Classes for 2013 At this time of year all schools are looking at their enrolment numbers and possible class structures for 2013. Some families may have heard through different sources, that we will be having three classes at Holmwood PS next year. I wish to advise all parents that our class structures will not be known for certain until students return to school at the beginning of next year and we look at our enrolment numbers for 2013. However, as Principal it is my job to ensure that I have plans in place this year, for the different scenarios that MAY happen next year.
Melbourne Cup Hat Day! Next Tuesday 6th November is Melbourne Cup Day. To get into the spirit of this national event, children are encouraged to wear a fancy hat to school for Melbourne Cup Day! This can be an old hat decorated with flowers or things from home, a swaggies hat, an akubra hat or even a fascinating fascinator!

PCYC “Dance Obsession” flier 3-6 Class News This week the Primary class have worked very hard in all areas of their schoolwork. In Maths both Stage 2 and Stage 3 have been working on decimals. Stage 2 have been working with Mrs Skene on tenths and hundredths and explored this concept through lots of games and small group activities. Stage 3 worked with Mrs Lewis on converting decimals to fractions and adding and subtracting decimals. Year 6 have also been learning how to multiply decimals and checking their answers using a calculator. In HSIE the classroom has been a hive of activity as all groups have been focused on getting the research elements completed for their PowerPoint presentation on a significant site of their choice. The groups have chosen a wide range of sites across Australia including Shark Bay, the Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu, Wellington Caves, the Devil’s Marbles, the Daintree Rainforest, Philip Island,
Frazer Island and the Olgas. Groups have a set list of criteria which they will be assessed on when presenting their Powerpoint to the class. Mrs Skene has been teaching this unit and all students are very excited and engaged in this topic - we can’t wait to see the finished products! This week we continued working on Information Reports in our writing. The students are becoming skilled at note-taking and highlighting key points in their information research and then putting this information into their own words. This week’s topic was Lake Eyre and Mrs Skene showed the class some very interesting video clips about this amazing Australian landmark. Next week we are looking forward to our EXCURSION! For those Primary students not attending, we hope you have an enjoyable time with Mrs Watt and Mrs Nottingham. I know they have some exciting and fun activities planned! Have a great weekend! Kind Regards, Mrs Jenny Lewis 3-6 Class Teacher K-2 News This has been a very productive week as the children utilise the many new skills that they have developed this year. The spelling and written skills continue to be enhanced by revision at home. This is enabling greater independence in group work and in all class work. Reading and comprehension skills continue to develop at a faster rate as sight words become easier and fluency develops. In our oral reading lessons we are focusing on oral reading fluency. Further encouragement by you at home is very powerful and greatly benefits your child. The Money Matters in Maths is enabling children to become more skilled in additions, subtractions, times tables and division. Children love playing shops and it is even better if they can play the game at home with you too! In our class unit, we compared and contrasted Asher’s Great Grandfather’s Scales from the past and plastic scales from the present. The children then presented their preference and their
reason. Hence, forming the skills for Persuasive Writing and Expositions. This assists children to become more expressive in oral and written skills. This can also be encouraged at home to widen your child’s vocabulary and enhance confidence.
Asher used his Grandfathers scales to weigh
Mrs Kiely’s handbag!
William and Georgia with Georgia’s bear – a toy she has had since she was a baby which she shared with
the class during our discussions about the past. In Fitness, the class has embraced Gymnastics with confidence and enthusiasm, building on existing skills from previous years. Thank you for your continued support. Mrs Deirdre Kiely K-2 Class Teacher
