Example:• Introduction:
Explain the background information of the
experiment (eg. the theory involved). Briefly
explain the design of the experiment, and state
your hypothesis.
• Procedure:
Describe the steps used to complete the
experiment. Write in passive sentences. Eg. (Asmall piece of magnesium ribbon was scratched
using spatula).Monday, May 9, 2011 3Lab Report Guidelines F40 CHA

• Results:
State your observations in a manner easy to
understand (eg. table form).
• Discussion:
Discuss about your observations (eg. why there
were bubbles, why the was a ‘pop’ sound, why
the flame was put off, why the solution turned
blue/brown and etc).
Provide balanced chemical equations for all the
reactions.Monday, May 9, 2011 Lab Report Guidelines F40 CHA 4

Do comparisons (eg. if some reactions are vigorous
compared to others, provide explanations).
Compare results with standard observations (refer the
sources from Internet). Discuss the theory from the
internet source. Why theory have reaction? why your own experiment no reaction? Explain your reasons.
Use appropriate words. For eg. ‘ pungent smell ’ not‘smelly smell’. Test for hydrogen - Burns with a
characteristic 'pop‘ . Effervescence - foaming formedas a result of a gas being evolved from a solid or
liquid.Monday, May 9, 2011 Lab Report Guidelines F40 CHA 5
