Abstract: Labor Notes (officially titled the Labor Education and ResearchProject) is a media and organizing project for union rank and fileactivists based out of Detroit, Michigan. Best known for their self-titled monthly magazine, Labor Notes also publishes books, hosts a bi-annual conference, and runs organizing workshops and seminars forUnion locals throughout North America. Since 1979 they have servedan important networking and organizing role in the labor community,working to strengthen the labor movement from the bottom up. PartTwo consists primarily of research materials assembled by LaborNotes for use in their magazines and other publications. The topicscovered include both national and international labor issues, andinclude information on the automotive industry, various labor strikes,contract negotiations, concessions, team concept and joint labor-management programs, sexual harassment, and more. Also includedare records from various conferences and workshops prepared by theLabor Notes staff.

History

Labor Notes (officially titled the Labor Education and Research Project) is a media and organizingproject for union rank and file activists based out of Detroit, Michigan. Best known for their self-titledmonthly magazine, Labor Notes also publishes books, hosts a bi-annual conference, and runs organizingworkshops and seminars for Union locals throughout North America. Since 1979 they have servedan important networking and organizing role in the labor community, working to strengthen the labormovement from the bottom up.

Scope and Content

Part 1: Series 1 consists of clippings, flyers, articles, newsletters and other printed material documentingdissident autoworker and steelworker movements in the 1970s and 1980s.

Part 2: Files consist of research materials assembled by Labor Notes for use in their magazines andother publications. The topics covered include both national and international labor issues, and includeinformation on the automotive industry, various labor strikes, contract negotiations, concessions, teamconcept and joint labor-management programs, sexual harassment, and more. Also included are recordsfrom various conferences and workshops prepared by the "Labor Notes" staff.
