Lab Scenario

You are an administrator for Contoso, Ltd., assigned to the test lab. Your supervisor wants to investigate various methods of deploying applications on network computers other than performing individual or manual installation. Before deploying applications on network, you begin exploring the capabilities of the Terminal Services role included with Windows Server 2008.

Exercise 1: Installing the Terminal Services Role

Exercise Overview

For Windows Server 2008 to function as a Terminal Server, you must first install the Terminal Services role. In this exercise, you add the role with the Terminal Server role service, enabling the server to provide basic Terminal Services functionality. The main task in this exercise is to install the Terminal Services role on SERVER01.

Task 1: Log on to the NYC-DC1 machine with the user name, Administrator, and the password, Pa$$w0rd. Proceed to the next task.

1. To log on to the NYC-DC1 machine, click the Ctrl-Alt-Delete button.

2. Enter the following:

User name: Administrator

Password: Pa$$w0rd

3. Click the Forward button. You are now connected to the NYC-DC1 machine.

Task 2: Log on to the SERVER01 computer with the user name, Contoso\Student01, and the password, Pa$$w0rd. Proceed to the next task.

1. To log on to the SERVER01 computer, click the Ctrl-Alt-Delete button.

2. Enter the following:

User name: Contoso\Student01

Password: Pa$$w0rd

3. Click the Forward button. You are now connected to the SERVER01 computer.

Task 3: Install the Terminal Services role on SERVER01.

1. On SERVER01, install the Terminal Services role by using Server Manager, with the following information: Role service: Terminal Server

Authentication method for the Terminal Server: Do not require Network Level

Authentication

Licensing mode: Configure Later

Group allowed access to the Terminal Server: Student01

a. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and click Server Manager. Click Continue in the User Account Control message box, and the Server Manager console appears.

b. Select the Roles node, and click Add Roles. The Add Roles Wizard appears, displaying the Before You Begin page.

c. Click Next to continue. The Select Server Roles page appears.

d. Select the Terminal Services role, and click Next. The Introduction to Terminal Services page appears.

e. Click Next to bypass the introductory page. The Select Role Services page appears, as shown in Figure 1.

f. Select the Terminal Server role service, and click Next. The Uninstall and Reinstall Applications for Compatibility page appears.

g. Click Next to continue. The Specify Authentication Method for Terminal Server page appears.

h. Select the Do not require Network Level Authentication option, and click Next. The Specify Licensing Mode page appears.

i. Ensure that the Configure later option is selected, and click Next. The Select User Groups Allowed Access To This Terminal Server page appears.

j. Click Add. The Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box appears.

k. In the Enter the object names to select (examples) box, key Student01, and click OK.

l. Click Next to accept the specified users and groups. The Confirm Installation Selections page appears.

m. Click Install. The wizard installs the role, and the Installation Results page appears.

n. Click Close. An Add Roles Wizard message box appears, prompting you to restart the computer.

2. Restart the computers to complete the installation.

a. Click Yes. The computer restarts.

b. When the logon screen appears, on SERVER01, log on using your Contoso\Student01 account and the password Pa$$w0rd. Server Manager loads and completes the role installation.

c. Click Close to close the Resume Configuration Wizard.

d. Close Server Manager, and leave the computer logged on for the next exercise.

Task 4: You have completed all tasks in this exercise.

1. A successful completion of this exercise results in the installation of the Terminal Services role on SERVER01 by using Server Manager.

2. To proceed to another exercise, click the desired exercise.

Exercise 2: Establishing a Terminal Services Connection

Exercise Overview

In this exercise, you configure the Remote Desktop Connection client, on NYC-DC1, preparing it to connect to the Terminal Server, SERVER01. You also use the Remote Desktop Connection client to initiate a Terminal Services connection to SERVER01. The main tasks in this exercise are configuring the Remote Desktop Connection client and establishing a Terminal Services connection with SERVER01.

Task 1: Configure the Remote Desktop Connection client.

1. On SERVER01, create a Microsoft Notepad document named Lab04.


a. Click Start, and then point to All Programs, click Accessories > Notepad. An Untitled - Notepad window appears.

b. Key Sample text in the Notepad window, and then click File > Save As. The Save As combo box appears.

c. Save the text file to your Documents folder, using the name Lab04.

d. Close the Notepad window.

2. On NYC-DC1, customize the settings of the remote computer by using Remote Desktop Connection, with the following information: Remote desktop size: 640 by 480 pixels

Remote computer sound: Do not play

Local device and resource: Clipboard

Connection speed: LAN (10 Mbps or higher)

a. Click Start, and then point to All Programs, click Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection. The Remote Desktop Connection dialog box appears.

b. Click Options. The dialog box expands, as shown in Figure 2.

c. Click the Display tab.

d. In the Remote desktop size box, use the slider to select a resolution of 640 by 480.

e. Click the Local Resources tab.


f. In the Remote computer sound box, select the Do not play from the drop-down list.

g. In the Local devices and resources box, clear the Printers checkbox, and leave the Clipboard checkbox selected.

h. Click the Experience tab.

i. In the Performance drop-down list, select LAN (10 Mbps or higher).

j. Click the General tab.

k. Leave the Remote Desktop Connection window open for the next exercise.

Task 2: Establish a Terminal Services connection with SERVER01.

1. Connect to the remote computer, SERVER01, with the user name, CONTOSO\Student01, and the password, Pa$$w0rd.

a. On NYC-DC1, in the Remote Desktop Connection client program, on the General tab, key SERVER01 in the Computer text box.

b. In the User name field, key CONTOSO\Student01.

c. Click Connect. A Windows Security dialog box appears.

d. Under the CONTOSO\Student01 user name, key Pa$$w0rd, and click OK. An NYC-DC1 - Remote Desktop window appears.

e. Close the Initial Configuration Tasks window.

2. Using the remote desktop connection window established on SERVER01, modify the Lab04 Notepad document. Save the modified document. a. Click Start, and then point to All Programs, click Accessories > Notepad. A Untitled - Notepad window appears.

b. Click File > Open. The Open combo box appears.

3. Close the SERVER01 - Remote Desktop window.


a. Leave the Lab04 - Notepad window open, and click the Close button in the title bar of the SERVER01 - Remote Desktop window. A Disconnect Terminal Services Session message box appears, asking whether you want to disconnect.

b. Click OK. The RDC client disconnects from Terminal Server.

Exercise 3: Creating an RDP File

Exercise Overview

In this exercise, you use the Remote Desktop Connection client to create an RDP file, which you can use to connect to a specific Terminal Server using a predetermined collection of configuration settings. The main tasks in this exercise are as follows:1. Create an RDP file.

2. Connect to SERVER01 by using the RDP file.

Task 1: Create an RDP file.

1. On NYC-DC1, create an RDP connection file, named SERVER01, on the desktop.

a. Click Start, and then point to All Programs, click Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection. The Remote Desktop Connection dialog box appears.

b. Click Options. The Remote Desktop Connection dialog box expands.

c. In the Connection settings box, click Save As. The Save As combo box appears.

d. Click Browse Folders.

e. In the left pane, click Desktop.

f. In the File name text box, key SERVER01.

g. Click Save. A SERVER01 icon appears on your desktop.


Task 2: Connect to SERVER01 by using the RDP file.

1. Using the Remote Desktop Connection utility (not the RDP file saved to the desktop), change the remote desktop display size to Full Screen and connect to the remote computer, SERVER01.

a. Click the Display tab.

b. In the Remote desktop size box, set the slider to Full Screen.

c. Click Connect. A Remote Desktop Connection message box appears, asking whether you trust the remote connection.

d. Click Connect. The Windows Security dialog box appears.

e. Log on using the password Pa$$w0rd, and click OK. The RDC client connects to the Terminal Server and the desktop appears, with the Notepad window you opened in Exercise 2 still open.

Is the taskbar at the bottom of your screen being Question 4 generated by SERVER01 or NYC-DC1? How can

2. Disconnect from the Terminal Server session.

a. Click the Close button in the connection bar to disconnect from the Terminal Server session.

b. In the Disconnect Terminal Services Session message box, click OK.

3. Connect to the remote computer, SERVER01, by using the SERVER01 RDP file.

a. Double-click the Server-01. A Remote Desktop Connection message box appears, warning you that the publisher of the remote connection cannot be identified.

b. Click Connect, log on using the password Pa$$w0rd, and click OK. The RDC client connects to the Terminal Server.

c. In the remote session window, click Start. Click the arrow button and, on the context menu, click Log Off.

Exercise 4: Configuring RemoteApp Applications

Exercise Overview

In this exercise, you configure your SERVER01 Terminal Server to deploy individual applications using RemoteApp. The main task in this exercise is to add applications to the RemoteApp Programs list.

Task 1: Add applications to the RemoteApp Programs list.

1. Log on to SERVER01 using your Contoso\Student01 account and the password Pa$$w0rd. Add the WordPad application to the RemoteApp Programs list by using TS RemoteApp Manager, with the following information:

Disable the RemoteApp program is available through TS Web Access option

Allow any command-line arguments

a. Log on to SERVER01 using your Contoso\Student01 account and the password Pa$$w0rd. Click Start, and then point to Administrative Tools, click Terminal Services > TS RemoteApp Manager. Click Continue in the User Account Control message box, and the TS RemoteApp Manager console appears, as shown in Figure 4.

b. In the Actions pane, click Add RemoteApp Programs. The RemoteApp Wizard appears.

c. Click Next to bypass the Welcome to the RemoteApp Wizard page. The Choose programs to add to the RemoteApp Programs list page appears.

d. Select the WordPad checkbox, and click Properties. The RemoteApp Properties window for WordPad appears.

e. Clear the RemoteApp program is available through TS Web Access checkbox.

f. Select the Allow any command-line arguments option, and click OK. A RemoteApp Wizard message box appears, warning you that allowing executable files to run with no restrictions on the command line arguments opens the Terminal Server to attack.

g. Click Yes.

h. Click Next. The Review Settings page appears.

i. Click Finish. The WordPad application appears in the RemoteApp Programs list.

2. Add the Server Manager and System Information applications to the RemoteApp Programs list by using TS RemoteApp Manager, with the following information: Disable the RemoteApp program is available through TS Web Access option

In the TS RemoteApp Manager console, there are currently two warning indicators showing in theQuestion 7 Overview area. Will any of these warnings make it impossible to access your RemoteApp applications from NYC-DC1? Explain why or why not.

a. Repeat steps 1b to 1i to add the Server Manager and System Information applications to the RemoteApp Programs list, clearing the RemoteApp program is available through TS Web Access checkbox and leaving the default Do not allow command line arguments setting for each. b. Leave the TS RemoteApp Manager console open for the next exercise.

Task 2: You have completed the task in this exercise.

1. A successful completion of this exercise results in the addition of the WordPad, Server Manager, and System Information applications to the RemoteApp Programs list by using TS RemoteApp Manager.


Exercise 5: Creating and Launching RemoteApp RDP Files

Exercise Overview

In this exercise, you create RDP files that enable clients to access the RemoteApp applications you configured in Exercise 4. After creating the RDP files, you use these RDP files to establish Terminal Server connections from NYC-DC1. The main tasks in this exercise are as follows:1. Create RemoteApp RDP files.

2. Launch RemoteApp RDP files from NYC-DC1.

Task 1: Create RemoteApp RDP files.

1. On SERVER01, create an RDP file for the WordPad and System Information applications by using TS RemoteApp Manager. Save the files in the \\NYC-DC1\Users\Student01\Documents folder. a. In the TS RemoteApp Manager console, in the RemoteApp Programs list, select the WordPad application you added.

b. In the actions pane, select Create .rdp File. The RemoteApp Wizard appears.

Note: You may need to scroll down in the main window in order to view the Remote App Programs list.


c. Click Next to bypass the Welcome to the RemoteApp Wizard page. The Specify Package Settings page appears, as shown in Figure 5.

d. In the Enter the location to save the packages text box, key

\\NYCDC1\Users\Student01\Documents, and then click Next. The Review Settings page appears.

e. Click Finish. The wizard closes, and an RDP file named for the application appears in your Documents folder.

f. Repeat steps 1b to 1e to create an RDP file for the System Information application in your Documents folder.

g. Close the TS RemoteApp Manager console.

2. Log off from SERVER01.

a. Log off of the computer.

Task 2: Launch RemoteApp RDP files from NYC-DC1.

1. Log on to NYC-DC1 with the user name CONTOSO\Student01, and the password, Pa$$w0rd. a. Log on to NYC-DC1 with user name, CONTOSO\Student01, and password, Pa$$w0rd.

2. On NYC-DC1, launch the WordPad and msinfo32 RDP files.


a. Click Start, and then point to All Programs, click Accessories > Windows Explorer. A Windows Explorer window appears, displaying the contents of your Documents folder.

b. In the Documents folder, double-click the WordPad RDP file. A RemoteApp message box appears, warning that the publisher of the remote connection cannot be identified.

Exercise 6: Creating and Running a Windows Installer File

Exercise Overview

In this exercise, you create a Windows Installer (.msi) file that you can use to deploy the RemoteApp application all over the network. You move to NYC-DC1 and launch the Windows Installer file. The main tasks in this exercise are as follows:

1. Create a Windows Installer file.

2. Run the Windows Installer file from NYC-DC1.

Task 1: Create a Windows Installer file.

1. Log on to SERVER01 with the user name, CONTOSO\Student01, and the password, Pa$$w0rd.

a. Log on to SERVER01 with user name, CONTOSO\Student01, and password, Pa$$w0rd.

2. On SERVER01, create a Windows Installer file for the Server Manager RemoteApp program by using TS RemoteApp Manager, with the following information: Location to save the package: \\NYC-DC1\Users\student01\documents

Location of the shortcut icon on the client computer: Start menu folder - Server01 Remote Programs

a. Click Start, and then point to Administrative Tools, click Terminal Services > TS RemoteApp Manager. Click Continue in the User Account Control message box, and the TS RemoteApp Manager console appears.

b. In the TS RemoteApp Manager console, in the RemoteApp Programs list, select the Server Manager application you added in Exercise 4.

Note: you may need to scroll down in the main window in order to view the RemoteApp Programs list.

c. In the actions pane, click Create Window Installer Package. The RemoteApp Wizard appears.

d. Click Next to bypass the Welcome to the RemoteApp Wizard page. The Specify Package Settings page appears.

e. In the Enter the location to save the packages text box, key


\\NYC-DC1\Users\student01\documents, and then click Next. The Configure Distribution Package page appears, as shown in Figure 6.

f. In the Start menu folder text box, key Server01 Remote Programs, and then click Next. The Review Settings page appears.

g. Click Finish. The wizard closes, and a Windows Installer file with the name CompMgmtLauncher appears in your Documents folder.

h. Close the TS RemoteApp Manager console.

3. Log off from SERVER01.

a. Log off from the SERVER01 computer.

Task 2: Run the Windows Installer file from NYC-DC1.

1. Log on to NYC-DC1 with the user name, CONTOSO\Student01, and the password, Pa$$w0rd.

2. On NYC-DC1, run the Windows installer file, CompMgmtLauncher, and open the Server Manager application of SERVER01.

c. If a Open File Security Warning dialog box appears, click Run. A User Account Control dialog box appears.

d. Click Allow.

e. While still on NYC-DC1, click Start, and then click All Programs > Server01 Remote Programs > Server Manager. A RemoteApp message box appears, warning that the publisher of the remote connection cannot be identified.

f. Click Connect. A Windows Security dialog box appears.

g. Log on using your CONTOSO\Student01 account with the password Pa$$w0rd. A Connected to Server01.Contoso.com window appears, containing another User Account Control dialog box.

h. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue. The Server Manager console appears.
