King Deldon Namgyal in the year 1655 constructed this amazing two-storey monastery in the memory of his father. The basic highlight of Shey Gumpa is a two storey high image of the seated Buddha. The image is worked out of copper sheets, gilded with gold, and is the biggest metal statue and the second largest Buddha statue in Ladakh. It also contains sacrificial offerings such as grain, jewels, holy signs and

mantras inside it. The upper storey of the Shey Gompa is decked with a number of beautiful wall paintings.

The walls on both the sides of the image of Buddha, display the 16 Arhats, (worthy ones who have achieved Nirvana); 8 on each side. And the wall behind the statue has the images of Buddha's two chief disciples Sariputra and Maudgalyayana. A large bowl of wax is being placed in front of the image with a central flame that symbolizes purity and divinity. The lower storey of the Shey Monastery of magnificent Ladakh has a large library and is decked with murals of Buddha figures with different hand gestures.

Thiksey Gompa

Thiksey Gompa of Ladakh is situated at a distance of approximately 18 km from the town of Leh. One of the most beautiful monasteries of Ladakh belongs to the Gelukpa Order of Buddhism. Sherab Zangpo of Stod built this monastery for the first time at Stakmo. Later Spon Paldan Sherab, the nephew of Sherab Zangpo, reconstructed the monastery in the year 1430 AD. The new monastery was cited on a hilltop, to the north of Indus River. Thiksey Gompa serves as the residence of approximately eighty monks. The monastery also has a rich collection of numerous valuable artifacts and ancient relics.

Hemis monastery

Hemis monastery is the largest monastic institution in Ladakh that belongs to Drukpa Lineage or the Dragon Order of Mahayana Buddhism, with His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa as the spiritual head. The Hemis Monastery was founded by Ngawang Gyatso, the 1st Taksang Repa in the 17th century. Hemis has more than 200 branch

monasteries in the Himalayas and more than 1,000 monks under its care. It is an important living monument and heritage of the Himalayas and its people.

Diskit Gompa

Also known as Deskit Gompa, the Diskit monastery is the oldest and the largest surviving Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladkah. This monastery occupies a special place in the history of the Tibetan Buddhism and belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, the monastery is a sub Gompa of the Thikse Gompa that runs a school with support from an NGO, called the Tibet Support Group. A popular festival known as Dosmoche or the “Festival of the Scapegoat” is held in the area of the monastery during February which is being attended by a large number of people from Nubra Valley.
