Read the interview with Marion about teachers and questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, or C.

    Interviewer:

The relationship between teachers and students is not always an easy one. Marion, whatcan teachers, and students themselves, do to get the most out of lessons?

Marion:Well, there are a few things to remember. The first rule has to be that all rules can be broken. It's no good having a fixed rule in the classroom if, for example, a student has a relative who isill. A good teacher will learn to judge each situation carefully. If someone hasn't done theirhomework, it's worth stopping for a moment to ask why. There could be any number of reasonsbut it would be a mistake to believe that the student is lazy without asking them to give a reasonfirst. The same is true of bad behavior; anything could have happened the week, the day, oreven the hour before a lesson.

Sometimes teachers are guilty of expecting too much too soon. In a classroom situation, ittakes time to build up a relationship of trust - and this works both ways - people need time to getused to each other. It can be very harmful to move too fast.

There are several things a teacher can do to help develop a healthy working relationship inthe classroom. And here it is useful to have a few rules. For example, asking pupils who puttheir hands up, not those who shout out an answer. This helps pupils to understand that theywill get a positive result if they follow the rules.

Once the class is aware of how things should be done, the teacher should, from time totime, recognize this with praise. Teachers should find out which pupils need this to be done infront of the class and those who prefer a private comment to show that their efforts have beennoticed.

Even one word can make a difference. Think about it; if a teacher says, "Will you read thisplease", they are giving the student a choice. Just changing "please" to "thank you" at the endof the instruction shows the student is expected to do something.

If I could go back to bad behavior for a moment, I think it's important for the teacher tounderstand that, very often, the student who causes trouble instead of working is probablydoesn't understand what's going on. Often all that is needed for the teacher to spend a little timewith that student, making sure he or she knows what to do.

When there are problems, in the classroom, let's say between the teacher and one of thestudents, it is very important that these are not allowed to develop too far. Both sides should tryto understand that the problem is the behavior not the student. So the teacher needs to moveon to something else, and the student needs to think about what has happened and not take it

personally. As far as punishment is concerned, keeping students behind after school is sometimes

necessary. However, as with all punishments, it should be as soon as possible after the offence. This will mean that the next time they meet, the student and the teacher start again with therelationship they had before.

1 According to Marion, a good teacher is one who ...a has fixed rules.b is careful marking homework.c looks at each case individually.

2 Marion says that a trusting relationship...

a needs time.b can be harmful.c happens quickly.

EDUCATION REPORT - 'Summer Work/Travel'Brings Many Students to US

    Source: http://www.unsv.com/voanews/specialenglish/

This week, we answer a question from a student in Odessa, Ukraine. Marushka wants to knowabout a program that lets foreign students work in the United States during their summervacations.

The program is called Summer Work/Travel. The State Department administers it for fulltimecollege or university students who speak English well.

Students come on a J-one exchange visa. They can work for up to four months during theirschool break. They generally work in service jobs in stores, resorts, hotels, restaurants andamusement parks. But summer internships are also permitted.

"Summer" in this case means summer in the student's country. Those from south of the equator come to the United States duringthe northern winter.

Students cannot work as housekeepers in private homes or beinvolved in patient care. And they are supposed to be paid the sameas Americans.

Congress created this popular program under a nineteen sixty-oneAmusement parks areamong the places whereforeign students workduring summer vacations

law, the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act. Lastyear, one hundred fifty thousand students came to the UnitedStates this way. Students can do the Summer Work/Travelprogram more than once.

Sally Lawrence heads the State Department office responsible for the program. She saysstudents should begin to gather information a year before they want to travel.

More than fifty organizations are approved to act as sponsors. Sally Lawrence advises studentsto avoid unapproved groups offering services, and to research a few different sponsors.

Sponsors must confirm the English language ability of students and make sure they arecurrently in school. But sponsors do not all charge the same price for their services.

Another difference: some sponsors arrange employment and housing for students before theyleave home. Others permit students to find their own jobs after they arrive.

Sally Lawrence says the first thing to do is to find the list of sponsors on the Web page forJ visa exchange programs.

The address is a little long, but here it is: exchanges.state.gov/education/jexchanges. Click on

Designated Sponsor List, then choose Summer Work/Travel under Category Description. Formore information about the program, go to the main page and click on Private Sector Programs.

To make it easier, we'll post a link at www.unsv.com. And that's the VOA Special EnglishEducation Report, written by Nancy Steinbach. I'm Steve Ember.
