Ricardo Castro Mata 4th B Lab Practice #6 04-06-15 1.- Why is it advisable to place small gaps between the steel rails of a rail-road? A: It is advisable to place them because when temperature increase, steel expands a little bit and if the rail-roads will be completely joined (no gaps) they will collide. So they put small gaps in order to allow the rail-road to expand and do not collide. 2.- Would you need more space in the gaps in an area of extreme temperatures? Why or why not? A: Affirmative, because in an extreme temperature areas you have extremely hot/cold temperatures. And the expansion of the rails is determined by the temperature, so the higher/lower the temperature the more rail it will expand/shrink. 3.- Why is it advisable to lower the pressure in the tires of your car before going on a long trip? A: Because when you go on a long trip your tire experiences increase in temperature, they are making friction with the road and that cause an increase in temperature therefore an increase in pressure so I think that's why it is advisable to lower the pressure on tires before going on a long trip because if you keep tire pressure normal or closer to the maximum pressure tires will fail.
