Every day, internal and external factors contribute to the aging process without us realizing it is happening.

Sunlight is the biggest cause of the visible signs of skin aging because UV rays damage our cells every day. The process is gradual, but cumulative damage results in signs of aging including wrinkles and loss of elasticity in our skin.

INTRODUCTION:

Aging is a natural process and it affects us all, starting at the moment we are born. Once our facial bone growth has completed and our skin has stretched to accommodate our adult facial structure, our skin is subjected to continual pulling caused by facial expressions. Our skin also becomes more responsive to hormonal fluctuations as we age. These responses lead to dryer skin that begins to show pigment irregularities due to the decreased rate of cell turnover. Along with these internal changes, external factors including exposure to harmful UV rays leads to signs of aging such as dark spots and wrinkles.

KEY ELEMENTS OF AGING

The aging process occurs because:

» Skins cells are constantly being copied and divided to replace shed cells with new cells

» Over time, daughter cells begin to look different due to cumulative DNA damage from oxidizing sunlight exposure

» Surface cells become dry as UV damage causes the moisture barrier (lipids between cells) depletion and allows water to evaporate

» UV exposure/damage causes harmful free radicals

WHY EXFOLIATION MATTERS

Natural exfoliation, the shedding of surface skin cells, slows as we age. The result is a loose, thick layer of dead skin cells on the surface.

Over time, this layer becomes rough, reflects a dull yellow color we see as aging. This can lead to uneven texture, irregular pigment and early wrinkles. Removing this layer of dead skin cells results in a younger, brighter complexion and helps prevent the appearance of the signs we associate with the aging process.

When cells are removed (natural exfoliation included), it stimulates deeper epidermal layer stem cells to produce new cells. These cells are continually rising to the upper layer due to repeated cell division below that push them up.

The process of exfoliation also has another action down deeper in the dermis. When cells shed they stimulate the fibroblasts to product new collagen to give strength and thickness to the complete skin.

BIOLOGICAL ADVANTAGES OF LACTIC ACID:

I Lactic acid has several important biological advantages in comparison to ingredient alternatives such as Glycolic acid. While both acids have similar effects on skin rejuvenation, Lactic acid utilizes normal enzyme sequences in the process of exfoliation and is less irritating to the skin.

»All cells utilize Lactic acid and its enzyme systems, so there is no toxicity with Lactic acid as there is with Glycolic acid

» Lactic acid is the primary regulator of the immune system. It increases critical T-cell proliferation and increases tumor necrosis factor (TNF) to combat skin cancer formation

» With a longer reaction time, Lactic acid is safer than glycolic acid for skin peeling

» Lactic acid is manufactured commercially by the fermentation of molasses. Glycolic acid is manufactured

by bubbling carbon monoxide through formaldehyde (Cosmetic Dermatology, volume 6, no.7, July 1993)

»Lactic acid use results in a minimal chance of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scars

»There is no need for step increases in Lactic acid peel solution concentration

» Lactic acid is proved to be an effective humectant (it attracts water molecules)

» Lactic acid enhances absorption of other substances (e.g. lanolin, moisturizer and vitamin C)

STATISTICS: epidermal surface cell turnover time is 2-3 weeks in a pre-teen child. Slow turnover time increases to about 8-12 weeks for complete surface cell turnover after age 65.

Maintaining a daily skin care routine that incorporates gentle but thorough skin cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and an antioxidant serum can help restore normal skin and fight signs of aging. Theraderm Skin Renewal System incorporates these products into a simple, four-step process that takes only a few minutes to complete. Using this skin care system twice a day helps with signs of aging while maintaining and restoring healthy, beautiful skin.

The use of L-lactic acid in Theraderm products dates back to 1988 when it was used on aging skin to exfoliate and rejuvenate. The application of Theraderm Fruit Acid (L-Iactic acid) as part of a daily skin care routine exfoliates dry, outer-layers of skin and stimulates the natural growth of new cells.
