Science is a hands-on laboratory class
Safety is the #1 priority
Rules to follow at all times
Safety Contract to read and sign before laboratory work will begin!
General GuidelinesConduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully.
If you do not understand something ASK!
No student may work in the laboratory without an instructor present.
Never touch any equipment, chemicals, or materials unless instructed to do so.
Work areas should be neat and clean.
Only laboratory work sheets on work area.
Leave books and backpacks at decks.
Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals.
Wash Hands with soap and water before leaving the lab.
clean and wipe dry all work surfaces.
Handle all living organisms in a humane manner.
Always carry knives and sharp objects with tips pointed down and away.
Cut away from your body.
never try to catch a falling sharp object.
ClothingLaboratory goggles must be worn any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used.
No contact lenses on day with labs
Dress for safety- Long hair pulled back, no dangling jewelry, loose or baggy clothing. Shoes must completely cover the foot.
NO sandals allowed.
Be prepared!
Accidents and Injuries
Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc).
INJURY (CUT, BURN, ETC) TO INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY.
IF A CHEMICAL SHOULD SPLASH INTO YOUR EYES OR ON YOUR SKIN, IMMEDIATELY FLUSH WITH RUNNING WATER FROM EYEWASH STATION FOR AT LEAST 20 MINUTES.
HANDLING CHEMICALS
ALL CHEMICALS CONSIDERED DANGEROUS.
DO NOT TOUCH OR SMELL ANY CHEMICALS UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.
NEVER TASTE ANY CHEMICALS!
ONLY TAKE AS MUCH AS YOU NEED. NEVER RETURN UNUSED CHEMICALS TO THEIR ORIGINAL CONTAINERS.
TRANSFER REAGENTS BY HOLDING THE CONTAINER AWAY FROM YOUR BODY.
ACIDS HANDLED WITH EXTREME CARE.
NEVER REMOVE CHEMICALS FROM THE LABORATORY AREA.
Handling glassware
carry glass tubing in vertical position to minimize breakage and injury.
Never hand broken glass.
Place broken glass into the designated glass disposal container.
Lab EquipmentRemove an electrical plug by grasping the plug and not the cord.
Examine glassware before each use. Do not use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware.
Report damaged equipment immediately.
If you do not understand how something works just ask the instructor for help.
Do no immerse hot glassware in cold water; it may shatter.
Heating SubstancesExercise extreme caution when using a gas burner. Keep yourself and clothing a safe distance from the flame at all times.
Do not put any substance into the flame unless specifically instructed.
Never reach over an exposed flame.
light gas burners only when instructed by teacher.
Heating substancesNever leave a lit burner unattended.
Turn off burners or hot plates when they are not being used.
Never point the open end of a test tube being heated at yourself or another.
Never look into a container that is being heated.
When bending glass, allow time for the glass to cool before handling.
3 things students must do before lab:
Pass a Laboratory safety quiz.
Return a signed safety contract.
Complete all pre-laboratory activities as required.
