Pittsburgh KnittingFestival Pittsburgh KnittingFestival Pittsburgh KnittingFestival Pittsburgh KnittingFestival by Amy Gibbons On Friday, February 24th Suzanne and I went to a former JoAnn Fabrics in Greentree. There was a fire in Blawnox which made our arrival a bit close on time. Although the room was large, it was packed with vendors, demonstrators and general public. Our spot was in a corner, beside the hookers and a knit store from Cleveland. After some juggling of the space we set our stuff up and got the "try-it" pillow out for folks. Since these were mostly fiber people the questions were intelligent. Of course the vendors incredible

temptations worked on us too. On Saturday I was joined by Louise and Theresa. Among the really interesting events that took place was a knitting class for men. Suzanne and Sonya had a good chuckle about the intensity of the men as they attempted to cast on. They were taught by a former Steeler, the husband of one of the organizers of the event. Among the people that stopped by to visit, were Virginia and Claire Suplee, Dewi Wong and Dorrie Shore. We all decided that we hope to get to go again next year.

Folk FeFolk FeFolk FeFolk Festivalstivalstivalstival by Amy Gibbons

Members of the Thursday night class tacked our lace to black material to be hung in the Scandinavian Booth at the Folk Festival. Then on May 27, Suzanne and I, operating under the influence of memories of past Folk Festivals, arrived at the Convention Center about 9:30. Oops we were a bit early. We were relaxed and really had a good time. We got the usual "tatting" remarks, and an additional comment from a woman, telling us that she did "that" on the playground at school. When I asked her what country she was from, she said "from here." If anyone else hears about a school where they made bobbin lace on the playground, try to find out the details. We were fairly skeptical. By

about 6:00 we were running out of steam and getting silly. When a spectator said, "You can't do that and watch t.v." I apologized for breaking the rules. I also laughed a bunch in response to questions about how long I was going to continue making the pattern on my pillow, saying that I would be sitting in my casket working on it, or they would cut it off for my shroud. Not so much ghoulish as tired and silly. On Sunday Theresa demonstrated alone, with Dewi and Sonya nearby. I forgot to add that we watched Sonya dancing to some of the music on Saturday evening. It was great to see her having so much fun. We had a very lovely time, and hope to

Our job - to elect a president and treasurer; to talk and plan; and then to have some lunch and learn about felting. With some arm twisting, Theresa agreed to serve another term. We were all surprised when Gretchen said that she might be willing to take on the Treasurer and Membership Chair positions. Joanie became treasurer eight years ago when Margot got sick in England and has done more than her share of the work since. Joanie's life has become very busy with school and work. Gretchen having retired - again - has a bit more

free time, and was willing to take on the responsibility. The paper ballot made the election official and we are most grateful to Gretchen for the future and Joanie for the past. Joanie will remain as Nominations Chair, so if any one wants to take on the Secretary or Vice President's position, please let her know before next April's meeting After the elections and a discussion of the upcoming workshop we adjourned to decorate the Easter Egg Tree.

Her discussion of the hows and whys of felting was informative. It was a fun chance for us to try something different. A picture of Gretchen's felted tree is above. It is of course much smaller than the tree.

On May 19th Debby Beever joined us at The Churchill Borough Building. We can't say enough good things about the new rooms. Debbie talked about Ethnic Laces from Russia, France, Italy and the Czech Republic, while she passed an amazing number of examples around the room. It is much easier to understand the differences between types if lace when you can actually see them in person. . Joanie kindly served as a display stand for several beautiful pieces of black lace. We were all kept busy trying to decide which kind of lace we wanted to make next.

Tracy and Bill came with beautiful goodies from The Lacemaker to share, but had other commitments on Saturday, so our shopping had to all be done on Friday night. Among the advantages of the new rooms is that the parking lot is immediately beside the door which means a shorter trip for all of us. Barb and Theresa worked hard to set everything up and the food was wonderful. Everyone signed a green apron as a going away gift for Betsy. We were pleased to welcome back Anna Marie Fiori. It is so nice to see old friends. A good time was had by all.

Cantu Workshop Cantu Workshop Cantu Workshop Cantu Workshop by Amy Gibbons Saturday morning Debby passed out our instructions and we all began to make Cantu. Again I cannot stress enough how nice the new rooms are. The light is wonderful. Joanie was way ahead of everyone pretty much all weekend. Although we all worked pretty hard, there was the usual laughter. Esther told us a really funny story about her trip to Florida which ended with one of her travelling companions saying that Esther was "rude and snappy." (You know us--everything was rude and snappy after that). When it was time to go to dinner, our convoy got separated and lost. After much frustration and laughter we ended up at the restaurant with the wonderful dessert Debby had been to last time, and we were only an hour late.

The restaurant was a fiasco, with wrong orders, or food not available, screwed up checks and no chocolate for dessert. Our waiter, a kid who called us "girls" kept disappearing. When Esther went to the bathroom she came back with toilet paper for us to feel, because it was so rough. It is a good thing we could laugh. On Sunday while class was going on, Debby came out of the bathroom with a piece of toilet paper for us to feel. It was really funny. We decided that we are all R & S T P C. That is rude and snappy toilet paper connoisseurs Most of us learned from Debby's thorough teaching and were well on our way to understanding and completing the small Cantu pattern which she provided. We hope to have Debby back soon

At Christmas last year many of us received beautiful beaded, knitted mini purses from Theresa Troyan. She has agreed to teach us how to make them. So we will meet again at 7:00 p.m. for four nights in July to visit and hide out from the heat. The supply list is short: 1) a set of 0000 knitting needles; 2) # 8 Perle cotton; 3) a hank or tube of size 11 seed beads; 4) paper and pencil. Please have all beads strung on the Perle cotton before Monday night's class so that we may start right in knitting. Tracy at The Lacemaker has the supplies needed for this class in a kit or separately. A basic knowledge of knitting is required. Please contact Theresa if you are taking the class.

Book Review Book Review Book Review Book Review "The Lacemaker" by Esther Loprieno

Written by Janine Montupet set in 17th century in Alencon, France, the lacemaking capitol of Europe. It is the life story of Gilonne, who manages to survive, thrive and find love and security. It has lots of historical detail about the persecution of Protestants. It is light reading and enjoyable. I was not compelled to finish the book in one sitting. It was interesting that although she learned at five, tied to a chair, she loved lacemaking.

A SUMMER ADVENTUREA SUMMER ADVENTUREA SUMMER ADVENTUREA SUMMER ADVENTURE (Conclusion) by Sonya Hanczar Remember a long time ago we left Sonya tatting on a bench in Russia, waiting to make a call home from the main telephone and telegraph building. I went back to the phone center, tried again, and got through! My parents were surprised and happy to hear me -- they had been out shopping and had just come home. Exactly at the amount of time that I had purchased, the phone went dead. Later that evening, I sent an e-mail from the business center at the Cosmos Hotel. It was more expensive -- but SO much easier. (Later in the week, I was able to find an inexpensive internet cafe -- but there is far less privacy.) On Sunday, the Fourth of July, we had a Fourth of July party at a summer home (dacha) in the suburbs of Moscow. It was owned by one of the lead musicians in the Osipov Orchestra. We had barbecue and wonderful Russian cakes and even my Pillsbury flag cookies survived the trip intact. Everyone had fun. Some played instruments and some sang. We talked about our plans for going home. More of our group were leaving in the next few days. My plane wasn't due to leave until Friday morning and it would be difficult to change flights so I kept wondering who would still be around come Friday. We changed hotels again. The new one -- the Minsk -- was closer to downtown. Work was being done on the water heating system at The Golden Grain Hotel so we no longer had hot water available there. We went on a tour of a folk instrument and folk costume factory. It was very impressive. Finally, I had a chance to go back to Old Arbat Street to look for the lace that the other women

had told me about. The one woman told me that there was a back room in one of the shops with lots of lace in it. I went in and out of all the souvenir shops looking for the back room. I purchased some souvenirs along the way. Then I saw the shop where I had met the women from our group the week before. It was a white shop at a corner with the entrance door facing diagonally to the corner. I found the back room! All of the counters were covered with hand-made fabric items. It was a large room and the walls were all covered from ceiling to counters with all kinds of crochet, knitting, appliques, embroidery, and -- lace! I was happy now -- I had found the back room. I purchased a few items, then slowly headed back to the hotel. Then I saw it. The shop -- the embroidery and lace SHOP -- I went in. The store was filled with nothing but embroidery and lace. There were dresses made with lace; vests made entirely of lace. I was thrilled with all the different varieties available. I was able to head home now, happy that I had found the lace shop. On Friday morning, one of the young fellows from the orchestra, Igor, met me in the lobby of the Minsk Hotel and helped me get to the airport and catch my flight home. A couple from Nevada and an elderly woman from Georgia left later that day. We were the last of our group to leave Moscow. My trip home was smooth, easy, and happily, uneventful.

Just a brief note to express our sympathy to Sonya on the death of her mother June 8th.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her.

PLG would also like to thank her for the story of her travels. It was quite an adventure. We are glad she got home safe.
