LAB RULES AND REGULATIONS

A. GENERAL RULES

1. Laboratory class times are at 8.00 am - 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm - 5.00 pm (Monday

Thursday) 8.00 am 12.15 pm and 2.!5 pm 5.00 pm ("riday).2. #lthou$h you may be admitted into a laboratory you are %&T allo'ed to commence 'or

unless authoried to do so by a super*isor+assistant en$ineer.

,. ou MUST wear a safety shoes and proper workshop attire at all times in the

laboratory areas. o/t contact lenses should not be 'orn in a laboratory 'here

haardous chemicals are in use.!. e a'are o/ the sa/ety euipment a*ailable its location and method o/ use i.e. /ire

etin$uishers /ire blanets sa/ety sho'er eye'ash stands telephone chemical

/rom the laboratory assistant en$ineer.!. ;eplace tools in their ori$inal place a/ter use.

5. #l'ays ensure the laboratory is clean and tidy both durin$ and a/ter use.3. #d*ice and assistance must be sou$ht by student be/ore operate machine 'hich they

are not /amiliar.

4. :lease al'ays ensure all electrical tools are s'itch o// be/ore lea*in$ the laboratory.

$. %&AT S&OULD "OU DO %IT& LABORATOR"'S TOOL

1. #ny dama$e to euipment or tools must be reported immediately to the laboratory

assistant en$ineer.

2. %o materials or euipment in the laboratory are to be used 'ithout permission /rom the

laboratory assistant en$ineer.,. Miscellaneous items i.e. hammer spatula spirit le*el etc. can be si$ned out on the day

o/ use and to be returned on the same day.

are carbon dioide etin$uishers in the laboratory and the positions and operation o/

these should be no'n. :oint the etin$uisher at the base o/ the /lames. Aery small

/ires can be put out 'ith a damp to'el by smotherin$. &nly a/ter the sa/ety o/ all is

assured should the matter o/ etin$uishin$ the /ire be considered.

d) Bhen the /ire alarm sounds lea*e the buildin$ immediately. o not stop to collect

personal belon$in$s. o not use the li/ts. hut doors behind you. t return to the buildin$ until you are told that it is sa/e /or you to do

so.

?A. Chemicals

a) ?/ corrosi*e chemicals are spilled on the clothin$ immediate sho'erin$ ('ith

clothin$ on) is the best remedy. a/ety sho'ers are located in each laboratory. ?/

chemicals are spilled on the sin 'ash them o// 'ith lar$e *olumes o/ 'ater.b) ?/ corrosi*e chemicals are spilled on the des dilute them 'ith a lar$e *olume o/

'ater and then neutralie 'ith sodium bicarbonate i/ an acid or dilute acetic acid i/ a

base.c) "or all chemicals please re/er to M /or speci/ic sa/ety procedure o/ the

particular chemicals
