Lois Hunter, chair of the department, and Corky Dominguez, teacher and co-director with Mrs. Hunter, were presented a proclamation signed by all five board members for their outstanding contribution to excellence in arts education. The students received individual commendations and had their picture taken with Board Member, Don Knabe. The department was selected as one of the winners for the 2009 American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF). The cast, crew and chaperones of 38 joined the U.S. contingent and performed the critically acclaimed musical, Runaways, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world's largest performing arts festival, in Scotland this summer. The nomination and application processes were extremely competitive. Top high school drama departments across the country were nominated by state, regional and national theater directors as well as uninversity theatre professors. The excellence of LACHSA's Theatre Department was recognized by the AHSTF Board of Advisors comprised of respected theatre professioanls. The Board of Advisors ranks the applications and selects the winner based on the following criteria: most recent bodies of work, honors and awards, technical ability, community involvement, recommendations, the department's philosophy towards training students in theatre and the department's overall educational excellence.
