Introduction
It gives us huge pleasure to welcome you to our 2013 /14 Winter Exhibition in Rheged.
The new Rheged Gallery is a lovely space in which to display the high quality of all our member`s works, as we are sure our following FOLAS members would agree. Much to our delight, this is the 8th Winter Exhibition which the Lake Artists Society has engaged in, under the auspices of the Rheged centre. A venture which is proving to be increasingly successful.
Once again some of our artists will also have their own solo exhibitions during the year, which are advertised in the FOLAS (Friends of the Lake Artists Society) magazine, which is sent out twice a year. Information is also on our website. www lakeartists.org.uk. For more information regarding activities and benefits, please see page 24 in catalogue.
We hope you enjoy this year`s Winter show, which is continuing, throughout January until February 2nd.
We also look forward to perhaps seeing you at our next Summer Exhibition in Grasmere to be held from 26th July to 3rd September 2014.
Vivienne Pooley President

Tom Oldham describes himself as ‘an objective painter’. He tries wherever possible to paint from direct observation, in order to capture the immediacy of the subject. He says ‘I enjoy the sensual qualities of swiftly applied paint and am not interested in achieving a highly finished photographic effect.’ Tom prefers to keep his brushwork clearly evident in his painting, eschewing an overly blended, ‘smoothed-out’ finish.

Elizabeth Walsh gained her MDES RCA degree in textile design at the Royal College of Art. Walsh paints detailed watercolours and ink drawings of seasonal subjects, mostly plants, birds and small wildlife from the area around where she lives. She has been a member of the Lake Artists Society since 1997 and also exhibits at Upfront Gallery and with Carlisle and Cumbria Artists and Manx Art exhibitions.
Ian Walton has exhibited widely both in the UK and overseas, and has work in collections here and abroad. His work’s themes are often autobiographical and it contains narrative elements with recall incidents, places or memories over periods of time. It is primarily land-based and deals with the emotion of being amidst and part of nature, whilst reflecting the sometimes hostile edge which is so much part of it.
