The present document will explain the basic steps in Prinect Coating Editor 2010. In addi-
tion to explanations you will also find practical examples ho to use Prinect Coating Editor
2010.
What is Prinect Coating Editor 2010?
Prinect Coating Editor 2010 is a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat that lets you create a PDF-based varnish.
Note: Varnish layers are used for finishing printed products, especially in the packaging
industry. Other applications forPrinect Coating Editor 2010are, for example, the creation
of a backing layer for printing on glass or the creation of a second fat black to intensify
the color impression of black.

To run Prinect Coating Editor 2010, click the icon shown to the left or choose in the menu
Plug-Ins -> Prinect -> Coating Editor.

For more information on Prinect Coating Editor 2010, choose in Acrobat: ->Help -> Plug-In Help ->Prinect PDF Toolbox 2010.
General Information
The created varnish lies on top of all other objects of a page. This does not affect the print
order. A white base layer in the PDF lying on the top can be printed first of course.
Note: Mostly only the varnish color is shown as the layer created last in the preview if the
Overprint Preview function is not enabled in Adobe Acrobat. To enable the overprint pre-
view in Adobe Acrobat go to ->Advanced ->Prefernces ->General ->Page display andenable Preview for overprint.

Overview of the user interface and the functions
You see the following window when you launch Prinect Coating Editor 2010.
The user interface comprises the following major sections:

Here you choose the varnish you
can create with New.
Here you can specify the color value
(0-100%) of the varnish.
This is where you set which objectswill be varnished.
Here you restrict automatic varnish-
ing by separation or area coverage.
The area coverage applies to text,
bitmap or graphics only.
Here you enable spreading or chok-
ing of the varnish. You must enter a
minus sign in front of the value for
choking.
Here you specify the pages of the
selected page range to edit.
The status window provides infor-
mation on the varnished objects.

How to automaticallycreate a varnish layer?
With Prinect Coating Editor 2010you can create a varnish eitherautomaticallyormanual-
ly.
Proceed as follows to automaticallycoat a page. Open the PDF to edit in Adobe Acrobat
and launch Prinect Coating Editor 2010:
1. To create a varnish color, click :
2. Type a name for the varnish color in the next window that appears. Choose a color
To better identify a varnish, we chose green to represent it.
3. Make your choice to either coat the entire page or separate objects only inObjects. You can choose the position of the objects to be either inside the Trim-
box, the Mediabox or the Artbox:

When you choose Image, all images will be coated:
3. To spread a varnish, specify a spread value and choose a round or miter line join for
the spreding. To specify choking, type a negative value:
Note: Objects will only be spread or choked, not trapped, i.e. their size is increasedor reduced only.
4. In Page Range you specify whether to create the object for particular or for all
pages.
5. Click Apply to create a varnish.
Click Remove to remove a varnish.

How to manuallycreate a varnish?
To varnish some objects on a page only, you can quickly and easily perform manualvar-
nishing. The settings from Color and Spread are applied to manual varnishing. The set-tings in Objects and Page Range have no effect. Proceed as follows to varnish manu-
ally: Open the PDF to coat in Acrobat and launch Prinect Coating Editor 2010:
1. Mouse click: Click the object with the mouse to immediately coat it:
2. Marquee: All objects fully within the marquee you draw are varnished immediately.
When you press the Alt you while clicking a page or drawing a marquee, the
affected varnish object will be removed, or all varnish objects fully within the mar-
quee you draw are removed.

3. When you press the Alt and Shift keys while you are drawing a marquee, the
exact rectangle defined in the marquee will be coated. In this case, it doesnt matter
which page objects are set.

Application examples
1. Varnish with knocked out address box
Objective: You want to create a varnish containing a knocked out address box.
1. First varnish the entire page:

2. Specify a Color Value of 0% for the varnish color and draw the desired marquee
with the Alt and Shift keys pressed. Mac users press the Control key instead of
the Alt key. The result is an entirely coated page with the address box only
knocked out:

2. Create fat black with the Prinect Coating Editor 2010.
Objective: You want to create a fatter black for a darker (fatter) impression of
black. You can create this black with Prinect Coating Editor 2010.
Task: You want to create fat black for all black objects except the barcode. You
should spread the fat black to prevent flashes.
1. In this case the existing colors in this PDF are grey, black and spotcolor red:

2. Launch Prinect Coating Editor 2010and click New to create a new varnish. Type
a name for the varnish, e.g. fat black. In our example, we chose 100% Magenta as
alternate color for the fat black varnish for a better overview. Of course, you can
also choose another CMYK alternate.
3. Specify a color value of 50% for the varnish when a 50% Cyan underneath the black
is to make the black appear fatter. In a later step, you will map the varnish to Cyan
with the Prinect Spot Color Editor:

4. In Objects, select the objects for which to create a new spot color.
In this case we choose Graphic only. The barcode must not have fat black as
there might be problems with the barcode reader later. Barcode is type graphic
and is built in spotcolor black. Black objects are built in 100% process black.
You can filter objects to be varnished by their color by specifying the Area
Coverage and the Separation.
Set an Area Coverage of 100% to 100% and choose the Black separation
in the popup menu of the Color selection section:

5. Specify a negative value in Spread to prevent flashes in the negative (white) text:
Click Apply.
6.. As result, the black the page -except the barcode- is varnished. You can easily ver-
ify the result in Acrobat by disabling the Overprint Preview (->Edit -> Preferences ->
General Page Display Overprint Preview)

7. Now you can map the spot color fat black to Cyan with the Prinect Spot Color
Editor:
Click Apply.After mapping to Cyan with the Prinect Spot Color Editor the spot color fat black is
mapped to Cyan:

3. Load and save a varnish
To save and load a varnish you created into a new PDF as a template, you can save a var-nish as a separate PDF. To save, click:
You can then save a PDF for the varnish to a specified location in your file system. Click
Save.
You can then load this template into other documents as often as you like and save the
resulting document as a new PDF document. When Prinect Coating Editor 2010has loaded
the varnish, the application issues the following message:
You can move or scale the loaded varnish with the PDF Assistant: Page Position tool of the
Prinect PDF Toolbox 2010.
