Personality disorder is widely recognised as one of the most stigmatising and contentious labels in psychiatry. The label that is given to those we work with will often influence whether they are treated with empathy, care and compassion or suspicion, mistrust and exclusion. Anyone working in the field of mental health will be working with those who have this diagnosis, yet consistently students say that are not prepared for working with the difficulties those given this label experience.
While NICE provides guidelines on how to work effectively with people who are given this diagnosis, Occupational Therapy is barely mentioned. A desire to do the best for those we work with has led to staff questioning whether their core skills are adequate, whether they are ‘good enough’ and whether further training in 3 letter therapies is the only way to be of use.
This study brings together a range of clinical and lived experience to explore the challenges the profession experiences in this area. Through presentations, discussions and workshops delegates will develop their skills in working in this field, increase their awareness of their role and gain insights into ways of developing their competence.
