Historical Note
The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) was founded in 1836 in the United States as a movement ofIrish Catholics in opposition to the growing atmosphere of anti-Catholicism in the United States. TheAOH had the support of women but due to the secretive nature of the original group the women werenot allowed to join and were mostly ignored. The women decided to form their own group. Originallythe "Daughters of Erin," the group was founded in 1894 in Omaha, Nebraska. The name was changed in1906 to the Ladies Auxiliary to the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and again in 1984 to the Ladies AncientOrder of Hibernians (LAOH).
The LAOH mission statement reads "While practicing friendship, unity and Christian charity, we willwork to strengthen our Roman Catholic faith, our country and our communities; and perpetuate thereligion, history, culture and traditions of our Irish heritage." Their constitution outlines the goals ofpromoting not only friendship, unity, and Catholic charity but also assisting the people of Ireland inestablishing an Irish Republic that includes all thirty-two counties. The events, meeting minutes andvarious other items in this collection of the LAOH reflect these values and goals.
Members of LAOH must meet certain qualifications of membership. All LAOH members must bepracticing Roman Catholic women age sixteen or older, Irish by birth or descent, and a mother of anLAOH member or the wife or mother of an AOH member or the mother of a Junior Hibernian. LAOHhas divisions and junior divisions in twenty-seven states across the United States. Each state has a varietyof divisions with division leaders as well as a state board. The state boards report to the national boardwhich oversees all the LAOH divisions.

Scope and Contents
This collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes and convention information from the LAOH.The bulk of the records come from the national office, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York,and Michigan, with lesser amounts from other state divisions. Newspaper clippings and photographsincluded are from all of the aforementioned offices as are awards and other LAOH-related artifacts.Financial records and annual reports are from the central office.

Scope and Contents
This series consists of materials from the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernian's national office and is dividedinto six subseries. Items of interest in this series consist of an LAOH constitution printed in 1919, the LAOHRitual Manual from 1916 and the Odes or a new Ritual Manual from 1909. Included in this series are nationalconstitutions and bylaws, degree work and officer's information, ritual manuals, charter applications, historicalinformation, and blank forms.

Scope and Contents
This subseries consists of copies of degree work manuals, duties of officers and installation of officers'information. The degree manual describes the different degrees attainable by LAOH members and how to goabout obtaining them. The duties of national officers information explains what is expected of the members whohold various LAOH national offices. The installation of officers information describes how to properly installnew officers to the national board of officers.

Scope and Contents
This subseries contains updated ritual manuals. The manuals describe the rituals of LAOH that are to beobserved at conventions, and meetings. They include a seating floor plan, order in which meetings should beconducted, and proper wording of the LAOH mottos for various officers to recite.

Scope and Contents
This subseries consists of records of proceedings from national conventions. LAOH conventions began as one-day events and then turned into three-day affairs. The entire proceedings of conventions, be it one or three daysof meetings, masses, and discussions, were compiled and bound and can be found in this subseries.
