Emergency What to do

What to do if you are trapped during the fire

Wet and place cloth material around and under the door to prevent smoke from entering

Close all doors possible between you and the fire

Be prepared to signal someone outside, but do not break glass unless absolutely necessary as smoke may be drawn into the suite

Emergency What to do What NOT to do

Earthquake Inside the Building

Place yourself under the nearest sturdy object and hold onto it until the shaking stops and if possible cover your head and neck

If you stand in a doorway, brace yourself against the frame and watch out for a swinging door or other people

Emergency What to do What NOT to do

General Medical Problems

Drowning, Heart attack, Heat stroke,

Sexual assault/Assault

In the event an Lab member or student has a medical problem or injury, try to determine the extent of the problem. If an ambulance is needed, first call (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) and report the situation and location

Assess and ensure scene safety

Assist the victim according to their needs and your capabilities

First aid kits are located in the laboratory

Don’t endanger your life to help another! It only makes things worse

Emergency What to do What NOT to do

Flood

or

water leak

All electrical equipment should be unplugged

Unplug computer and computer-related equipment (Power surges and outages such as those expected will render computer equipment useless and can damage disk drives and memory boards.)

When moving through wet or flooded areas use caution to avoid slipping

Call UC Merced Police Department at (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS)

Never disregard an official evacuation advisory

If you are advised to evacuate, do so immediately

Place as much distance between yourself and the threat. If able to, move away from the sound of gunfire as fast as possible

Move with the flow of evacuating personnel

If inside a building, move to another building

To reduce the risk of inhalation exposure in such an incident, occupants should hold their breath and leave the laboratory immediately

Alert people in immediate area of spill

Put on proper personal protective equipment

Cover spill with paper towels or absorbent pads
