Legacy (leg’ ǝ sē) n., 1. anything handed down from the past 2. a gift of property; a bequest

We can measure the legacy of Laguna Art Museum using a number of factors: its groundbreaking exhibitions such as Early Artists in Laguna Beach: The Impressionists, Surf Culture: the Art History of Surfing, and the upcoming Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964-1971; its educational programs that provide elementary school children with what is often their only exposure to art; its Permanent Collection that documents the span of creative output by California artists; and its historic roots linked to the development of the Laguna Beach art colony in the early 1900s.

Imagine if you will a sunny yet cool sixty-four-degree day in Laguna Beach on February 16, 1929. It was only about ten years after a group of local artists founded the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1918 in order to exhibit the finest artworks produced by its members. That day was the official opening of the

newly-built art association gallery sitting high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The new building opened after years of fundraising spearheaded by Anna Hills (1882-1930), a local artist and then president of the Laguna Beach Art Association. Many of the town’s residents trekked along Main Beach by foot or traveled by motorcar on the coast road to the opening celebration—a party that continued well into the evening. The gallery, designed by Myron Hunt, a noted Los Angeles based architect, still stands on the same site—although you wouldn’t recognize it due to a number of remodels over the years that have changed the building façade. The original gallery remains as the largest gallery space at Laguna Art Museum (the Steele Gallery), and is quite literally its artistic, spiritual, and structural heart.

Nearly twelve years later, in 1941, Mrs. William Swift Daniell (widow of the artist) took on the task of building a permanent collection of art for the art association. Her efforts resulted in donations of nearly thirty works by such prominent Laguna Beach artists as Joseph Kleitsch, George Brandriff, Thomas L. Hunt,

Robert Hayden IIIPresident, Board of Trustees

Anna Hills, George Gardner Symons, and William Griffith. Seventy years later Laguna Art Museum’s Permanent Collection now numbers over 3,000 works by 966 different artists and covers the span of art produced in California from 1832 to the present. Thanks to the generosity of many donors over the years, of which eleven are highlighted in the recent Museum publication Collecting California: Selections from Laguna Art Museum, the Museum holds one of the most comprehensive collections of California art. Contrary to popular belief most great museum art collections are built from donations rather than from purchases; Laguna Art Museum is no exception.

The Permanent Collection is a legacy of the artists of California and those early Laguna Beach artists who transformed a quiet, idyllic, seaside town into a nationally recognized arts colony. This tradition continues today thanks to the efforts of a team of talented staff and volunteers as evidenced by the critical acclaim received for the Museum’s exhibitions and programs. In fact, Richard Chang, art critic for the The Orange County Register, selected Laguna Art Museum as the best art museum in Orange County in 2010.

Regional art museums, especially those that actively collect and preserve art, are stewards of the history, spirit, and vitality of the area they serve. I, along with the other Trustees, thank the Museum staff, members, donors, and volunteers for working to continue the legacy of Laguna Art Museum so that it may be cherished and appreciated for generations to come.

Laguna Art Museum is always on Pacific Standard Time

The year 2011 will be The Year of the Initiative for Laguna Art Museum. To start off with, as part of the Irvine Foundation initiative, the Museum recently completed its three-year strategic plan and will begin to execute some of the major plans called out in it, including the short-term goals of conducting an audience analysis survey and moving to a more sophisticated database management system. The Museum is also extremely excited about launching a new series of programs focused on bringing current members and new audiences to the Museum on a more frequent basis. You will hear more about this audience engagement program as it develops and is rolled out this spring.

This year the Museum is hosting Noguchi East Meets West and California Scenario: The Courage of Imagination. This will be among the first true retrospectives in California of Noguchi’s work, and is being done in part to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of South Coast Plaza’s California Scenario, Noguchi’s premier California installation, which was commissioned by Henry Segerstrom. The exhibition is part of the JapanOC initiative, a seven-month-long festival of Japanese culture that includes events at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, Irvine Barclay

Theatre, Bowers Museum, Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, Japanese American National Museum, and Newport Beach Film Festival.

One of the most amazing things to happen to California art in some time is the Getty’s initiative that is taking place in late 2011 and early 2012 entitled Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980. Pacific Standard Time focuses on the art of Los Angeles between 1945 and 1980 and involves, at last count, sixty art institutions from Santa Barbara to San Diego. As part of this initiative, Laguna Art Museum is organizing an exhibition entitled Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964-1971.

The mark of a great museum is its collection, and Laguna Art Museum took a major step this last summer in securing a superb new off-site space for its storage. A larger space than the prior off-site art storage space, the new site is allowing for greater ease of access to the collection. In fact, the Museum’s John Paul Jones exhibition was drawn almost entirely from the Collection, most of which is stored off-site. By being able to access the work more easily, it was possible to do the show in a short time-frame. Through the growth of the Museum Collection and these initiatives, Laguna Art Museum is amplifying its presence and impact in significant ways. Your support of the Museum is greatly appreciated and key to helping it move forward in becoming the premier museum focusing on California art.

Remember—Laguna Art Museum is always on Pacific Standard Time.

Laguna Art Museum's Permanent Collection reflects both California's historical interaction with its artists and the Museum's own idiosyncratic history. Founded ninety-three years ago as an "artists' space" to showcase recent art, the Laguna Beach Art Association matured in the 1940s into a collecting institution that, since 1972, has developed into a museum of American art with a focus on the art of California.

Over the years, Laguna Art Museum has been fortunate to take into its collection significant holdings by underrepresented individual artists who, though they have had little art historical attention thus far, have made significant contributions to regional and national art. These holdings have inspired a curatorial interest in the artists' work, enough of an interest to explore the possibility of future exhibitions.

Extract will consist of several small, one-person shows from the Collection by Florence Arnold, Elanor Colburn, Laddie John Dill, Jules Engel, Oscar Fischinger, Tom Holland, Peter Krasnow, Ruth Peabody, David Simpson, Vic Joachim Smith, Jean St. Pierre, and Chris Wilder. The exhibition will include brief curatorial statements on the importance of each artist's work, and will aim to assess the potential for fully-formed monographic exhibitions.

Landscape and Figuration from the Collection will feature exemplar twentieth century works from the Collection ranging from impressionism to modernism. Works from the early part of the century will include several of the Museum’s popular impressionist paintings, among them The Old Post Office (c. 1922–23) by Joseph Kleitsch and Golden Morrow (1931) by Granville Redmond. The exhibition will also feature works by artists who aligned themselves with a more modernist approach in both landscape and figurative works. Included will be Day’s End (1947)

Brad Coleman: Reproductions is an attentive look at one series of drawings, Coleman’s Sheep series. Upon first glance, the Museum’s upper gallery will appear to be occupied by twelve identical drawings of one sheep image. However, with careful observation viewers will begin to see differences in each drawing and will eventually see a noticeable difference between the first and last drawing.

The works are inspired by the sheep Dolly, the world’s first cloned animal (1996). Coleman begins with a photograph of Dolly. He then makes a drawing based on that photograph. In the next drawing, he attempts to make a meticulous copy of the previous drawing. He continues the cycle with each drawing being a copy of the preceding drawing. Through this rigorous endeavor, slight unintentional variances occur, producing a series that begins with a drawing of a sheep and becomes a drawing of a drawing. Brad Coleman: Reproductions will additionally feature still-life works in which the artist creates an illusion of one-point perspective by drawing rows of objects that are sequentially smaller in each row as it recedes toward a one-point perspective horizon.

Coleman was born in 1961 and raised in rural northwest Ohio. The figurative element of his work stems from this upbringing; he uses agricultural imagery and the vastness of the Midwest landscape. At the same time, Coleman’s work is equally rooted in conceptualism. Art critic Elizabeth Janus states, “Brad Coleman willingly enters into current discourse surrounding the relationship between man and the machine, between nature and science, with a vision that recognizes our own precarious place in the universe.”

June 12–October 2, 2011

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988, pictured left) is a well-known figure both in the art world and in the design world. Although Noguchi was born in Los Angeles, this will be the first retrospective of his work to be shown in California.

Noguchi East Meets West is an exhibition that consists of approximately fifty sculptures and fifty drawings, spanning just over sixty years of Noguchi’s career dating from 1927 to 1988. This exhibition is organized by the Noguchi Museum in New York, and the works are drawn largely from the Noguchi Museum.

As described in the title of this exhibition, Noguchi East Meets West not only speaks to the artist’s own dual ancestry (his mother was American, his maternal grandmother was part Native American, and his father was Japanese), but also to the fact that Noguchi traveled extensively during his lifetime, folding in the influences of cultures to which he was exposed. Similarly, his use of media became varied and fused; he combined brass and marble, bones and string, or aluminum and maple. He created sculptures featuring these combinations as well as sculptures singularly depicted in one medium, including alabaster, onyx, and clay. The exhibition will also include Noguchi’s architectural designs for gardens and playgrounds.

Noguchi’s contributions are significant to the history of art and design. Some of his works are still manufactured and sold today. Additionally, Noguchi can be connected to many noteworthy artists including Constanin Brancusi, Buckminster Fuller, Alexander Calder, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and John Cage, to name just a few.

June 12–October 2, 2011

Situated between two office towers at South Coast Plaza Town Center in Costa Mesa is Isamu Noguchi’s California Scenario (1980–82), a 1.6 acre metaphorical abstraction of California’s natural resources. Comprised of trees, plants, water, and sculpture, the garden is a space filled with beauty and tranquility. Commissioned by developer and philanthropist Henry Segerstrom, Noguchi offered a plan that challenged everyone’s notions of a garden.

California Scenario: The Courage of Imagination will feature a model of the park, memorabilia, photographs, and film footage of Noguchi’s California Scenario. This exhibition will be guest curated by Bonnie Rychlak, curator at the Noguchi Museum in New York. Rychlak has been curating exhibitions internationally and writing on Noguchi since 1996. This exhibition will be on display at Laguna Art Museum the same time as Noguchi East Meets West.

California Scenario suggests an outline of the vastness and diversity of California. With redwoods and cacti, among other indigenous plantings, the garden transports visitors to terrains ranging from the High Sierra to the deserts of Joshua Tree National Park. Noguchi gave the design elements in the garden evocative and allegorical titles such as, Land Use, The Desert Land, The Forest Walk, Energy Fountain, Water Use, and Water Source. The masterwork of the garden, Spirit of the Lima Bean, is a seven-foot-high granite sculpture made from seven boulders that fit together as tightly as those of the stone walls at Sacsayhuamán, near the ancient city of Cuzco in Peru.

California Scenario is celebrating its 30th anniversary. In 1980, when Henry Segerstrom envisioned a garden for the site of the family land that had once been a lima bean farm, he saw it as a lushly green and shady space. Instead, Noguchi created a bare, stone-covered plaza that with time has grown into a magical landscape. Together the artist and the developer created a garden surpassing anything that had been projected and, in Noguchi’s words, “Henry Segerstrom had the courage to imagine the ultimate within our limits.”

Noguchi East Meets West and California Scenario: The Courage of Imagination are part of the county-wide arts collaboration JapanOC celebrating Japanese and Japanese-American art and culture.

Noguchi East Meets West and California Scenario: The Courage of Imagination have been organized by the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, New York, USA.

From its inception in 1965 through the early 1970s, very few exhibitions and little research has been done on the contributions of the art department at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) to the development of contemporary art. However, during this period, UCI was the hub for the most advanced artists, students, and art writers on the West Coast. In 1964, John Coplans was named director of the University Art Gallery and recruited artists to come on board as art faculty. At the same time, Coplans was a writer and editor for Artforum and moved its headquarters from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Coplans was instrumental in bringing Philip Leider (editor in chief of Artforum, 1962–1971), Barbara Rose (author of American Art Since 1900), and art historian Alan Solomon to the UCI faculty. Tony DeLap, one of the founding members of the art faculty, and John McCracken relocated from San Francisco to teach there. Others drawn to the faculty included Vija Celmins, Robert Irwin, Craig Kauffman, John Mason, and Ed Moses. MFA students at the time included Michael Asher, Chris Burden, Marcia Hafif, Jay McCafferty, Alexis Smith, and Barbara Smith. Artists like James Turrell (DeLap’s studio assistant), Frank Stella (at the time Barbara Rose’s husband), David Hockney, and Bruce Nauman all contributed to the cultural ambiance of the campus at the time as well.

The year 1971 marks a significant end year of exploration for this exhibition. With creativity thriving significantly for six years on an expansive new campus, artists converged, new galleries were created, and developments for new models of artist-run, alternative spaces were taking shape; all before the City of Irvine’s incorporation into Orange County. That year also marks the Duchamp Festival at UCI organized by art historians Moira Roth and Barbara Rose. The festival included an exhibition, symposium, and a set of performances organized by UCI faculty and students.

Laguna Art Museum’s exhibition Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California, 1964–1971 will bring together the work of these seminal artists from this critical period, drawing connections among their work and contextualizing it in light of other historical developments in California and in the rest of the nation. In addition, Best Kept Secret will examine the impact UCI had on the roots of the Finish Fetish and Light and Space movements, performance, video, and conceptualism, as well as the development of the art programs at the University of California, San Diego and the California Institute of the Arts.

The Museum’s publication for this exhibition will draw on primary interviews; ephemera and documents in the archives of the artists and writers of the time; the archive of the University of California, Irvine; the Archives of American Art; and the Getty Research Institute. Tony DeLap is serving as the project consultant, and Laguna Art Museum's Curator of Exhibitions Grace Kook-Anderson is the coordinating curator.

Best Kept Secret is part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945–1980. Pacific Standard Time is a collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together for six months beginning in October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene and how it became a major new force in the art world. Each institution will make its own contribution to this grand-scale story of artistic innovation and social change, told through a multitude of simultaneous exhibitions and programs. Exploring and celebrating the significance of the crucial post-World War II years through the tumultuous period of the 1960s and 70s, Pacific Standard Time encompasses developments from modernist architecture and design to multi-media installations; from L.A. Pop to post-minimalism; from the films of the African American L.A. Rebellion to the feminist happenings of the Woman’s Building; from ceramics to Chicano performance art; and from Japanese American design to the pioneering work of artists’ collectives.

OsCene 2010: Contemporary Art and Culture in OCCurated by Grace Kook-AndersonFebruary 21–May 16, 2010

Major exhibition support provided by South Coast Plaza, the Contemporary Collectors Council, and the Hoff Foundation.

“It’s been four years since Laguna Art Museum staged its last OsCene, the survey exhibition meant to showcase the best of the Orange County art scene. After gaining cred for curating WoW: Emergent Media Phenomenon, recently hired chief curator Grace Kook-Anderson puts her stamp on the show initiated by predecessor Tyler Stallings. Keeping with tradition, she has included film and music (teaming up with film curator Keiko Beattie and music curator Ashley Eckenweiler), and keeps things edgy by emphasizing photography and video, drawing, installation, and performance over conventional painting or sculpture.”~ Daniella Walsh, Riviera Magazine

"OsCene 2010: Contemporary Art and Culture in OC, hosted by Laguna Art Museum, is a fascinating exhibition of the latest art created by Orange County and Long Beach artists. OsCene has become one of the most anticipated and closely watched events art lovers look forward to; something like an art barometer, every two years.”~ Roberta Carraso, Laguna News-Post

“The coolest piece, Kendall Carter’s Too Black . . . Not Black Enough, works on a host of levels, targeting the art world, race relations, corporate advertising, drug use in minority neighborhoods and the American flag, all in one poetic installation. Cheeming Boey’s Styrofoam cups embossed with intricate Sharpie drawings are a small revelation, their intricate black lines creating something beautiful out of something usually tossed onto a trash pile. I could sit for hours waiting to see Jim Jenkins’ kinetic installation of aluminum birds in a steel tree, Jacaranda, kick into gear.”~ Dave Barton, OC Weekly

Art ShackCurated by Greg EscalanteJune 13–October 3, 2010

Major exhibition support provided by Hurley and Blizzard Entertainment.

“Curated by the legendary Greg Escalante, Art Shack is an ingenious combination of art, architecture, pop-culture, and downright whimsy. Featured artists include Mike Shine, Don Ed Hardy, Shag, Liz McGrath, Jason Maloney and many others—each with their own unique spin on the theme. A more enjoyable art show may be hard to find.” ~ Jen Pappas, Hi-Fructose Magazine

“Overall, Art Shack is a hit, with occasional patches for quizzical head-scratching. It's an intriguing, interactive concept, one brought to engaging reality by Greg Escalante, guest curator for the exhibit. And perhaps most importantly, it's a pièce d'résistance in the old-fashioned sense, a show that defies art market rules determining what's commercially viable and what "ought" to be made to satisfy the whims of the marketplace.”~ Richard Chang, The Orange County Register

“Get in the car and get yourself to the Laguna Art Museum and start trespassing in a fantastical neighborhood curated by Greg Escalante who essentially invited his extended family of visionaries to create the diorama of their dreams.”~ Gwynned Vitello, Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine

After his death in 1999, he seemed to drop off the map for those documenting California art since the 1950s. Critics and art historians seemed to forget many of his accomplishments in painting, printmaking, sculpture, and teaching. A new exhibition at Laguna Art Museum aims to revive Jones' career and legacy. “Although retaining a foot at all times in the pop-cultural swamp, Duffy's work has steadily grown more formally and conceptually challenging, while simultaneously becoming more autobiographical and tinged with social commentary. Two of a 2008 series of silk-screened "paintings" on stained drop cloths—their lower thirds cluttered with a landscape of superimposed automotive logos—team with a new pair of his better-known modular grids of silk-screened plywood units (these ones depicting variations of contemporary outdoor sport magazines instead of vintage LP covers) that reiterate Duffy's almost incidental position as one of the most interesting and challenging painters currently working in L.A.”~ Doug Harvey, LA Weekly

Imagination Celebration: May 1, 201111:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

In 2010, Imagination Celebration celebrated its 25th anniversary in Orange County, and its fifth year under the management of Arts Orange County.

On April 24, 2010, Laguna Art Museum and Laguna Outreach for Community Arts (LOCA) presented Imagination Celebration: Open the Door to Art. Over 400 children and parents enjoyed the festivities at Laguna Art Museum. Admission was free thanks to a donation from the Arts Council, a support group of Laguna Art Museum.

Families enjoyed a fun-filled day of hands-on art projects led by members of LOCA, face painting, refreshments, the Art Detective game, and more.

Musical performances took place every hour by musicians from local schools including the El Morro and Top of the World Honors Choir, The St. Mary's Drumline from St. Mary's K-8 in Aliso Viejo, and the Laguna Beach High School Strings and Teen Strings.

The hands-on art projects focused on upcycling, which is the practice of taking something that is disposable

and transforming it into something of greater use and value.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who made the event such a success!

The next Imagination Celebration will take place on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Laguna Art Museum. Please save the date and join us for a fun-filled day for you and your family. Admission is free to the public.

May 21, 2011

Laguna Art Museum’s spring event, Palette to Palate, has quickly become one of Orange County's most anticipated art and dining experiences. On May 22, 2010, the work of ten invited artists transformed Laguna Art Museum into a beautiful and unique venue, which also showcased the talents of Chef Craig Strong of Studio at Montage Laguna Beach and the acclaimed wines of HALL Napa Valley. The buzz began early for Palette to Palate, as Riviera Magazine included the event in its coveted list, "Top Ten in 2010." As in years past, the event sold out before the invitations were in the mail. The year 2010 marked the first year that Chef Strong led the culinary team. In addition to doing a superb job preparing the four course dinner on site in the Museum’s galleries, he also donated a private cooking class for six people to the event's live auction. This generated such enthusiastic bidding that Chef Strong graciously agreed to give two cooking classes, which together brought the Museum over ten thousand dollars! Another auction highlight came courtesy of second-year participants DEAN & DELUCA, Napa Valley. Their Director of Wines, Kerrin Laz, flew down for the event and presented two fabulous donations: a private high-end wine tasting for twenty people, and "The Ultimate New York Wine and Food Experience" for six people at DEAN & DELUCA, Soho, including roundtrip airfare for six from first-time sponsor Virgin America. Laguna Art Museum thanks the 2010 participating artists, without whom this event would not have been possible: Kim Abeles, Stephanie Bachiero, Linda Christensen, Ron Dier, Alison Foshee, Tony Marsh, Donnie Molls, Burton Morris, Gifford Myers, and Randall Sexton.

The next Palette to Palate will take place Saturday, May 21, 2011.

September 27, 2011

On September 28, Laguna Art Museum hosted its Annual Members' Meeting where members gathered to hear brief comments about what the Museum had accomplished in 2010 and what is planned for 2011. Presenters included President of the Board of Trustees Robert Hayden III, Director Bolton Colburn, and Business Manager Peter Solomon. At the meeting, Secretary of the Board of Trustees Sara Heeschen, announced that Robert Hayden III had been elected and ratified by ballot to renew his three-year term on the Board of Trustees, and that Marshall G. Eichenauer, Jr. was newly elected to serve a three-year term.

Immediately following the Members’ Meeting, the Museum hosted a tribute to longtime Museum supporter and Bohemian Club founding member Grace Bradley Boyd. In the 1930s and 40s, Grace was a Paramount Pictures film star and married to William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy) from 1937 until the actor’s death in 1972. The Museum was saddened to hear that Grace passed away on September 23, 2010, just before she was to be honored at the Museum during the Annual Members' Meeting. That day was her 97th birthday. Longtime friend Joan Hanson gave a touching tribute to Grace in a room full of attentive Museum members. Following Joan's talk, the Museum sold the book Hopalong Cassidy: An

American Legend, co-written by Grace and screened the documentary Hopalong Cassidy: Public Hero #1, which featured her commentary.

Save the date! The next Annual Members’ Meeting will take place Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Enjoy wine and appetizers, learn about the past year’s accomplishments and future plans for the Museum, and meet and mingle with other Museum members.

On Sunday, October 10, 2010, forty-eight plein air artists from across the country flocked to Laguna Beach to participate in the 12th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational presented by Laguna Art Museum and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. A Paint Out at Treasure Island Park marked the official start of the week, where artists created 8 x 10 inch study paintings for the event’s feature, Trust Your Plein Sight.

Throughout the week, participating artists could be spotted painting along the coast, in the canyon, and on the streets of Laguna Beach. Each artist chose three of these paintings to be sold in the Collectors’ Soirée and Sale on Saturday night.

Kicking off Saturday’s festivities was the Quick Draw, which took place overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the cliffs of Heisler Park under the gaze of hundreds of onlookers. In that event the participating artists had just two hours to complete a work of art. Immediately afterward, the Quick Draw paintings were offered in an exciting silent auction attended by over 300 guests. It was a great opportunity for viewers to purchase one of the paintings that had just moments before been created.

At the Collectors’ Soirée and Sale that evening, collectors and artists mixed and mingled over cocktails, delicious food catered by Las Brisas, and live music courtesy of Sammy Joe Guitarist. Museum Director Bolton Colburn, Board of Trustees Treasurer Marshall Eichenauer, and President of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association Greg Vail announced the following artist awards: Gavin Brooks, the SouthwestArt Quick Draw Award; Bryan Mark Taylor, the Collectors’ Choice Award; and John Burton, the Artists’ Choice Award. In addition, Joan LaRue received the Edward H. Boseker Memorial Award, presented by his widow, Yvonne Boseker, and their daughters, Andrea Boone, Tanya Fletcher, and Susan Gray.

The Invitational culminated with the Public Sale on Sunday, October 17. The sale was free to the public and welcomed over 500 guests who had the opportunity to meet the participating artists and to purchase additional paintings.

Laguna Art Museum would like to thank the sponsors, participating artists, and volunteers who made the 12th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational a success.

Recently, the Laguna Art Museum Store has been featuring works of art by local artists. In late 2010, the store presented an exhibition by 2009 Laguna College of Art and Design graduate Ryan Schroeder titled Still in Space. His watercolor paintings depict still lifes of jars, nails, tools, and skulls. “My current series explores this idea of art as a process of constructing images,” said Shroeder. “By reducing my subject down to little more than forms in space, repeating my use of specific objects, and depicting each object life-sized, the focus of the work becomes the composition of the objects rather than the individual object itself.”

In addition to showcasing the paintings of Ryan Schroeder, the Museum Store partnered with Laguna Canyon-based industrial design and manufacturing company Cerno who had a recent exhibition at Peter Blake Gallery. Six of their LED light displays were on exhibition in the store. The three founders view Cerno as a friendship, a business, and a lifestyle. The dynamic team is comprised of an engineer, a designer, and an artist whose unrelenting passion for innovative design fuels their pursuit to continually create one-of-a-kind furniture and lighting products. Their mission is to fuse quality, performance, and resource efficiency with contemporary design.

Laguna Art Museum is committed to artistically serving the local community and is proud to feature local artists and companies in the Museum Store. Visit the store to find unique, one-of-a-kind items from a variety of our local artists that you can’t buy anywhere else.

The Museum Store is open daily from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. In addition to local artists, the store features a wide range of Permanent Collection giclée reproductions, exhibition catalogues, and special exhibition merchandise such as T-shirts, signed books, and postcards.

Museum members always receive 10% off in the Museum Store. Access our store online at www.LagunaArtMuseum.org/Shop.

Janet Blake, Curator of Collections

In the past year, Laguna Art Museum has received several gifts and promised gifts for the Permanent Collection and made two purchases for the Collection. The gifts include two paintings by Frank Cuprien, fifteen works on paper by Tony DeLap, and ten serigraphs by Florence Arnold. The purchases include an early painting by Oskar Fischinger and a painting by contemporary artist Jeremy Fish.

Bruno and Frances Lambert gifted the Museum two beautiful landscapes by Frank Cuprien. The paintings are rare in that Cuprien’s oeuvre was almost entirely devoted to seascapes. Both works are oil on canvas board and are signed. One measures 16 x 18 inches; the other 18 x 20 inches. They are excellent additions to the Collection, which has sixteen works by the artist, including The Golden Hour, Laguna Beach, which was purchased in 2009 and graced the cover of our 2009 Collecting California: Selections from Laguna Art Museum exhibition catalogue.

Robert Cugno, Robert Logan, and Media Gallery Enterprises generously donated the Florence Arnold serigraphs. Arnold was included in the 1964 exhibition California Hard-edge Painting, curated by Jules Langsner. The exhibition followed Langsner’s 1959 exhibition, Four Abstract Classicists, which featured the work of John McLaughlin, Lorser Feitelson, Karl Benjamin, and Frederick Hammersley. The hard-edge classicists’ approach to abstract painting stood in stark contrast to the gestural forms of the abstract expressionists, and most of its practitioners lived and worked in California. Arnold (1900–1994) received a BA from UCLA and worked as an art and music teacher in Fullerton, California. At the age of fifty, she enrolled in art classes at Fullerton College and also took classes at Claremont Graduate School. At Claremont she came under the influence of Karl Benjamin, who reinforced her interest in hard-edge painting. She worked in both oil and watercolor, and, in the 1970s, produced a series of serigraphs, nearly all of which are monochromatic. The Museum has five paintings and three prints by Arnold. These new serigraphs are an welcome addition to the Collection. The Museum has excellent holdings of the California hard-edge painters, including works by McLaughlin, Feitelson, Benjamin, Hammersley, and Lundeberg.

In late 2010, the Museum received a promised gift of works by Tony DeLap from Tom and Barbara Peckenpaugh. The gift consists of fifteen works on paper and includes the Paris Suite of six prints, the Hands and Stick suite of seven prints, and two drawings. The Paris Suite was created after that artist’s 1984 sojourn in Paris. The six prints are “interventions,” in that DeLap utilized an historical postcard (a black and white collotype) and added something of his own making to the image. In all except one image, he added a nonobjective object, either a shape or a line—easily recognizable as one of his iconic forms—which he cleanly integrated into the existing image. In Pyramid, he has rather playfully balanced a blue arcing line across the peak. The only exception to the nonobjective additions is in La Grand Roue, a postcard image of the famous transporter bridge at Rouen, which was constructed in 1899, then destroyed during World War II. The postcard depicts the suspended ferry that was pulled underneath the tall bridge. DeLap has superimposed his “floating lady”

One of the challenges for any art museum is storage of its permanent collection. It is especially challenging for a small institution that has limited resources. Laguna Art Museum holds a collection of over 3,000 objects dating from the mid-nineteenth century to present day. Over two hundred works—those designated as having a high value—are stored in the vault located in the lower level of the Museum. Since 2004, the balance of the Collection has been stored in a leased space in Irvine.

By 2010, it became clear that the Museum needed to find a larger facility, one that would be closer to Laguna Beach. Late this spring, the Museum had an opportunity to lease such a facility in Laguna Hills. The space is nearly 5,000 square feet, of which about 4,000 square feet is a large warehouse. The staff gained access to the space in late June, and the preparation and move took place during July.

Exhibition Designer Tim Schwab organized a crew of four men—Aron Briggs, Matt Causey, Kyle Chew, and Robert Harsch—who ably assisted him in preparing the space and handling the move. Interns Sarah Strozza and Amanda deLancellotti assisted both Schwab and Curator of Collections Janet Blake.

The first task was to install security and an Internet line so that Schwab and Blake could connect remotely with the Museum’s computer system through a laptop computer. The next task was to design and build large wooden bins that would hold the paintings. Schwab’s crew built four large sections of wooden bins in varying sizes, creating a total of 147 spaces. All the bins have solid tops that provide additional storage for three-dimensional works and boxes. There are also two long rows of metal storage racks that are used for small paintings and boxes. The crew taped off open floor areas that hold large three-dimensional works and crates. Every shelf, bin, and floor area is identified by a letter and/or number that is entered in the collection database. The space has two small offices and a reception area. One office holds solander boxes and flat files, which house unframed works on paper.

The move was completed in a little more than three weeks. With the exception of a few large sculptures, which needed professional movers and a fork lift, the entire move was handled by Schwab and his crew. Finally, the Museum Store staff—Bret Eagleston, Samantha Willson, and Alex Whalen—moved the book inventory into a designated area in the back of the warehouse.

The curatorial staff is very pleased to have the new space, which allows ease of access to the works. Mike McGee, who curated the John Paul Jones exhibition from the Museum collection, was very impressed at how quickly Blake was able to show him the works in which he was interested for the exhibition.

silhouette in the rigging above the ferry. Peter Frank described the works in a 1989 essay as alluding to the magician.

Form and meaning take on new resonance from the images as DeLap alters them with the introduction of but one single item . . . . DeLap has changed nothing, only added visual spice. The collotype medium integrates these changes seamlessly into the texture of each original image, diminishing the willful sense of DeLap’s intervention. Theses subtle perversions of various architectural structures (and by extension architectural structure in general), then, seem natural here. But, once more, things are not what they seem—and are not otherwise.

In the Hands and Stick suite, DeLap has added a narrow stick to seven different images of hands, either as a pair or as a single hand. In most instances, the stick is floating near the hand, perhaps a wry play on the magician’s stick or magic wand. The prints were made in 1991 and based on photographic images from 1974.

The two drawings in the gift—Drawing for Painting and Drawing for Painting: The Man Who Knows, both from 1982—are rough preparatory sketches for paintings that may or may not have been realized. They read like architectural renderings and reveal the artist’s process in creating his signature, three-dimensional paintings.

In late 2009, the Museum purchased an early work by Oskar Fischinger, made possible through a donation from the GSR Fund Inc. The painting, entitled Criss-Cross, is dated 1939, which makes it the earliest work in the Collection by the artist (see page 6). The Museum has a substantial collection of the noted German-born artist and early California modernist and hopes at some future date to host a retrospective of his work.

In 2010, with funds from the Mark and Hilarie Moore Family Trust, the Museum purchased Everything Is Going to Be OK? by Jeremy Fish, a work that was in the artist’s 2009 Laguna Art Museum exhibition Weathering the Storm. It is one part of a five-section mural that addresses the struggles of contemporary life, especially as it pertains to the United States and its position as a world power. The work is acrylic on wood and measures 30 x 60 inches. It depicts an upside-down umbrella in which two amorphous figures are seated while tossed around by a stormy sea. The umbrella—on which a skull is depicted—is encircled by two pairs of enormous hands. Both the hands and the umbrella are key elements in other works by Fish. In some, the hands and the umbrella are protective and reassuring. In others, such as this, the umbrella is upended and tossed about, and the hands are reaching outward. Grace Kook-Anderson described the hands in Everything Is Going to Be OK? as “the hands of greed that have sunk the economy and threaten the welfare of the two figures who, in spite of the horrendous storm, sit patiently waiting it out.” Fish, who was born in Albany, New York in 1974, makes his home in the North Beach area of San Francisco. Weathering the Storm, at Laguna Art Museum, was his first museum exhibition.

Laguna Art Museum currently offers a wide variety of education programming year-round for all ages.

TOURSThe Museum offers interactive touring for all grade levels and groups. Schedule a school or group tour of the exhibitions at Laguna Art Museum with a two week advance notice. These tours are led by trained docents and occur between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. A docent is also available for 2:00 p.m. walk-in tours Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday of each week. In March, April, and May of each year, the Museum offers a special tour program for 3rd and 4th grade classes. This interactive tour is connected directly to the local and state history curriculum. The tour consists of a 90-minute program that is divided into two sessions. Session one is spent with an artist in neighboring Heisler Park for a hands-on plein air drawing workshop, while session two is spent in the Museum touring the current exhibition on view. This special program encourages careful observation of art and emphasizes the elements of art and the principles of design.

The Museum is proud to report that during the period of January 2010-November 2010, our Docent Corps led tours for 537 adult visitors, 810 students, and 562 3rd and 4th grade students for our annual 3rd and 4th grade tour program during March, April, and May of 2010.

DOCENT CORPSThe Laguna Art Museum Docent Corps serve as ambassadors to the arts by providing interactive tours for visitors and school groups. Docents seek to engage Museum visitors through discussion about the art in the rotating exhibitions. The Docent Corps is a highly trained group dedicated to working with the community to increase its understanding of the visual arts.

The Docent Corps provisional class takes place at the Museum each January for a three to four-month period. Training sessions are one morning per week, with an introductory session about the philosophy and expectations of becoming a Laguna Art Museum docent. Provisional Docent Corps are instructed in a variety of subjects including: the elements of art, historical context, looking at and talking about art, engaging visitors, touring with children and adults, and more!

PROGRAMMED EVENTS In conjunction with our exhibitions, the Museum offers many informative, interactive, and educational lectures and workshops throughout the year. Lectures are free to members and free to nonmembers with paid Museum admission. Please check our website periodically for lectures, workshops, and hands-on art activities being offered.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

DOCEN T OFTHE Y EAR 2010

SPOTLIGHT ON

On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, the Laguna Art Museum Docent

Corps and staff members gathered for a beautiful luncheon at Madison Square & Garden Café, hosted by Jon Madison and organized by 2009-2010 Docent of the Year Maureen Somodi and Education Curator Jacqueline Bunge. The group

came together to celebrate the Museum’s volunteer docents and

to announce the 2010-2011 Docent of the Year, Tracy Young. Young joined

the Museum in January 2009 as a provisional docent. Soon after, she joined the Advisory Circle, the Historical Art Council, and the Contemporary Collectors Council.

“Everyone I’ve met at the Museum and at their many events and programs has been a true delight,” said Young. “I love the dedication the Museum has to the art world and the community, bringing them the best of a broad range of subjects that are both thought-provoking and inspiring. I am blessed to live in Laguna and experience Laguna Art Museum’s commitment to the community. I love the touring methodology of the Docent Corps. I feel it is unique and brings an elevated level of awareness to all that are lucky enough to experience it first hand. I’ve seen the excited faces of children during a tour and the nature of what interactive touring can deliver. This is the case for adults as well. I’ve often heard from the people I’ve toured how much richer their experience and broader their perspective was with a docent to guide them. I am continually amazed at the dedication and ability of our docents and often humbled by them all. They are the richest fabric of diversity, and through their sharing and training, challenge each to be the best we can be. The real assets are our curators, who give us so much of themselves and their knowledge. It is truly an amazing organization and one I am honored to be a part of.”

Congratulations Tracy! The Museum is so thankful to have volunteers like you and all of our Docent Corps members as a part of the Laguna Art Museum community.

MUSEUMIN T ERN

SPOTLIGHT ON

Alex Vekich interned at Laguna Art Museum from Fall 2009 through Summer 2010. The staff

members at Laguna Art Museum wish her much success in the future!

Laguna Art Museum: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Alex: When I was growing up I would sit in my parent’s living room and draw with my giant box of crayons for hours.

My parents wanted to encourage my artistic inspirations (they say that’s what

I called my doodles of singing flowers and smiling rainbows and butterflies), and

would take me to all the surrounding museums. That’s where I fell in love with art. I loved the

whole idea of museums; the white rooms filled with colorful paintings, the practice of standing quietly in front a piece and looking thoughtful, and the end where I pointed out my favorite pieces and explained in depth why. Later when I went off to college at UC Berkeley, I decided I wanted to major in something that I loved, and instead of following the footsteps of my science-centric family, I decided to study Art History. After graduating, I needed to find a practical use of my degree (an idea that never crossed my mind when I decided to pursue this field). I moved back to Orange County and started my internship at Laguna Art Museum. That’s when I fell in love with art and museums all over again.

Laguna Art Museum: How did your internship at Laguna Art Museum get you to where you are today?

Alex: I began my internship at Laguna Art Museum to see if I really wanted to pursue a career in the Museum field. When I started, I was helping out in the curatorial department with the wonderful Grace Kook-Anderson, helping with selecting artists for the OsCene 2010 exhibition. It was a wonderful experience getting to meet artists and looking at their art first-hand. Later on, when I became more aware of how the Museum functioned, I was able to take on more responsibilities and work with each member of the Museum, to figure out where my skills and interests matched best.

Laguna Art Museum: What are you doing now?

Alex: With my internship at Laguna Art Museum, I gained valuable experience in nonprofit management. As a result, I now work at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego in the development department working on fundraising and major events at the organization.

Laguna Art Museum: What was your favorite part about interning at Laguna Art Museum?

Alex: My favorite part about interning at Laguna Art Museum was definitely working with the incredible staff. Every person that works at the Museum is welcoming, and was eager to help me learn and grow during my internship. It was hard to leave the place and people I grew to love!

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIESLaguna Art Museum currently offers unpaid internships for college students and recent college graduates on a semester basis (Fall, Spring, and Summer) in the following departments: Curatorial, Education, Marketing/PR, Membership, Collections, Events, and Development.

YOUNG ARTISTS SOCIETY GALLERYThe Young Artists Society Gallery is a Museum gallery space that features exhibitions of K-12 works of art from Orange County schools. Students in Young Artists Society Gallery exhibitions receive recognition and value for participating in artistic activities and are introduced to the inner-workings of the Museum. This program provides a direct connection between the student artists, their families, and Laguna Art Museum. It also gives students and special education groups the chance to see their work in a museum setting.

In 2010, the Museum’s Young Artists Society Gallery featured three exhibitions in conjunction with Laguna Art Museum’s main exhibitions. The first exhibition, Plaster Friezes of the OC by 3rd grade students from St. Mary’s School in Aliso Viejo, was on display at the same time as OsCene 2010: Contemporary Art and Culture in OC. Next, the Young Artists Society Gallery partnered with the Festival of Arts for Mud Houses and Bird Shacks: Laguna Beach Dwellings Interpreted by Festival of Arts Students. That exhibition was on display at the same time as the Museum’s main exhibition Art Shack. Finally, the art of Megan Hart Jones was displayed in Megan Hart Jones: A Tribute. Megan was the daughter of artist John Paul Jones whose work was on display in the main galleries. A talented young artist, Megan was only twenty years old when she passed away in 1984.

The Museum is delighted to announce that St. Margaret's Episcopal School located in San Juan Capistrano will be exhibiting student work in the Young Artist Society Gallery during the period of February 27-May 15, 2011. St. Margaret's Episcopal School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school serving students in pre-school through 12th grade. There are currently 1,220 students enrolled for the 2010-2011 school year from throughout Orange County. A broad arts program is offered with courses in visual arts, choral and instrumental music, dance, and drama. Students participate in more than seventy art performances and events each year. Any student currently enrolled in 2D studies (photography, drawing, and painting) is likely to be a participant in the upcoming show.

Thank you for your generous contribution that will support innovative exhibitions, education outreach programs, and our extraordinary permanent collection.

Laguna Art Museum recently won the The Orange County Register’s Critic’s Choice Award for Best Museum in Orange County. Richard Chang, art critic for the The Orange County Register said, "Laguna Art Museum is the county's leading museum for California art, and rivals the Orange County Museum of Art in its presentation of contemporary art. Indeed, the Laguna Art Museum has done more in the past couple years to attract a wide variety of visitors to its galleries than any other visual art institution in Orange County." Recent critical acclaim could not be possible without generous financial donations from Museum supporters like you. This crucial support provides funding for the Museum’s core functions: art education programs, the permanent collection of art, and exhibitions.

Your generous donation to the Museum’s Annual Fund will support our annual cycle of quality exhibitions, the building and maintenance of our permanent collection, and our expanding educational outreach programs. Since Laguna Art Museum is a non-profit organization, donations to the Annual Fund are 100% tax-deductible.

Your generous contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250, or more will help us continue our varied mix of exhibitions and the educational programs that accompany them. The Orange County Register recognizes and applauds our success as an important contributor to the arts in Orange County. Pledge your support today. Curtis Mathewson and Julie Padach-Mathewson are Laguna Beach residents

who became Friend Level Members in early 2009. The couple recently

upgraded their membership and joined the Advisory Circle.

Laguna Art Museum: What made you want to join Laguna Art Museum as members?

Julie: Joining the Museum is a great way to be connected to Laguna's history as an artist’s town

and show support for that idea. No matter how much

things change, Laguna will always be "the home of the

artists."

Laguna Art Museum: Why did you decide to upgrade to our Advisory Circle?

Bonnie Changstrom-Simon joined Laguna Art Museum as a member

and volunteer docent in 1980. She was also one of the

founding members of the Bohemian Club.

Over the years, Bonnie has been involved with the Arts Council, Museum Library, I m a g i n a t i o n Celebration, and has generously hosted visiting artists during the

Museum’s annual Plein Air Painting

Invitational.

Julie: We decided to upgrade to the Advisory Circle in order to lend our voice and financial support with the hope of facilitating stimulating exhibits in the future.

Laguna Art Museum: What is your favorite experience or memory here at the Museum?

Julie: Present: Being surrounded by snow paintings at the William Wendt exhibit. Past: Playing and helping in the Museum as a little kid when my mom Gloria worked there.

member after my husband passed away, and I was looking to be involved in something fulfilling. Additionally, my stepdaughter was working towards her MFA in painting, which piqued my interest in art. Without being a docent, I would never have learned so much about art—from traditional painting to contemporary art, including installation art, which is so fascinating. It’s been an incredible opportunity to be surrounded by like-minded women in the docent program and to teach children and the public about the significance of art.

Laguna Art Museum: What are your favorite aspects of the Museum?

Bonnie: I love to see the excitement of children visiting a museum for the first time and experiencing art, and I love being a part of a longstanding, historical institution here in the heart of Laguna Beach.

Laguna Art Museum: Anything else?

Bonnie: We would all love to see more support from the community visiting the Museum and being open-minded to different types of art.

Thank you Bonnie for being such a dedicated docent and longstanding Museum member!

The annual audit of the Museum’s financial statements for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010 has been completed.

This is what happened during the fiscal year:

1. Gifts and grants totaled $391,000, 32% of Museum revenues. The annual fund component totaled $108,000, which

surpassed our goal of $100,000. $36,000 was provided to fund the purchase of additional artwork for the Permanent Collection including Oskar Fischinger’s Criss-Cross.

2. Memberships totaled $223,000, 18% of Museum revenues. While this amount was the same as the prior year, I am pleased to report that the Museum did not suffer the membership declines that have afflicted so many other museums.

3. Income from special events netted $191,000, 15% of Museum revenues. This amount increased $66,000 compared to the prior year.

4. Income from the business improvement district, or hotel assessment, totaled $135,000, 11% of Museum revenues, and it continues to be a significant revenue source for the Museum.

5. Investment income totaled $113,000, 9% of Museum revenues. This amount increased $226,000 compared to the prior year.

6. Total revenues for this fiscal year were $1,237,000. This amount decreased 4% compared to the prior year.

7. Total expenses for this fiscal year were $1,366,000. This amount decreased $512,000 or 38% compared to the prior year. This was accomplished while still

presenting a full slate of three major exhibitions.

8. The Museum ended the fiscal year with a cash balance of $355,000.

9. The Museum’s endowment ended the fiscal year with a balance of $1,220,000. This represents an increase of $69,000 compared to the prior year.

Looking to the future:1. The budget adopted for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011 is a balanced budget.

2. As a part of our strategic planning process, we are putting together a three-year business plan.

3. This November we will be entering year two of the three-year Irvine Foundation Initiative. We received a $102,000 grant in the last fiscal year and will be receiving a $165,000 grant for year two.

4. During July, we relocated the permanent collection to a new off-site storage facility. After deducting costs associated with the relocation, we anticipate saving $12,000 per year as a result of this move.

The past fiscal year has been encouraging, and we look forward to continuing favorable news in the current fiscal year.

BUSINESS MANAGER'S REPORT

Important connections between Laguna Art Museum and its corporate sponsors have flourished for years. These relationships benefit each partner economically, and their associations with the Museum enhance their reputations for supporting arts and culture in Laguna Beach and the surrounding region. The unique potential of these relationships has prompted the Museum to focus on a new Corporate Partners Initiative.

In addition to our longtime corporate supporters, two generous new partners, Tatiana and Jean Gaulin, have joined our efforts to advance the Corporate Partners Initiative by making a leadership gift to help build the program to a new level. We are especially appreciative for their support of this exciting effort!

Through the Corporate Partners Initiative, business supporters will find the investment process simple and the economic and personal benefits rewarding. Annual corporate donations provide significant support for our annual cycle of high-quality art exhibitions; for building and sustaining our permanent collection; for the many educational opportunities for children, schools, and adults; for security and operation of the Museum facility; and for creating and managing major Museum events such as the Annual Art Auction, the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational, and Palette to Palate.

Those corporate donors who make a minimum donation of $2,500 will receive a corporate membership in the Museum’s Advisory Circle, invitations to exclusive events, annual free admission passes, free guided tours, and special listing on the Donor Wall in the Museum lobby. In addition, corporate donors will receive early notice of opportunities to be a lead sponsor of exciting events or exhibitions.

For Corporate Partners who choose to sponsor an exhibition or event, the Museum offers additional outstanding benefits that, depending on the level of support, may include important brand association and high visibility at the Museum and on banners seen from Pacific Coast Highway. Company logos may be featured in the Museum’s marketing channels, including the website, e-newsletters, and on the Donor Wall in the Museum lobby. By establishing a productive business relationship, each Corporate Partner will also contribute to the arts and culture of Orange County by advancing Laguna Art Museum’s mission as a museum of American art with a focus on the art of California.

Laguna Art Museum is sincerely grateful for the support of current and past Corporate Partners and is working hard to expand its alliances through the new Corporate Partners Initiative. With great pleasure we invite you to join the Stewards of the Future Society of Laguna Art Museum by making a planned gift. Stewards of the Future are Museum patrons whose contributions will be respected and recognized for years to come.

The Stewards of the Future Society is a special group of friends who believe in the purpose and values of Laguna Art Museum. Each Society donor establishes an enduring personal legacy by helping ensure that the Museum will thrive long into the future, continuing to promote an understanding of the role of art and artists in American culture through exhibition, collection, education, conservation, research, and scholarship.

The Stewards of the Future Society recognize and honor those who have included the Museum in their estate plans—through a bequest, life insurance, or trust arrangement—or those who have made an outright gift to Laguna Art Museum’s Endowment Fund. Endowment funds are invested in perpetuity, and a portion of the investment income is used to fund Museum programs each year.

One of our greatest aspirations in life is to leave a mark—to make a difference in the community or society concerning endeavors of great importance. Through your care and commitment, you can help ensure that Laguna Art Museum has a secure future and that Museum programs continue to thrive and evolve. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about setting up a bequest, charitable gift annuity, or other kind of estate gift arrangement, we would be pleased to discuss possibilities with you in complete confidence.

Pearl Altman Phillipson was an extraordinary person who made an extraordinary gift.

Sadly, Pearl recently passed away at the age of 98. A retired school teacher, and long-time resident of the area, Pearl was a major supporter of Laguna Art Museum.

An activity of one of her classes, that demonstrates the kind of person and teacher she was, was

reported in the press in November, 1955. Thirty ten-year old children in her class at Aliso Elementary School

Rick Balzer, a member of the Board of Trustees and co-chair of the Historical Art Council, explains why he

joined the Stewards of the Future Society.

“I was raised in Laguna Beach. My family moved here in the late 1940’s and various family members have played an active role in the community since the early 1950s. The tradition of

community service and involvement really began in the early days of Laguna. The early artists and

the Art Association were the heart and soul of the community then. They were active in the development

wrote to a pilot, lying in a coma, whose plane came down off shore in the Laguna area. After six days, the pilot regained consciousness. He couldn’t see, but he thought he heard laughing voices. Gradually the voices cleared into words. It was these childish letters, read aloud by a nurse, that the young pilot heard when he first awoke. Pearl Phillipson had suggested that her students write to him, urging him to get well.

Before passing, Pearl made a simple provision in her will that established a bequest for Laguna Art Museum. Her planned act of philanthropy and generosity did not diminish her resources during her lifetime, and it resulted in a very generous gift to the Museum—a gift of major importance to our future. The Board and Staff of Laguna Art Museum are exceptionally appreciative of her most generous support.

of so many aspects of this community that we all enjoy today. All of us are the beneficiaries of those that came before us. Laguna Art Museum preserves and continues traditions that were begun nearly a century earlier. I can think of no better way to preserve and promote that heritage, than to help secure the future of the Museum. That is why I am so very pleased to have provided for the Museum’s endowment in my estate plan.”

Laguna Art Museum offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Our volunteer program is one of the Museum’s richest resources. The Museum is always searching for enthusiastic volunteers who are interested in working in special events, in administration, the Museum store, and the Museum library.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Volunteers at our special events assist in many areas. These can include working at the registration desk, helping with an art auction, assisting with art handling, selling tickets, assisting artists, and much more. Laguna Art Museum’s special events include the Annual Art Auction, Palette to Palate, the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational, and exhibition openings. It’s always a lively and festive environment and perfect for volunteers who are available to work in the evenings or on weekends.

ADMINISTRATION

Laguna Art Museum is looking for volunteers to assist our administrative staff. Administration volunteer responsibilities are primarily clerical and include filing, assisting with mailings, computer data entry, etc. This volunteer position is ideal for a high school student who needs to fulfill community service hours for graduation.

MUSEUM STORE

Volunteering in the Museum store is a great way to give back to the community. Volunteers have the chance to learn more about the artistic legacy of Laguna Beach, gain valuable retail experience, and develop customer service skills.

MUSEUM LIBRARY

The Laguna Art Museum Library, which houses one of the largest collections of California art books, is looking for computer-literate volunteers to help out on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. This volunteer opportunity is suitable for those interested in California art history, research, and archiving.

THANK YOU!

Laguna Art Museum would like to extend a very special thank you to all of our extraordinary volunteers. We are very fortunate to have your involvement, and we realize that you have done much work and organization to help ensure the success of Laguna Art Museum. Thank you so much for your significant contributions. For more information about Laguna Art Museum’s volunteer program, please visit the Museum’s website at www.LagunaArtMuseum.org.

Christianne Kinder is a senior at Laguna Beach High School as well as the Teen Volunteer Coordinator for the National Charity League. She had

volunteered for numerous events at Laguna Art Museum.

“Christianne has been an outstanding volunteer at Laguna Art Museum, giving countless hours of service at events and openings. She is enthusiastic in all her duties at the Museum. I will miss her smile and willingness to help when she heads for college next year.” ~ Derry Coe, Laguna Art Museum Volunteer Coordinator

Laguna Art Museum: How long have you been volunteering at the Laguna Art Museum?

Christianne: I have been volunteering at Laguna Art Museum for almost five years; however, I have been attending Museum events since

preschool. Some of my art was even exhibited there when I attended Annelies's pre-school and St. Catherine of Siena parish school.

Laguna Art Museum: What is your most memorable experience working as a volunteer at Laguna Art Museum?

Christianne: What comes to mind as memorable is the exhibition In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor. The scene at the Museum totally changed, and many celebrities, including Kate Hudson and Lance Armstrong, were in attendance. Also, the art in Las Vegas Diaspora was definitely magnified and larger than life! Both exhibitions were overflowing with admirers and received rave reviews for months. Laguna Art Museum: How has volunteering impacted your life?

Christianne: Volunteering at Laguna Art Museum has allowed me to channel mAy artistic values and interests. My interaction with artists and other adults has helped me mature socially and intellectually. I have gained valuable knowledge about California art and the exhibition process. Laguna Art Museum has also provided me with leadership opportunities when working with other teen volunteers. I have a positive self-image through volunteering at Laguna Art Museum. I also credit Laguna Art Museum for sparking my interest in art communications and psychology. Ideally, the college I attend will have dynamic art shows and a vibrant art scene. I would like to come back and volunteer as a Laguna Art Museum docent during my college breaks.

Laguna Art Museum would like to thank Christianne for her assistance with numerous events over the years. We are sincerely grateful for her generous contributions, and will miss her next year when she is away at college.
