Web Page Designer is a browser-based Java Server Page (JSP) development tool. During LABVANTAGE installation, Web Page Designer is automatically deployed to the application server as part of the web application. As an example, the following end-user interface was developed without using any programming resources. it was created by leveraging Web Page Designer to rapidly design and configure a feature-rich interface.

Security in Web Page Designer is another powerful attribute. Administrators can assign roles to toolbar buttons and control access to functionality. roles assigned to individual columns can control who sees and manages different parts of the data. in addition, every page in Web Page Designer honors departmental security, which is a feature that allows administrators to group users by named departments and grant access to particular data based on the departmental assignment.

WEB PAGE DEsiGNEr CoMPoNENTsA Web Page Designer-driven page is composed of three components, Page Type, Element and Layout. Each can be configured and reused independently.

Page TypeA Page Type serves as the “brain”. it defines how a page should look and behave. Also, it contains business logic to draw different elements, and takes advantage of properties to render a page and to drive its functionality. Based on the Page Type, the administrator can create any number of pages, each with a different set of property values. Examples of Page Types are List Page, Form Page, Grid Page and Lookup Page.

ElementAn Element is a property-driven, reusable component that performs database operations and/or renders HTML. it needs to be associated with a Page Type in order to be utilized by a Data-Driven Page. Web Page Designer provides over fifty elements ready for use, each with modifiable properties to fill the administrator’s requirements. A brand-new Element can also be easily created. Examples of Elements are Advanced Search option, Display/Form Field and Toolbar.

LayoutA Layout creates the framework in which a page resides as well as defines a page’s appearance. it determines the overall navigational controls for all pages and establishes the “look and feel” of each page. internally, a Layout is a JSP file with placeholders that contain HTML, which come from a Page Type JSP. Examples of Layouts are: Menu, Lookups, Dialog and Sidebar.

A page in Web Page Designer can be either a Data-Driven Page or a Custom Java Server Page.

DATA-DriVEN PAGE (DDP)A DDP is a property-driven web page created using Web Page Designer. it contains Elements and Layout options, which enable the user to perform database operations and determine the look of the page. The content and appearance of a DDP are based solely on the specified properties, which is why DDPs are truly upgradeable A LABVANTAGE upgrade only modifies the “core” code that determines the low-level functionality of DDPs; it does not affect pre-defined properties. Administrators can, therefore, take advantage of enhancements to page functionality, while keeping their page content intact.

CusToM JAVA sErVEr PAGE (JsP)A custom JSP is created in a text editor. Web Page Designer lets the administrator register a custom JSP and specify its properties according to their particular needs. Custom JSPs support the use of other technologies such as LABVANTAGE tags libraries; services, application programming interfaces (APi), and protocols defined by the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (JEE) platform specifications; and both public LABVANTAGE and custom java classes. This allows the administrator to take full advantage of the rich APis that come with the product. Additionally, a Custom JSPs may be converted into a Page Type.

Property Trees are hierarchies of property-value pairs used by Page Types, Elements, and Layouts. Property Managers allow LABVANTAGE administrators to modify the properties of Pages, Page Types, Elements and Layouts.
