As a small cohort of students, they have formed very positive relationships with each other and, despite a couple of scrapes, have turned out to be one of the loveliest, thoughtful, cooperative and pleasant year groups that I have ever, in 35 years of teaching, had the pleasure to work with. They have made their families, school and themselves proud of what they have become and who they will be in the future. Young people get a great deal of bad press these days but I can say, with some conviction, that this group of students are wonderful ambassadors for their generation and will be greatly missed here at Lacon Childe. I sincerely hope that our students look back fondly on their time at our school and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents/carers who have supported their children over the last 5 years but, most of all, to thank our Year 11 students who have, most of the time, made it a real pleasure to come to work. We will share many of these memories together when we all meet again at the School Prom on the 27th June at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club. Head’s lines

It is hard to believe, that those fresh faced youngsters that joined us in September 2014, had

their final Leavers Assembly on Friday afternoon. They had a Physics exam in the morning and

then spent the rest of the day with tutors and staff who have shared the last 5 years with

them. (There is still a German and A-level maths exam this week)

They arrived as one of the smallest year groups to enter Lacon Childe School, 74 of them were predicted to arrive, which over their time with us has grown to 88 students on the back of our good reputation and high standards. They joined us at a really important time in the schools’ journey as we became an academy and formed The Shropshire Gateway Educational Trust in partnership with Cleobury Mortimer, Clee Hill and Stottesdon primary schools.

I hope to see you all on the 22nd August when the results of the GCSEs are available for collection.

When the village school in Hopton Wafers was closed, the school building was sold for development. Thanks to the generosity of Chris Woodward, the proceeds from the sale to the developer have been used to endow a new charity, The Woodward Educational Trust – www.w-e-t.org.uk. The Trust exists to provide educational benefits to the residents of the ecclesiastical parish of Hopton Wafers and to the residents of the other parishes in the Cleobury Mortimer benefice area. The Trustees are inviting applications for grants from pupils at Lacon Childe School. Further information and an application form can be found on the website (www.w-e-t.org.uk) or by contacting me at [email protected]. Best regards Robert J HODGE Trustee and Treasurer

During the Easter holidays, Georgia Turvey (8JAl) was

selected to play for Herefordshire at the under 18s

Inter County Badminton Tournament held over four

days at Nottingham University. Herefordshire finished

25th overall, which was a great result for such a small

county.

The following weekend, Georgia played in the Under

14 Cheshire Open Tournament and won silver in the

singles event and gold in the doubles!

Well done Georgia on these amazing achievements!

Eventers Challenge Finals - Hickstead During the first weekend of half term, our equestrian teams travelled to the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead, one of the premier equestrian venues in the world, for the 2019 Eventers Challenge Championships. Almost every great show jumper, horse and rider, has competed at Hickstead since they first opened their doors in 1960, and this is the second year running that equestrian teams from Lacon Childe (as Shropshire County Champions) had qualified to compete against all the other county champions from across the country. Lacon's 70cm team of Scarlett Bailey, Fern Bayliss, Billy Loughnane and Maisie Walter finished on a team score of 4 faults, finishing in a brilliant 11th place out of 27 teams! Our 1m team of Holly Bailey, Tom Brown, Megan Caine and Ellie Jones did not get placed in the team competition, but Holly, who was also representing Shropshire as an individual, finished in 18th place! Lacon Childe was one of only a handful of state schools to be represented at this event, which reflects just what an outstanding achievement this was. Congratulations to each and every one of you, we are as always extremely proud of you! Mounted Games During half term, Lily Hillhouse in 7C represented Scotland in the U12 Home International GB Mounted Games Team. This was a fierce competition with her team finishing 4th behind the North of England in 1st, South of England in 2nd and Wales in 3rd. Older sister, Jane Hillhouse (8JAl), also represented Scotland as part of the U14 at the same competition. Jane's team finished 4th beating Ireland, but struggling to catch the same three teams who did so well in the U12 competition. Tetrathlon The 2019 Junior Regional Tetrathlon was held at Moreton Morrell on 1-2 June and incorporated International Competitions for Boys and Girls teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and Borders. Tom Brown (9W) was part of the Central England team, who spent the 2 days competing against the best Junior Tetrathletes from across the UK and Eire: a very strong field of 66 boys and 93 girls. Tom’s team finished in an amazing 4th place out of 10, and as an individual Tom was fifth, 6th in the swim, 11th in the run and with a 1400 ride. As a result of his performance Tom has now been selected to ride in the International Team! Well done Tom on this incredible achievement!

For the second round of the Mock Trials 2019, our team faced two other tough teams from the West Midlands; the standard was incredibly high. The competition was held in Wolverhampton Crown Court on the 18th May 2019. The case was based on an assault that occurred outside a fire station between a taxi driver (Andi Manning) and a passenger (Charlie Smith). The passenger was the accused assailant. He supposedly kicked the driver in the hip which knocked the driver to the floor. There were two witnesses who viewed the scene (Mel Grant and Vic Linn) who both gave their opinions on the incident.

Once we arrived we had about half an hour to prepare before our Defence Team entered the courtroom. The trial went really well over all, the verdict in the end was not guilty (the Defence won). The opposing team, Wolverhampton Girls School, were also very well-rehearsed and knew the case well. Their lawyers were thorough and the witnesses knew their evidence well. However, our Defence obviously put up a more persuasive argument! Our second trial was about half an hour later, our Prosecution against the Defence team from King Edwards Shakespeare School. Once again King Edwards were obviously a very talented team, who knew what they were doing. Our Prosecution put up a very convincing case; however the magistrates still had some doubt about the attack and so it was not guilty again.

After all the trials were over, all the schools gathered in the entrance hall and waited to hear the results. King Edwards Shakespeare School won the over-all competition, despite the fact that we had the edge when we went up against a few of their pupils in our second round. Even though we were disappointed, we still thought we did really well seeing as we only had a few weeks to prepare. Some of us hope to go back next year and prove ourselves by winning the second round and getting our revenge!

Our team had changed a little since the first round, so here are our team members:

• Legal Advisor – Amy Smith • Usher – Annie Howells Prosecution • 1st Prosecution Lawyer – Lara Starkey • 2nd Prosecution Lawyer – Maddie Chassar-Hesketh • 1st Prosecution Witness – Annie Howells • 2nd Prosecution Witness – Evie Davies Defence • 1st Defence Lawyer – Billy Auger • 2nd Defence Lawyer – Sian Llewellyn-John • Defendant – Evie Davies • 2nd Defence Witness – Maddie Powell

Magistrates

• Grace Forrester • Martha Howells • Freya Kelly And, once again, one very important person who we couldn’t have competed without ….… Mrs Britton - we cannot thank her enough for all the extra work she put in over the many weeks and months of practices! Her talents and knowledge and speech writing skills are un-ending, she would be brilliant in court! Our team would not have become Worcestershire Champions without her, and we couldn’t have had a better experience. So, thank you Mrs Britton! Not forgetting… Miss Gazard - she helped us practice speeches, gave us advice and was a really great supporter of our team; we couldn’t have done it without her!

And of course…

Gerald - our famous rainbow llama and team mascot that appears in many of our photos on the day, without whom we wouldn’t have had the motivation needed to win. Thank you so much Gerald!
