PUBLISHED MONTHLY NOVEMBER 2014
LAFAYETTE PREPARES FOR EXPANSION!
We have exciting news—Lafayette has been awarded a grant from the Productive Living Board (PLB) to expand
Lafayette Industries North, Inc., in Berkeley, Missouri! This grant, along with funds that will be provided by
Lafayette Industries, will allow us to build a 17,500 foot expansion onto the adjacent lot which was purchased several
years ago. The Expansion will include: 4 new packaging areas; a dedicated high-bay storage warehouse; an expanded
lunch room; 4 new loading/shipping docks; a new employee entrance; and customized drop-off area for our workers.
Detailed design work will take place through January, and we hope to break ground for construction in early Spring,
with completion targeted close to this time next year. When finished, our “new” Lafayette North will be the home to
over 200 deserving workers!
The expanded North facility will be over 40,000 square feet, and Lafayette Industries in total will have over 100,000
sq. feet of modern packaging and warehouse space to serve our customers. The total number of our dedicated and
talented workers will be close to 450, with the total number of Lafayette employees over 500—what a change from 16
when we started in 1976!

NEVER TOO SOON TO START TAX PLANNING By Dick Kallemeier
Even now you can start collecting data and your thoughts in preparation for income tax
time. As your tax information begins to come in keep it in a safe place and find last year’s
return to begin the file.
New this year is the requirement for everyone to report their health insurance coverage
and cost. These costs are reported to you by social security (Medicare), your employer
(private insurance), federal market place (Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance) or a Missouri Medicaid letter. If you
do not have health insurance then an exception must be filed. The exceptions are based on affordability of insurance
considering individual or family income. If an exception does not apply then a shared responsibility penalty may
apply. In some cases there may also be a tax credit for high cost insurance premiums.
We plan to do taxes at Lafayette West on Monday mornings starting in February. Watch this newsletter for
appointment reservation information and any new changes to the tax law when congress reconvenes after the election.
FIRST ANNUAL UGLY SWEATER CONTEST
FOR LAFAYETTE NORTH AND WEST
Left: Two ugly sweater winners from last year – Ellen Weber and Cole Hellman.
Lafayette Industries will hold its second-ever Ugly Sweater contest during December. The idea was originally hatched
in the mind of Judi Hellman, our HR director. We know that everyone has been the recipient of or has purchased what
they believe to be the ugliest sweater ever created in the history of mankind. Now Ugly Sweater contests are very
popular as folks try to get the title of Ugliest Sweater. Once again in December we will have voting for the Ugliest
Sweater among the staff. We will let you know as we get closer to the day when we will have the “fashion show” of
ugliness and when voting will take place. Keep your eyes peeled for the ugly-to-the-bone sweaters, and grab off the
shelf before someone else lays claim to it. Then on the designated day we will let you know it is time to don your
horrible sweater and be the stylin’ Ugly Sweater!!
TIM SITEK BECOMES UNCLE By Tim Sitek (Proud Grandfather)
Far left: Uncle Tim poses with his new nephew
Middle: Grandpa Tim poses with his grandson Right: Mother Christy and Baby Scott checking one another out
Uncle Tim is bursting with pride. Pardon our
barrage of family photos. His nephew arrived early
Sunday morning, October 26th, at 1:43 a.m. at St.
Luke’s Hospital. Christy (Tim’s sister) and Sean Prudence are the proud parents. Scott Michael Prudence came into
this world at a whopping 5 pounds, 4 ounces, measuring 18½” long, but certainly looms as a giant in his Uncle Tim’s
eyes. What a reward! What a gift! What a blessing!

also collected with the group. The people who assisted in collecting donations were Mary Ann Doerr, Curtistean and

SIGMA DELTA LUNCHEON
Fritzi Goodman and Reggie Vanek chat Bev Hanson chats with fellow Sigma Delta member Silent auction items came in a variety of items
The Sigma Delta’s are loyal supporters of Lafayette. Saturday, October 25th they had their annual luncheon with a
silent auction and a roomful of good-looking bakery items. The meal included their famous chicken cacciatore. It was
a great time to catch up with friends we haven’t seen in a long while. For entertainment music was provided by the
Gershwin Girls from Manchester Church. They regaled us with tunes from Motown and Gershwin. As always, they
were terrific. It was then time to bid on the items given. Several folks at the table from Lafayette were deep into
bidding on the things they were interested in, several others had purchased baked goods. There was even hand-made
lotion. Thank you to Bev Hanson and her crew for their usual fine job of making sure everyone had a good time.
** IMPORTANT!!: This is NOT Lafayette’s Christmas Party! St. John’s Church organizes
and pays for it. Reservations are limited to the first 60 responders. Again – THIS IS NOT

IDENTIFICATION IS IMPORTANT: Recently we had an event where someone without a reservation showed up.
The problem was the person had nothing other than a phone number on them, and they seemed unsure of their current
address. Please note that it is always a very good idea if someone gets confused and is going somewhere to have an
emergency contact name and number on them as well as a valid ID. The ID should contain their name and current
address. This way, if we need to find a way for them to get home, we have good information to go on instead of a
guess. This type of information is always critical for anyone to carry, in case you are unable to speak for yourself and
no one is with you, at least they will have information of some type on you.
DEEPAK LAKS IS A FIRST-TIME UNCLE! By Meena Laks (Proud Mom)
It is official – Deepak Laks has become Uncle Deepak. On October 8, 2014, at 6:40 a.m. his
sister, Yamini, delivered a baby girl. Her name is Sunvi Eleni Laks Georges.
DO YOU HAVE AN INTERESTING HOBBY?
The Editor has come up with a new idea – we are only working part of the time. The rest of the time we are busy at
home with other activities or out and about. It’s those “other activities” that we’re interested in. If you think you have
an interesting hobby, then we would like to hear about it. Take a picture of yourself actually involved in the activity,
and then have someone you know write up a small article for you. Give them to Becky S. at the front desk or email
them to [email protected]. We look forward to seeing what types of things keep you all busy away
from Lafayette. Remember – no gross hobbies allowed!

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to
know WHY I look this way. I’ve traveled a long way and some of the roads
weren’t paved. The older we get the fewer things seem worth waiting in line
for.

SCOTT ROYAL VISITS THE FEDERAL RESERVE By Erika Royal (Proud Mom)
Scott Royal and his family went to the Federal Reserve Bank's new museum in St. Louis two weeks after it opened.
He learned all about the monetary system and the power of the consumer. That would include all of us. How we
spend, save and make investment choices every day. How our choices in how we handle our money have an impact
on the economy.
Notice the bags of shredded money in Scott’s hand? They are a product of Lafayette Industries and are given to all
visitors of the Federal Reserve Bank Museum.
After the visit to the museum, Scott chose to have lunch at one of the restaurants at Ball Park Village in St. Louis.
FLU VACCINES GREAT SUCCESS!
Flu season is underway. Some folk have already
had the flu or some other virus and gotten better.
We offered the shots free of charge, and they were
given by the Visiting Nurse Association. 140
shots were given at West, and 50 shots were given
at North. Thank you to everyone who got a shot.
Everyone did great, and hopefully the shots will
protect them from the flu. Seeya next year!! David Dust smiles after his flu shot! Jamie Breeden got it despite reservations about the needle!
NUTRITION TIPS FOR NOVEMBER: 1) Don’t substitute fruit juices for whole fruits.
2) Eat whole, fresh, unprocessed foods.

COLLIN GAGE’S BIG WEEK By Carol Gage (Proud Mom)
Collin Gage and his family traveled to Houston, Texas, on September 25th to
help his Mom and sister, Katie, with the final plans for her wedding on
October 4th. Collin is very happy that Tony Malfer is his new brother-in-
law. While in Texas, Collin was able to visit the Houston Aquarium and also
spent a day on the beach at Galveston. He also got to celebrate his 23rd
birthday with all of his family in Texas! It was a great trip but Collin was
happy to get back to work at Lafayette Industries.

SAM’S CLUB #8182 DIVERSITY DAY By Mary Beckerle
Our October 15th Sam’s Club in Des Peres hosted 6 Lafayette employees to an extended tour of their facility, ending
with a free pizza and cupcake lunch. Sam’s does this every year to celebrate Diversity Week. This is the 7th year that
Sam’s has done this for Lafayette. We appreciate their partnership!

ROB LIBERA’S 60TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Rob received a special cake for old-timers! Some folks got the joke, others weren’t sure! Most folks got a laugh out of Rob’s antics – moved well for an oldster!
On October 24th we celebrated Rob’s 60 years of life on this earth. His birthday was on the 25th, which was a
Saturday, so we celebrated on the 24th. We helped him get around by presenting him with his own decorated walker -
should he need to use it. He seemed to do pretty well getting around without it, but he went visiting everyone anyway.
He went out on the floor to say hello to everybody, and most people just started laughing as soon as they saw him and
the walker.
We appreciate all that Rob does for us as workers. Folks don’t realize how tough his job can be, but he always
seems to handle most things with a smile and a wicked sense of humor. Thanks, Rob, for being a great boss, but also
for giving us a laugh when we need it. We hope you enjoyed your day, and now on to another year.
2014 HALLOWEEN PARTY By Trish Walters (Proud Mom)
Our 2014 Annual Halloween Dinner Dance on Friday, October 24th at Evangelical Free Church was a Blast!
Everyone wore their best Halloween attire and danced the night away to music from Soundsational and John Lipka.
He sure knows the music to play to get this crowd up and moving! Dinner was enjoyed by all, thanks to Callier’s
Deli. Also, thanks to all of the volunteers who helped with signing in, serving dinner, serving soda and more. Enjoy
the pictures above to see all the fun!

MY PUERTO VALLARTA VACATION By Jim Eppel
I looked up the word vacation in Old Webster and I believe this trip was truly a vacation. Vacation: leisure time away
from work devoted to rest or pleasure. My wife and I took a vacation to Puerto Vallarta, devoting the whole week to
just rest and the pleasures of the beautiful scenery. When I was younger, I would not have realized that doing nothing
for a whole week was possible. This vacation was a time to replenish the energy that has been exerted since the last
vacation by eating, sleeping, reading, and just taking in the beauty of the world. Walking the beach at sunrise,
napping and reading by the pool/beach, enjoying different types of cuisines, walking the beach at sunset - that was
truly a vacation.
