How can I use Packet Tracer?

Problem Scenario:

Your students need to learn how to configure a routerEthernet interface and to test connectivity to this

interface from a PC that has been configured toparticipate on the network.

How can you demonstrate this to the whole group?

How can they practice what theyve learned?

How can you test their ability to complete all of thesteps on their own?

The Topology

As a group:

Start with the finishedtopology.

Walk students through thesteps.

Individually:

Students will create thedevices, connect the devices,and configure the devices.

Students will test connectivityfrom the PC to the router.

Create the Devices

1. Click theSelect tool, ifnecessary.

To create a device:

3. Choosea device.

2. Choose adevice type.

4. Click on theworkspace.

You can create multiple instances ofthe same device by holding down theCTRL key.

A Few Tips:

Cancel creating a device by clickingon it again or another tool. Also, theESC key will cancel any action.

Multiple devices can be selected atone time using the select tool anddragging a box around the desired

devices.

Some Tips



The Common Tools bar includes:

Select tool for selecting

Move tool for moving theentire topology

Note tool for adding notesanywhere on the topology

Delete tool for removingdevices and links

Connecting Devices



Smart Connection

1. Click the Selecttool, if necessary.

To connect devices:

3. Choose the SmartConnection icon.

2. Choose theConnection icon.

4. Click on thefirst device.

5. Click on thesecond device.



Port Status

Red indicatesthat the link isdown.

Remember that the default state of arouter interface is shutdown.

Mouse over theconnection to see whichports Packet Tracerselected when makingthe Smart Connection.

Test Connectivity



Testing Connectivity

There are several ways to test connectivity in PacketTracer.

From Realtime mode, students can open a commandprompt from the PC desktop and issue a ping just asthey would in the classroom with real equipment.

From Simulation Mode, students can create asimulation that allows them to open up the packet atdifferent points along the path to view how the device isprocessing the packet.

From Realtime mode, select

Desktop from the tabbed interface.Click the Command Prompt icon toopen a command prompt from thePC.

1. Click theSimple PDU icon.

Event List

The Event Listwindow records (or"captures") whathappens as yourPDU propagates

the network.

The PDU List willshow the PDUinformation.

The Event List canbe filtered to showspecific kinds oftraffic.

Playing the Simulation

Click the AutoCapture/Playbutton to begin the

simulation.

Results

A successful pingwill show a green

check mark.

As the simulationruns, events will beadded to the list.These events showthe packets state

at each step alongthe path.

Common Issues forBeginners

I dont see my PDU!

Check your EventList Filters. If noneare selectedthePDU wont showup!

I see PDUs that I didnt create!

Check your EventList Filters. Beginnersmight want to limittheir list to ICMPonly.

My Pings are unsuccessful.

Check the status of your STPbefore switching to SimulationMode. All switch ports shouldbe green before entering

Simulation Mode.

You may need to Reset thenetwork. But make sure yourdevice configurations aresaved first!

I dont see the Event List window

The Event List can be toggledusing the Event List button.

Where did my topology go????

Windows can be closed and/or docked andundocked using the title bar.

Double click to dock or undock. Once undocked,windows can be moved around in the applicationwindow.

Click the X to close.
