With This Much Stuff Going Wrong, We MUST Be Doing Something RIGHT!

It’s been an expensive season in the Rutherford household. Two months ago, lightning struck our house: blowing off some shingles, exploding two light fixtures in our attic, and frying $4,500 worth of stuff. One month ago, while Debbie and I were on vacation, burglars broke into our home, stole $5,500 worth of stuff, and left broken glass everywhere. So far this month, both Debbie and I got a nail in a tire, and the one in Debbie’s damaged the sidewall, so we had to replace it… for $300. Then my car blew a head gasket, and it’ll cost about as much to fix it as the car’s worth. The temptation in such a series of unfortunate events is to think, “I must be doing something wrong, and God is punishing me.”

But that’s exactly OPPOSITE of how life goes with God. If I’m suffering the consequences of my own unhealthy choices or behavior, then YES, my misfortune is the result of what I’ve done – or am doing – wrong. But God doesn’t have to punish me, because … I’ve done the job for him! So, unless some significant sin comes immediately to mind – which I would have known I was doing BEFORE

anything started going wrong! – a run of bad luck is often more evidence that I’m doing something RIGHT, rather than wrong. That’s what the book of Job in the Old Testament shows us. According to the story, Job was the most faith-ful, good, and generous guy in his part of the world. Because he’s so

good, Satan attacks him, steals his stuff, kills his kids, and afflicts him with painful running sores all over his body. His plan is to turn Job against God and prove Job loves God ONLY because God has been so good to him. God allows Satan to wreak all that havoc in Job’s life because God knows Job’s faith, hope, and love are genuine and will only grow stronger through adversity. In the end, Satan is proven wrong, and God is right – imagine THAT! – and Job comes out of it stronger – and richer and with more children – than in

the beginning. The point is: when manure happens in our life – and it hap-pens to EVERYONE – it may be Satan doing to us what he did to Job: trying to turn us against God and show we love God only because God has been good to us, with God letting him do it, because he knows we’ll come out winners – leaving Satan the loser. AGAIN! With Job in mind, and much manure plopping around Debbie and me recently, I’m excited, because we must be doing something right to rate that much attention from the Enemy! I’m certainly looking forward to emerging on the other side of all this stinky stuff, but until then, I’m sticking with God and looking forward to letting the manure be the fertilizer that helps me grow deeper in faith, hope, and love. I love you all.

FORMATION: Dawn Wirbel led Noonday Prayer. Based on Philippians 4:19, Tom Rutherford reminded us of God’s promise of provision as we formulate the 2017 budget. INFORMATION: Vestry Ministry Team Reports: None received. Staff Reports: Facility: The Facility Rental Report was emailed separately. Children's Ministry: Children’s Minister Angela Lopez reports: In Children's Church we are wrap-ping up our lessons on the Fruits of the Spirit. Our next series is Diary of a Godly kid: Thanksgiving edition. It is loosely based on the popular book series Diary of a Wimpy Kid. We will be making a few holiday themed crafts as well. Beginning in Advent, Deacon Julie will start leading the preschool-ers in 9:30 children's church. The lessons will remain the same but they will have wiggle time and this will allow us to have more in depth conversations with the older kids that Marci and I will continue teaching. In SHINE we just wrapped up our Riddle Ranger series in which we learned the Bible is all true, God is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient. We had a lesson on the Trinity and our final lesson was that Jesus is fully God and fully man. We played a game were we stuffed 2 kids

into a T shirt labeled Jesus and the kids had to work together to race to a card labeled "God" or "Man" to indicate what characteristic of Jesus I was describing. Our next series is based on the Disney movie How to Train Your Dragon. We will be learning how to train our attitudes. On' 5th Sunday fun day' we will be having ice cream sundaes and watching the movie to wrap up the series. This Wednesday I have an online graduation webcast since I did not participate in the actual ceremony a few weeks ago. The Dean would like to recognize everyone who completed the course. I will also be participating, along with 3,400 other children's ministers, in “Uncharted: Navigating your Children's Ministry into the Future.” It is an 8-hour online conference. I will be receiving signed books from some awesome kids’ ministry leaders as well as $250 in resources. I am sure this be very informative and exciting. Children of the Messiah Preschool: The financial report was emailed separately. Youth Ministry: Youth Minister Janie Walton reports: Due to Orange County Public Schools closing for Hurricane Matthew, West Orange High School and Apopka High School Homecoming Weekends were both rescheduled from the October 7 and 8 to October 13 and 15, and October 21 and 22 respectively. I will try to make at least one of the homecom-ing games. Activate’s Guys’ Day Out is Saturday, October 15. Our Activate guys, along with chaperones Murph Borno and Raul Lopez, are playing laser tag at Extreme Laser Tag in

Ocoee followed by lunch and ice-cream. Our tutoring sessions have changed to the third Sunday of every month beginning in October on Sunday, October 16 at 3 PM in the Youth Room. We have tutors in math, science, foreign languages as well as English and the social sciences. We are always looking for tutors willing to help our teenagers succeed. Activate’s Annual Girls’ Retreat was scheduled to coincide with an OCPS holiday, for Thursday, October 27 to Friday, October 28 but will be rescheduled due to OCPS using October 28 as one of the hurricane make-up days. Activate members are volunteering at the church’s Fall Festival on Saturday, October 29. I am one of the judges for the pie challenge. Messiah Academy: The Financial Report was emailed separately. Director Terri Wetherington reports: Messiah Academy has established a Letter of Credit in the amount of 25,000.00 with Insight Credit Union. This letter of credit is the final requirement for qualifying to receive scholarship funds for special needs student from the Florida Department of Education through the Step Up for Students Program. We have several families looking to move their children into our school pending approval of those funds. Assistant Rector Tracy Dugger reports: Young Adults - The October fellow-ship outing was canceled due to conflicting with Ken Anders’ concert. We will reschedule in November. Social Media- I attempted to run a Facebook ad for our pet blessing as a test to prepare for advertising our Latino Service via Facebook. Facebook

did not allow our ad to run because it contained too much text. I am in communication with Linda White about creating less text based graphics for events we want to promote. Church of the Messiah Facebook page continues to perform well in trend analysis. We have now crossed the threshold of 200 likes. I hope to get enough "likes" to reflect the size of our church. We shall see. Latino Ministry-We have gathered an altar book, lectionary, and one copy of el Himnario. (The Spanish hymnal is out of print) I began a Spanish language Facebook page for the church and will be focusing on promoting it. I will be working on banner design and ordering banners to place outside the Church to promote our service. 2017 Budget: Only one person submitted budget requests to Treasurer Rodger Watson, so he didn’t have enough information to compile a first draft Budget. Tom Rutherford urged everyone to turn in their requests. Rodger will give us a Proposed 2017 Budget at the Novem-ber meeting. Potential Vestry Nominees: Four of our members (Larry Book, Anida Daniel, Paul Robertson, and Dawn Wirbel) retire on January 29, 2017 after the Annual Meeting. Tom Rutherford shared a list of 13 suggestions for Nominees. He will contact each Nominee to give them the expectations for Vestry membership and to invite them to stand for election and to attend the November-January Vestry meetings to see how we operate. The Retiring Vestry members will contact the Nominees to answer any questions they may have and to see if they will consent to be nominated, so that we have a slate of Nominees to share with the Congregation by Sunday January 15, which is two weeks before the Annual

Meeting on January 29. Messiah’s Way: Tom Rutherford will put a list of the folks who volunteered to serve in each area of the parish in the appropriate Vestry member’s box by Sunday October 23. Diocesan Convention Delegates: The Convention is Friday and Saturday January 27-28, 2017 at Trinity Prep in Winter Springs. We need 3 lay delegates and up to 3 Lay Alternate Delegates. Diocesan Canons call for at least one of the Lay Delegates to be a Vestry Member. Lionel Williams served last year and volunteered to serve again. Marci Babione offered herself, if we can’t find enough other folks. Tom Ruther-ford will ask if our delegates from last year (Stacey Beck and Sam Katulic) would like to serve again, and we will elect our delegation at next month’s meeting. Greg Chandler is a new parishioner who came to us from the Episcopal Church of St John the Baptist in Orlando. He’s exploring a call to the priesthood and came to us, because St John the Baptist is without a rector – and probably will be for a year or more -- and their vestry doesn’t feel qualified to work him through the process toward ordination. Greg is ordained in The Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God of the Americas, a historically black Pentecostal denomination, and he currently pastors a small congregation in Orlando, so he will be with us on Sunday afternoons and evenings and other times during the week as we get to know him and explore with him his sense of call. DISCUSSION (to help make a decision next month) – NONE: DECISION (based on the Discus-sion last month): Tom Rutherford & Tracy Dugger estimate it will cost us

Page 6: Ladies You’re Invited...Treasurer Rodger Watson [407-814-0303] Staff Barbara Ellerbe, Preschool Director [407-654-8415] Linda Ellison, Music Minister Angela Lopez, Children’s Minister

about $1,000 this year to launch the Spanish service. Vestry allocated $1,000 from the Disney Matching Funds to cover the start-up costs. We will also put envelopes in the pew racks in November to give the congregation an opportunity to fund this new ministry, and whatever funds come in through those will go toward replenishing the Disney Matching Funds, until the Vestry decides where to apply those. MEETING MINUTES & FINANCIAL REPORT: Minutes from the September meeting: APPROVED. September Financial Report from Treasurer Rodger Watson: APPROVED. Operating Account: The month’s income was $7,265.83 LESS than expenses, thus increasing our year-to-date deficit to $27,973.59 – which sounds bad, until we remember that there have been years when in October we were over $40,000 behind, and yet God provided so that we were in the black by the end of the year. But PLEASE KEEP PRAYING! Building Fund: Net Building Fund income (gifts, fundraising, and facility rental income, less expenses) was $3,314.92 LESS than the $14,709.16 mortgage payment. On top of that, we spent $2,845.45 on Capital Improvements to finish the Parish Hall storage closet. Both of those expenses caused us to deduct $6,160.37 from our Contingency Fund. The Meeting concluded with prayer at 3:41pm. Respectfully submitted, Tom Rutherford, Rector and Acting Clerk

Who We Are: Saving Grace in Uganda (SGU) is an organization that works to rescue street kids in Northern Uganda, specifically Lira. This is an area that was destroyed by Joseph Kony and the LRA rebel soldiers.

What We Do: There are 10 million street children living in the world today, we are trying to make that number a little bit smaller. Our Children’s Village is a place where kids are brought in and put in a home group with other children and a house mom, getting them off the streets, out of slavery and IN SCHOOL with a support system and commu-nity that LOVES them.

WHY This Matters: Poverty is a major factor in Uganda with many of the people living on less than $1 a day. Due to this high rate of poverty many kids end up living on the streets. It is estimat-ed that Uganda has 1.7 million orphans- one of the highest orphan rates worldwide.

In Uganda, street kids are seen as the lowest of the low in society. They are continually ignored, rejected and used. They are often seen as hopeless, thieves, and a nuisance to society.

SGU provides not only schooling but a home and family that teaches kids how to

be members of their communities including chores and “normal” family stuff!

This is one of the girls at SGU. Both her parents died of AIDS and she was “taken in” by a community member

where she was forced into slave labor. Monica was rescued from the streets after running away in hopes for

better opportunities. Jesus knew what he was doing when she ran to Lira and was found by Uncle Fred and SGU.

What I’ll Be Doing: I will be working on the ground in Uganda to build community in both the school and the children’s village. I will be teaching, working as a resource for both teachers and students throughout the primary school K-7th and in trade schools, while also working to disciple students and build them up in Jesus Christ.

How You Can Help ….. PRAYER! First and foremost prayer- praying for the kids, for families, for healing and love and understanding to come to all of them, pray for them to encounter Jesus. Pray that God guides and opens doors to direct me exactly where he wants me and keeps me and my travel and all the work SAFE. Pray about financially supporting this mission. Pray for resources in the form of monetary donations to help support travel and living expenses. Make a check payable to Church of the Messiah, and on the memo line put Laura Cook, Uganda If you care to contact me for more information please call me at: Phone: 321-287-9968 Email: [email protected]

SGU provides a unique experience where the least of these, the lowest in Ugandan society, are able to join a community and a school with children from

the community that they would never have the opportunity to interact with otherwise. SGU is on a

mission to teach the Gospel from the ground up.

Ivan was rescued off the streets after living there for many years. He lived with the street boys and was introduced to drugs and alcohol as a small child. Ivan wanted something better and when he met Uncle Fred and the community at SGU he wanted school more than street life.

SGU provides a community for students so they experience a family including siblings,

chores, and a loving home!

Even though Hurricane Matthew interrupted school and forced us to cancel our fall family night, the preschool is celebrating fall in every classroom. The preschool children, their families and teachers visited Green Meadows Farm on October 13. We had a group of 94 people attend the farm. It was a beautiful day at the farm - riding ponies, milking the cow, and chasing chickens. It is a great way for the children to learn about God’s wonderful creation. At the end of the day we were able to pick pumpkins and have a picnic. During our October staff meeting, the preschool staff was re-certified in CPR. We spent the morning training with a registered nurse on CPR and first aid. We even got our staff children involved in the training. We are ready if an emergency arises. However, we sincerely pray we never use this training. We will end the month with our All Saints Festival on October 31 and November 1. The children dressed in costume and we will have fall games in each of the classrooms. The children will win prizes and treats.

We learned about Jesus and how awesome it is that He is fully God and fully man. As our closing game we paired up 2 children in one shirt that said JESUS on the front and would say things like: He cried He walked on water He had a job and went to

school He healed the sick He had a birthday The children would navigate across the room to the card labeled God or Man, pick it up and return to the other side. It was a lot of fun!

In our lesson Riddle Rangers week 3, this was our opening Riddle:

children’s Ministry By Angela Lopez

This is a picture of the Shine kids working on a drawing of how they would spend a day with Jesus. Some played games, others went on picnics with all their favorite foods. Some played basketball and talked about school.

Proverbs22:6

children’s Ministry

We have 2 awesome new acolytes at 7pm! Caroline Seguin and Nicholas Proctor had a lesson from Father Tom and served together for the first time on October 2. Not only did they look great, they did an awesome job and were congratulated by other children after the service. It was adorable to hear them receiving praise from their peers. We truly have the best kids at Church of the Messiah!

At the risk of sounding redundant, I read two more wonderful books this month: one, Left to Tell, by Immaculee Ilibagiza, was given to me by Teri Jones; and the other, Because of Bethlehem, by Max Lucado, would be a marvelous devotional book for Advent. In addition I watched a documentary that was chilling that Father Tom asked me to review: Agenda #2: Masters Of Deceit. In Left to Tell Immaculee Ilibagiza tells the incredible story of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, and how she and some other Tutsi women survived by hiding out in the tiny bathroom of a sympathetic Hutu pastor. Her story continues as she faces the challenge of making a life for herself after the nightmare is over. The overriding theme is how she struggled with her own emotions of hatred and overcame them by the power of the Holy Spirit, so that she was able truly not only to forgive but to love the very people (some of whom had been close friends) who slaughtered her parents and her brothers. Taking things out of order, I watched Agenda #2: Masters of Deceit: The Issue is Never the Issue. It is primarily political, addressing the true agenda of the left, which is global domination and the extermination of liberty and worship of the one true God. The point is that only God can bring us back from

this abyss, and America must return to Him with all our heart. The good news, as Dr. Jeremiah is now saying, is that God has always given us a revival in our past when things looked the darkest, one of which began with a single man praying weekly by himself for weeks until others gradually joined him, and the movement grew to embrace all of America and Europe. And a similar thing happened in the 1970’s, when the profusion of praise songs first began, one of which Dr. Jeremiah reminded me of: “It only takes a spark to get a fire going, and soon all those around can warm up in its glowing. That’s how it is with God’s love once you experience it: you spread the Word to everyone; you want to pass it on.” Finally, Because of Bethlehem, by Max Lucado, is, in effect, a series of Christmas sermons that illustrate the amazing blessings that we receive because God was willing to become one of us. I particularly like the observation on p. 6: Because of Bethlehem, I have a

Savior in heaven.

Christmas begins what Easter celebrates. The Child in the cradle became the King on the cross.

Book Review by

Helen Farnsworth

The whole book ends with a chapter for meditation for each week in Advent: Week 1: Hope; Week 2: Peace; Week 3: Joy; Week 4: Love, as well as a chapter for Christmas Eve/Christmas Day.
