweaking here. The same, more muted design is at work here too, now the all-new centre console is wider and flatter than the last car. This makes the car feel more open and airy, the brushed aluminum surround is bright and the way the buttons and dials are fitted is second to none. Fit and finish is one area that Hyundai does as well, if not better than most. Even on the base $23,999 GL model, the Sonata comes with standard heated front seats, back-up camera, Bluetooth, 5-inch radio/backup screen, satellite radio and USB

connectivity. The $26,299 GLS adds a power driver’s seat, heated leather steering wheel and heated rear seats, and these are just the two entry-level cars. All cars now come with additional 2.5 cm of rear legroom and a very useful trunk that is expandable, thanks to a 60/40 split rear seat.

DriveBoth the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and the 2.0L turbo have been carried over from the last model but they have been modified to produce better torque delivery and fuel economy. Hyundai has dropped the horsepower output from 198hp to 185hp in the 2.4L and limited the torque to 178hp. The 2.0L turbo also receives a horsepower drop from 274hp to 245hp and the torque drops from 268 lb.-ft to 160 lb.-ft. Hyundai claims that the torque is lower in the RPM range and the fuel consumption is improved. The experience behind the wheel of the turbo is still very invigorating but not as hectic as the last model, it delivers a more usable driving experience. Power is smooth and refined; the turbo feels like a V6 without the accompanying fuel bill.

VerdictHyundai has done it again, delivering a very attrac-tive car, full of features, at an attractive price. 2.4L models range from $23,999 to $32,999 in the top Limited trim. This model has most of the features found in the top 2.0L turbo but without the added power. The base 2.0L turbo starts at $30,999 and the top Ultimate model, seen here, is $34,799. Both the Limited and Ultimate get the forward collision warn-ing system and lane departure safety features, plus they also get adaptive cruise control. For 2015, the Sonata is a big step foreword in design. The added safety features will be attractive and the constant pushing-of-the-envelope from Hyundai is welcome.

The LowdownPower: 2.4L 185hp or 2.0L Turbo with 245hpFill-up: 9.8L/6.7L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $23.999-$34,799

We have recently enjoyed two local hikes, one starting at the small park in Marble Bay and the other starting from South Shore Motel and following the former railway line up the side of Beaver Creek.

The Marble Bay hike started from a small parking lot just off Marble Bay Road and took us up the hill past the community water tank, over the hill and down a very steep path to the edge of the north arm of the lake. The climb was a real cardio workout and needless to say we had a signi cant rest before heading on over the top. The downhill section was equally challenging and tested our ability to work our way down a very steep path.

We sat and had a quiet lunch by the edge of the lake as we looked at the evidence of earlier logging and housing oat homes on the bend of the lake. We also noted how high the water was now, compared to an earlier summer hike. After lunch and with prior permission we crossed a private property, walked down the lane and through the forest until we reached the end of Nantree Road. We then made our way back along Marble Bay Road to the parking lot.

A number of us had to make a coffee stop at Tims as we came back through town.

On the next week we had planned to enter Service Main and hike up Skidder Mountain. However, with the promise of heavy rains and fog on the mountain, we instead opted for a hike along Beaver Creek and around the north side of Beaver Lake. And the heavy rains did not arrive until late in the evening. We started this journey at the back of the South Shore Motel and followed the former railway grade along parallel to the creek which now is owing quite full. We were reminded of the severe wind storm of a few weeks back as we climbed over and crawled under huge downed trees both here and later in the hike.

At Service Main we headed out to South Shore Road and were pleased to note that the unof cial garbage dumping has greatly reduced since the gate was moved to the edge of the road. Then it was down into the hollow where we carefully crossed the busy road and went up to where the Salmon Enhancement project work was evident. Here after admiring

the enhancement signboard, we located the trail that followed along the north side of the lake winding up and down on the wet and green trail.

At this point we were a bit uncertain about a section of trail but realized that much effort has been put into clearing and maintaining this interesting trail around the north side of Beaver Lake. We understood that many people know and loved these trails and kept them passable. Well around the lake we located the old logging road that took us back to Lakeview. For a nal blast we crossed the campground went along a trail and back on the oating walkway, then to Point Ideal to eat our lunch and enjoy a coffee at Kidd’s B&B.

We are always amazed to nd so many trails and walking paths right here in our own backyard. We have been told by old timers how they used to jump on and catch rides on the train that travelled along the side of Beaver Lake and how they arrived at school covered in soot. There is so much history in the forests around our town.
