Mother’s Day has passed and I hope you took the chance on that

wonderful day, as you should do every day, to let your Mother or Mother figure know how special she is to you. Now, equally important, Father’s Day is approaching. Again, no need to wait for just that one special day to express to your Father or Father figure, how very important he is to you. Try something just from your heart, like a poem or a card made from scratch. I know those are things that children do a lot, however, it still works as a grown up child. :)

What Makes a DadGod took the strength of a mountain,

The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle’s flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add,

He knew His masterpiece was complete,

And so, He called it … Dad

As the memory of that tax refund check begins to fade, it’s now time to turn our financial thoughts to the budget

(translation – what’s our assessment going to be) for next year. We held a CDD budget workshop last month and we will discuss and vote on the preliminary budget at our meeting on May 22nd at 6:30pm. This is your opportunity to speak out on what you think we should, and should not spend our monies on.

Here’s an example of one of the items we’re considering - We currently have expanded staff hours (9am to 10pm) at the clubhouse, from approximately June 1st to September 30th. The rest of the year our staff hours are from 9am to 5pm. This leaves the clubhouse open, but unsupervised for 5 hours a day. Why is this an issue? We have recently experienced some vandalism during those hours.

We have also received reports of disruptive or disrespectful behavior by some of our younger residents and their guests during those same 5 hours. So, do we expand staffing (that costs us all more), do we close the clubhouse during the “off season” at 5pm, or do we continue things as they are?

On a related note – the pool lift chairs have been installed at both the clubhouse and the cabana pools. It is our hope that our residents who have been previously unable to use the pools will now be able to do so. It is also our hope that these chairs will not be used by those who do not require their use. Please understand – these chairs were expensive. If you do not need the access that these chairs provide and you or your guests damage these chairs, there will be significant consequences.

I also want to take this opportunity to give a “shout out” to Dan, our clubhouse manager and his wonderful staff. This group of people do a great job of keeping things working for all of us. From always having rooms set up the way we need them, to organizing events like our monthly Movie Night, to making significant behind the scene repairs – these folks are the best. Thanks to Dan, Frank, Dale, Linda, and Rhys!

Finally, I’m always interested to know what’s on your mind. How can we make Lake Bernadette an even nicer place to live? v

lbcc bbQThe Lake Bernadette Community Center features a built-in barbecue grill that is available for resident usage while at the community center.

Residents are responsible for cleaning the grill after use, and it’s available during community center staffing hours only. Hours vary by season and are as follows: winter months from 9am-5pm, and the rest of the year from 9am-9pm. Grill accessibility is on a first come, first served basis, or can be reserved through the management office.

Pool rEmiNdErThe swimming pools at the Community Center are a fantastic asset to Lake Bernadette during the hot summer months. We invite all members to come and enjoy the amenities, but want to remind parents/guardians that all children who are not fully potty-trained MUST be wearing swim diapers while in the pool. We understand that accidents happen, but this kind can be 100% preventable. A fecal contamination in a swimming pool causes a mandatory 24-hour closure and sanitization process. For your convenience, we offer appropriate swim diapers at the community center management office for $1.

spring has sprung and with it, some beautiful weather. The rather mild winter

and lack of sufficient rainfall has created near-draught conditions in many parts of the country.

We saw large sections of Texas burn in 2011 due to historic drought and searing heat resulting in the worst wildfire season on record. Now, nearly a year later, Florida is bracing for a potentially destructive wildfire season due to intense drought. Lack of rain has left water levels in swampy areas in southern Georgia and northern Florida at historically low levels.

As of this writing, Florida firefighters are struggling to contain a +30,000-acre blaze in the Pinehook Swamp, near the Georgia state line. (Remember the Green Swamp wildfire of 2004

which left large portions of I-4 impassable due to heavy smoke.)

This fire (County Line Fire, started by a lightning strike on April 5th ) is burning vegetation below the surface as well as above, making it far more difficult to extinguish than typical forest fires, and it has spread dense smoke across northern Florida, reducing visibility to as low as one-half mile at times.

Nearly 1,400 wildfires have burned about 90,000 acres in our State with the peak of wildfire season still to come. Florida’s dry season, which typically runs from late October to late May, has left the state high and dry. We are currently in the third-driest, two-year period on record. We should all be cognizant of these very dry conditions and take proper care when disposing of cigarettes/

cigars and other potentially flammable material.

Also with spring, comes a time to spruce up our yards, clean out the dead scrub brush, and trim up our trees and bushes, especially along roads and sidewalks. New growth, especially branches on trees overhanging our streets need to be trimmed up to at least ten feet to allow vehicles clear travel. When disposing of brush and tree cuttings, remember to bag the brush and cut branches down to three-foot lengths. Our trash contractor requires cut branches and limbs tied up in small bundles for easy handling.

One other note when trimming your plant growth: trees and bushes overhanging other folks’ properties are the owner’s responsibility to trim. Please be a good neighbor and keep your

branches cut back from your neighbor’s yard.

A change in delivery of the “Pennysaver”/”Flyer” from USPS to being thrown in the driveway is causing damage to our storm drain and retention pond systems. Please pick up all papers thrown in the driveway as soon as you see them. If you want to stop the “Pennysaver”/”Flyer” distribution, call 813-635-3350 to stop delivery or use the automated response on their website at www.theflyer.com and follow the link under Customer Service/Contact Us.

I would be remiss if I didn’t again remind residents about careful navigations on our streets. Please slow down! While speeding has been reduced, there are still some who refuse to drive at a reasonable speed on Montford Drive. Report speeders (license number, date/time of incident, vehicle description) to the Sheriff. (Ph: 813-929-1204)

Finally, belated Happy Easter and Passover wishes go out to our Christian and Jewish neighbors.

Respectfully, Jim Burns - President, HOA

The counties to our north are already in Phase 3 water restrictions and we in the

Tampa Bay region are likely to be there within days or weeks. That means that we’ll all be restricted to watering our lawns one day per week as is the usual restriction in Pasco County. Water features like fountains will be able to operate only 4 hours per day. Water restriction enforcement will be greatly increased. And restaurants will begin only serving water upon request. Now is when your Florida-Friendly Landscaping ™ with its drought resistant plants show their capacity do well in these dry conditions. But even the most drought tolerant plants cannot conserve water by themselves. It takes an informed and engaged homeowner to realize water savings. This fact was brought home to me recently when I was out certifying the landscapes of new “green “ homes built to the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) standard.

Despite 100% of the landscape plants being drought tolerant, one homeowner told me that now he pays more for his monthly water bill than for his electricity. That is what happens when nobody readjusts their irrigation controller schedule after the new landscape has become established. That would be like having a well insulated and tightly sealed energy efficient home and then leaving the windows and doors open. Now would be a good time to check your irrigation controller schedule to make sure it is set to water only

on your assigned watering day, preferably in the early morning. Then check to see how long each zone is set to run. You can confirm that you are applying only ¾” of water a week by placing some tuna or other straight sided cans in your lawn during your next irrigation cycle. Anything more than ¾” is just more waste since ¾” is enough to wet our sandy soil down to at least 8 inches which is likely deeper than the roots of Floratam St. Augustine grass usually are found at most homes. Other grasses such as Bahiagrass, Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass have deeper root systems and if they run out of water, they’ll go dormant instead of dying. A good rule of thumb for pop-up sprinklers with a fixed fan shape is to set it for 20 minutes to apply ¾” of irrigation. For rotors with their rotating narrow stream of water, it takes about 45 minutes to apply the same ¾” of water. That difference in output is the reason that sprays and rotors should be on separate zones for turfgrass irrigation. And landscape plants should be on a separate zone too since their deeper more extensive root system means that they probably don’t need weekly watering, especially if they are drought tolerant. Chris Dewey is the Florida-Friendly Landscaping ™ Program Coordinator in Pasco County Cooperative Extension, a position jointly funded by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Pasco County. They sat with backs erect, instruments poised to play. Slowly, in unison, they

turned their attention to their conductor. Purposefully his extended arms rose up. First I heard the horns, woodwinds sounded, strings joined in followed by that impressive looking and sounding tuba. Percussion and keyboards sounded a beat.

Was that a xylophone I heard? The musical tones of 58 musicians swelled the church hall. So began the weekly rehearsal of the Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is reminding the community of its vision that

all kids have the opportunity to reach their full potential, and they’re asking for your help. The agency pairs volunteer mentors with children facing adversity, so that local youth in Pasco, Polk and Hill-sborough Counties have the one-to-one guidance they need—guidance that leads to academic success and positive choices.

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches “Bigs” (mentors) with “Littles” (mentees) throughout Pasco County, and it has two programs it’s specifically recruiting for right now, thanks to grant funding provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. One pro-gram targets at-risk youth, ages 9 and up, who live in Dade City. Another program is called Operation Bigs—a new effort to provide mentors to children (also ages 9 and up) in military families. While

many of the children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and low-income households, that’s not always the case. “Operation Bigs is our newest mentoring program, and provides support for many single and two-parent military families who appreciate the opportunity to provide their child with more academic support as well as new cultural and other opportunities from another trusted adult,” says Stephen Koch, CEO and President of Big Broth-ers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. To find out more about this free program, contact Shannon Dombkowski 813-769-3610 or [email protected].

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest and most successful mentoring organiza-tion in the country, and it holds itself accountable for demonstrating positive academic and social outcomes for the children served. Last year, in Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties:

• 96% of our Littles were promoted to the next grade level

• 95% showed an increase in self-confidence

• 99% had no involvement in the juve-nile justice system

The agency depends on community support, in the form of both volunteers and donations, in order to achieve these results. It costs approximately $1,000 a year to make and maintain a match between a Big and a Little, to cover back-ground checks and ongoing professional support services.

The Zephyrhills High School Odyssey of the Mind team is headed to the World Odyssey of the Mind tournament in Iowa for the first time in twenty years. This is a remarkable accomplishment! Thank you to Mr. Cecil James, OM coach, and all the following members of the team: Savanna Wright, Ashley Ramirez, Jessica Geiger, Shelby Osbourne, Hali Fisher, Rosey Kettelle-Daily

The ZHS Band for the second straight year, was rated Superior at the State Band Competition. This is the FIRST time in the history of the District School Board of Pasco County that such a feat has been accomplished. I am so proud of the students, parents, and the band director, Russell Schmidt.

The Lady Bulldogs Auxiliary, under the direction of

Tonya Campbell, also went to the state competition for the first time.

The Girls Tennis Team won the District Championship, and Sara Vandeberg is headed to the State Tennis Tournament. The Drama department had an outstanding performance of Dracula. ZHS continues to do great things. We have a lot to be proud of. The chorus department also qualified for state for the first time, without having a feeder pattern program. This is huge, since most students haven’t had choral instruction since the 5th grade. The Art Department had a student win the Richard Nugent 5th Congressional District Award. As always, my staff and I appreciate the continued support as we move forward to making ZHS the best high school in Pasco County!

Did you know that your heating and cooling system typically uses more energy than any other system in your home? U.S. Department

of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy estimates that about 43% of your bill is devoted to heating and cooling!

You can easily save money by appropriately maintaining and upgrading your HVAC system. However, says the EERE, upgrading to an energy-efficient furnace alone will not have as great an impact on your energy bills as using the whole-house approach to reducing energy consumption. Homeowners should combine proper equipment maintenance and upgrades with appropriate insulation, air sealing, and thermostat settings. The EERE estimates homeowners doing so can cut energy use for heating and cooling, and reduce environmental emissions, from 20 percent to 50 percent.

Heating and Cooling Tips from the eeRe : • Set your thermostat as low as comfortable in

the winter and as high as comfortable in the

summer; you can save up to 10% on heating and cooling costs with this simple adjustment

• Clean or replace filters on furnaces once a month or as needed

• Turn off kitchen, bath, and other exhaust fans within 20 minutes after you are done cooking or bathing; when replacing exhaust fans, consider installing high-efficiency, low-noise models

• Invest in system maintenance; hire a professional to inspect your system once a year

• During the heating season, keep the draperies and shades on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to enter your home and closed at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows

• Check for disconnected or crushed duct work; if air flow is restricted your system can be overworked

• During the cooling season, keep the window coverings closed during the day to prevent solar gain.

LongTerm Savings Tips from the eeRe • Select energy-efficient products

when you buy new heating and cooling equipment; contractors should be able to give you energy fact sheets for different types, models, and designs to help you compare energy usage

• For air conditioners: look for a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER); the current minimum is 13 SEER for central air conditioners while ENERGY STAR models are 14 SEER or more.
