2 Austin Peay

Austin Peay State University is a comprehensive, state-assisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in

honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded.

The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 min-utes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville.

Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque down-town Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68

buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architec-ture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while refl ecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning.

The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitnees and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fi tness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single class-room building. The new Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students.

Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The cam-pus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the fi nest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation.

Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in

1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967.Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students

from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries.

Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester.

A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

LADY GOVS SOFTBALL FACILITIES

Cheryl Holt Field became the permanent on-campus home facility for the Austin Peay softball team in the 2000 season, giving the Lady Govs their fi rst true home facility in the program’s 15-year history to that point. Its location at the southwest corner of what was the former football practice fi eld puts it at the center of the APSU intercollegiate on-campus sports facilities, being surrounded by the Dunn Center (basketball/volleyball) and Raymond C. Hand Park (baseball) to the west, Morgan Brothers Soccer Field to the north, the Governors Indoor Tennis Center and Governors Stadium (football) to the east.

Since becoming the home facility, Cheryl Holt Field has seen several upgrades take place. First a free-standing, en-closed, fi eld-level press box was brought in 2001 and lights were added two years later. In 2005, there was an upgrade to the dugouts, as the gray cinderblock was covered with red bricks, more match-ing the university’s main color, while a covered hitting area/storage area building was built behind the right fi eld fence. The structure has two hitting tunnels and can hold up to four simulteanous hitting stations. In 2006, a black hitter’s back-ground was erected in centerfi eld. More upgrades came in 2007, as the original fence backstop was taken down and replaced with a two-part backstop, a bottom that is a solid redbrick base, with the upper part being a nylon-webbing net on a four-pole system. The black hitters’ background, which was behind the original fence in centerfi eld, became the new centerfi eld wall, bring-ing the centerfi eld to a distance of 210 feet, while the left and right fi eld lines remain at 200 feet. Prior to the 2000 season, the Austin Peay softball team

had played at several locations off campus for its home games, but primarily at Edith Pettus Park, just off the northwest side of the main APSU campus.

Lady Govs Field

The Lady Govs softball diamond offi cially became Cheryl Holt Field, April 9, 2011, in dedication ceremonies prior to Austin Peay’s softball doubleheader with Murray State.

Holt, who was Austin Peay’s head volleyball coach for 23 years and has served in the University’s athletics admin-istration since 1997, was Austin Peay’s fi rst softball coach when the program was initiated in 1986. The dedication was part of APSU’s Celebration of Women’s Ath-letics weekend. Holt was joined on the fi eld for the dedication by APSU President Tim Hall along with Women’s in Athletics co-chairs Nancy Howell and Susan Cole, who was a member of the fi rst Lady Govs softball team. Three other 1986 team members, Jane Goodson, Regina Suggs Clark and Ginny Gray Davis, pulled the cords on the centerfi eld tarp to unveil the newly-named fi eld. “This is one of the proudest moments of my life and at the same time one of the most humbling as well,” said Holt, who introduced members of her family. APSU’s assistant athletics director since 2003, Holt acknowledged former

APSU Athletics Director Johnny Miller for hiring her at Austin Peay as well as subsequent athletics directors and university administrators who supported her and the athletics program. Specifi cally, she gave credit to all the former student-athletes who helped make the day possible.

Holt amassed 363 victories as APSU head volleyball coach-most of her victories came in her fi nal 13 years as coach when more emphasis was placed on women’s sports, but in particular, volleyball-and 499 overall Division I victories in 28 years. In 1982, Holt came back to Clarksville and Austin Peay, the school where she attained her master’s after earning her bachelor’s from Ohio in 1969. Holt’s coach-ing career began at Austin Peay during an era when women’s sports coaches were asked to coach multiple sports-she was hired to coach volleyball and wom-en’s tennis in 1982. A four-time OVC Volleyball Coach of the Year, she also served as assistant women’s basketball coach. When Austin Peay initiated the softball program in 1986, the-late Bob Brooks, athletics director at the time, asked Holt to initiate the program. Using mostly stu-dent-athletes from other teams like women’s basketball and volleyball, Holt was able to fi eld a team for the 1986 season, playing their games at city-owned Edith Pettus Park. She coached the team again in 1987.

STEPHANIE PARISSTEPHANIE PARISHEAD COACH

First Season • UT Martin (2004)

A former Ohio Valley Con-ference standout has been named Austin Peay State Uni-versity’s new softball coach.

Stephanie Paris, who was a star second baseman for UT Martin in the early 2000s before becoming a successful high school and college coach, has been hired as Austin Peay’s seventh head coach. She replaces Casey Dickson, whose contract was not renewed in the spring after four seasons.

“Obviously I am super excited about this job,” Paris said. “To be back in middle Tennessee and the opportunity to be a head coach in the conference that I played in is so exciting. I am so ready to get going, get out on the fi eld right now.”

“I think she is going to be a great fi t for us,” APSU As-sistant Athletics Director Cheryl Holt said. “Stephanie is just so positive, brings so much energy to the program-she just has so much passion for the sport. She has proven she can build programs.”

Paris comes to Austin Peay from Colorado State Univer-sity-Pueblo, where she has served as assistant coach since 2007. While at CSU-P, she has helped the ThunderWolves to fi ve 20-plus winning seasons that saw them participate in the post-season conference tourney each season. It also included a No. 4 regional ranking this past season. CSU-P was the 2009 NCAA National Tourney regional runner up in 2009.

Jumping from a Division II assistant position to a Division I head coach is not something that fazes Paris.

“The ball game hasn’t changed from Division I to Division II-it is still the same ball game,” Paris said. “I am just excited to get started and see what kind of talent we have here, incorporate my philosophies and strategies and started a tradition of winning here.”

“Stephanie was ready for the next step,” Holt said. “She literally had experience in doing it all there-from recruiting, paperwork, on-fi eld coaching, strategies...”

Paris is used to building and rebuilding. The Brentwood native took over Ravenwood’s program at its inception in 2005 and led them to a 7-20 record. Ravenwood improved to 19-18 the following season and 33-17 in 2007.

In her short time there, Paris developed 10 all-district se-lections and one all-region product.

“Tennessee has a gigantic pool of talent,” Paris said. “The instate talent should be enough to compete in the confer-ence and the national level. I expect to have some out-of-state kids who might be game changers or top-caliber kids.”

As a player, Paris played two seasons at Jackson State Community College where she was named the 2001 Ten-nessee Junior College Player of the Year and was later in-

ducted into the Jackson State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Paris owned a career .354 batting mark at the school. From there she went to UT Martin where she set records

for stolen bases and stolen-base attempted. She earned honorable mention All-OVC in 2003.

SHANE SHOWALTERSHANE SHOWALTERASSISTANT COACH

First Season • Adams College (1993)

Shane Showalter literally has shifted roles with his coaching protégé.

Showalter, who served as Colorado State-Pueblo’s head coach for the past 11 sea-sons, elected to join new Austin Peay head coach Stepha-nie Paris, whom he mentored for the past fi ve seasons, at APSU. Showalter left CSU-Pueblo as the winningest coach in program history, gaining his 200th ThunderWolves victory in 2011 on his way to more than 225 victories.

Under Showalter’s direction, the CSU-Pueblo program became a consistent contender in the Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, fi nishing second last season-he was named RMAC Coach of the Year. In the past six seasons, CSU-Pueblo qualifi ed for the RMAC Tournament each season, fi nishing second twice (in 2006 and 2007).

He coached an All-American in 2010, two RMAC Players of the Year and the league freshman of the year in 2012. Along the way he mentored eight all-region, 44 all-league and 10 all-conference tournament selections.

In 2009, the program qualifi ed for the NCAA Division II National Tournament berth for the fi rst time in school history. The ThunderWolves earned an at-large bid that season and eventually played its way into the Central Regional Champi-onship game, on the way to earning the program’s fi rst-ever wins in a national tournament game.

Off the fi eld his team’s success also carried into the class-room. While at CSU-Pueblo, the maintained a grade-point average better than 3.4.

Prior to serving as the ThunderWolves’ head coach, Show-alter held the same position at Division III Colorado College, a non-scholarship program in Colorado Springs.

Before arriving at Colorado College, he was an assistant coach at his alma mater Adams State (Alamosa, Colo.) from 1996-98.

Showalter earned both his bachelor’s (Sports and Exer-cise Management) and master’s (Exercise Physiology) at Adams State.

He has a daughter, Maison.
