Faculty Profile

Student Profile

The Graduate Certificate in Latin American & Caribbean Studies is intended to a) encourage current and future graduate students todeepen their training in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, b) document and highlight the expertise of current graduate students who are already engagedin a course of study with substantial Latin American & Caribbean content, and c) allow nonmatriculated students who do not have the time or money to pursuea graduate degree to earn a recognized credential demonstrating their expertise in Latin America for the purposes of employment or personal interests.

The Central American & Mexican Studies track recognizes students with a working knowledge of all of Latin America and the Caribbean but also intensivetraining specific to the geographical region running from the U.S. border to Panama.

The Brazilian track recognizes students with a working knowledge of all of Latin America and the Caribbean but also intensive training specific to Brazil.

Graduate students interested in broad training on Latin American & the Caribbean or in a Latin American or Caribbean region other than Central America,Mexico, and Brazil may complete the Certificate without selecting a separate track.

Demand for this program is evidenced by current enrollments in graduate level CLACS coursework by students outside the department. In recent years, students in several departments have inquired with the CLACS about a “graduate minor” or certificate in Latin American & Caribbean Studies. In fact, many graduate students build their expertise by taking courses with Latin American & Caribbean content but never receive any credit or recognition forit. Recent examples include students in Anthropology, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Geography, and Spanish & Portuguese.

Similarly, each year CLACS holds several grant and scholarship competitions for graduate students from across KU whose research focuses on Latin America, including the Tinker Foundation research grants (replaced by College funding in grant offyears), the Stansifer Award, the Oppenheimer Research Grant, theStouse Research Grant, and when CLACS has U.S. Department of Education funding, FLAS fellowships. Combined, these various competitions attract 2030graduate students per year. A graduate certificate would provide these students a clear path and incentive to strengthen their regional expertise.

In addition to students from other programs, master’s students in Latin American Studies sometimes find it necessary to end their studies before completing alldegree requirements. The certificate would provide these students with certification of the competency achieved through a coherent set of regional courses.

CLACS also works closely with the Latin American Graduate Organization (LAGO), an official KU multidisciplinary student group whose goal it is to expandLatin American activities and knowledge across campus.

This certificate would replace the Central America & Mexico and Brazil certificates currently offered by CLACS. Neither has been successful at attractingstudents due to the rare offering of the required 700level research colloquium specific to each region. The new Central American & Mexico and Brazilian tracksof the certificate will not require a regionspecific research colloquium, but only LAA 701 "Interdisciplinary Seminar on Latin American Culture & Problems." general track will also require only LAA 701 in particular. The proposed certificate with the option of 2 tracks will allow for greater flexibility to students andtherefore be more encouraging for enrollment.

Graduate certificates in Latin American & Caribbean Studies are not offered at any university within three hours of Lawrence. NeitherKSU, UMKC, or Wichita State offers one.

Please see the Graduate Certificate ProgramsEligibility and Admissions Criteria policy for information on admission requirements.

The Graduate Certificate in Latin American & Caribbean Studies requires 12 credits completed through 4 courses at the 500level and above. All certificate students must complete:LAA 701 Interdisciplinary Seminar in Latin American Culture and ProblemsStudents must choose, in consultation with an advisor, three additional courses from the department's current approved list of Latin American &Caribbean Studies courses. For the Central American & Mexican Studies Track the 3 courses must have at least 50% content on Central America,Mexico, or both. For the Brazilian Studies Track the 3 courses must have at least 50% content on Brazil.Total Hours

Many KU graduate students specialize in Latin America and the Caribbean but receive no formal recognition for this regional expertise.Other graduate students will be encouraged to take more Latin American and Caribbean content courses when they know they can earn a

certificate with only 4 courses and will also be better candidates for CLACS' Tinker, Stansifer, and Oppenheimer awards. A 3rd category of interested studentsincludes those unable to complete graduate degree programs.

During any given semester, roughly 1015 graduate courses could count as electives. The entire range of courses with 50% LatinAmerican & Caribbean content taught at KU would include a list of over 50 throughout the College and the professional schools. A sample

list of approved courses is attached.

The department requests that the tracks be printed on the transcript. This will ensure that students' areas of specialization are accurately reflected.

Fall 2016 SCHEDULE OF CLASSES All Students: See the online timetable for line numbers that correspond to sections available for undergraduate or graduate credit. Some courses listed here and taught by faculty affiliated with the Center of Latin American Studies do not pertain directly to Latin America so special arrangements need to be made to earn area studies credit. On occasion, and upon approval from the Center and from the instructor, courses not listed below may also count for Latin American area studies credit.

Graduate Students: Any course listed with “Staff” as the instructor is taught by graduate students. You will need to enroll concurrently in a section of LAA 500 so that a professor issues the final grade for these courses and so that you receive graduate credit for them.

What is reality? Realisms in the Latin American Short story. There are few ways to criticize reality more than by escaping it. Realisms in Latin America have been varied, spanning a wide array of options going from social realism to magical realism. During this course we will read short stories of the 20th and 21st centuries in order to understand what does it mean to change what seems to be possible, what seems to be real and what seems to be realistic. Realism is a constructed idea, changing throughout time and culture, and is often challenged by reality itself. Whereas once it could have been unrealistic to see Mexicans or Cubans in space, it has happened. Whereas once it could have been unrealistic to think of a black President of the U.S.A., it has happened. Where to some it seems unrealistic that alternatives to liberal republics and dictatorships can exist, some do. Students will be encouraged to think, through the many ways in which the Latin American short story has reimagined the realistic, of all the ways in which their reality could be constrained by an unfounded notion of realism. Meets with SPAN 463. Taught in Spanish.

MW 11:00-12:15 PM MAL 3092

Not the world we have but the one we need: The Revolution. The oppressive nature of Latin American reality has led to a profuse imagery of revolution around the continent, as authors, both of narrative and film have, for the duration of Latin American history, reflected on the need for change. Many of the figures that are most representative of the continent have been revolutionaries, like Ché Guevara, Villa or Zapata, who have chosen to try and find the world that is needed in the ashes of the world that was received. This course will analyze the different pathways to social justice that have been followed in Latin America through revolutionary movements. We will study film materials that analyze and depict the leaders and the social movements that have aimed to change their world, the reasons for it, and their intended and unintended consequences. Meets with SPAN 560. Taught in Spanish.

LAA 602 Topics in Latin American Area Studies: “Latin Am City in Lit & Film” 29860

TR 12:30-1:45 pm WES 2600

António Luciano Tosta

Iberian and Latin American City in Literature and Film This transnational course will focus on how selected Iberian and Latin American authors and film directors have portrayed the city in their works. Students will discuss novels, poems, short stories and films in which the city plays an important role, either by providing the background scenery for the action, functioning as a symbol (or as a character) or by helping to situate the story historically. Authors will include José Saramago, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Mário de Andrade and Julio Cortázar. The focus of the course is not only on how texts have portrayed cities, but also on how cities can be viewed as texts. Some of the themes discussed will be the (displaced) individual in the city, the relationship between space, class, and ethnicity, the interaction between interior and exterior spaces, the dynamics of private and public spaces, the city as a sublime object, the emergence of modernity, the city and the countryside, and contemporary metropolitan life. Besides the assigned readings and movie showings, students will read critical and theoretical essays by authors such as Walter Benjamin, Michel de Certeau, Jürgen Habermas, Nicolau Sevcenko, Georg Simmel, Michel Foucault, Beatriz Sarlo, Renato Cordeiro Gomes, and Richard Sennett, among others.

Faculty Profile

With the increased demand for quantitative knowledge and need for advanced training in current mathematical methods and techniquesin all STEM fields and beyond, many graduate students outside of the Mathematics Department are interested in obtaining such skills as an addition to theirdegree. Examples include graduate students from the School of Engineering, Economics, Physics, Biology, Geology, and Psychology. Graduate courses at the600 and 700 level and above in applied mathematics fields such as Numerical Methods, Probability and Statistics, Differential Equations, Calculus of Variationsetc. have doubled and tripled in size in the last few years. Many graduate students from the Department of Economics and the School of Engineering arerequired to take two of these courses, but typically end up taking more and would be ideal candidates for such certificate program.

The Department of Mathematics at KU has research strengths in multiple areas of Applied Mathematics research and the successes inteaching graduate courses in these fields as well as the increased demand for those has established KU Math as a leader in the state and locally. Suchcertificate program will place The Department of Mathematics in a unique position to serve and educate graduate students from multiple departments andschools in Applied Mathematics. It will be the first such program among the science departments at KU and among the first in the region Missouri University ofScience and Technology has a Graduate Certificate Program in Applied Mathematics.

The admission requirement for this program is the completion of two MATH graduate courses from the list below with a minimum 3.0 GPA.These courses can then count towards the 12 credits required for the certificate. Current KU graduate students as well as those who

successfully complete the twocourse admission requirement as nondegree seeking students are eligible to apply. For more information on admission to a graduate certificate program at KU, see the policy on Graduate Certificate ProgramsEligibility and Admission Criteria.

The proposed certificate requires the completion of four courses from the following list: MATH 601 Algebraic Coding Theory 3MATH 605 Applied Regression Analysis 3MATH 611 Time Series Analysis 3MATH 630 Actuarial Mathematics 3MATH 647 Applied Partial Differential Equations 3MATH 648 Calculus of Variations and Integral Equations 3MATH 650 Nonlinear Dynamical Systems 3MATH 724 Combinatorial Mathematics 3MATH 725 Graph Theory 3MATH 727 Probability Theory 3or MATH 627 ProbabilityMATH 728 Statistical Theory 3or MATH 628 Mathematical Theory of StatisticsMATH 750 Stochastic Adaptive Control 3MATH 781 Numerical Analysis I 3MATH 782 Numerical Analysis II 3MATH 783 Applied Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations 3MATH 865 Stochastic Processes I 3MATH 866 Stochastic Processes II 3MATH 881 Advanced Numerical Linear Algebra 3MATH 882 Advanced Numerical Differential Equations 3At least two courses must be at the 700 level or above. Courses should be selected in consultation with an advisor.

No new funds will be needed.

There is great demand for Applied Mathematics graduate courses at 600 level or above from various graduate students outside of theMathematics Department. The number of graduate students enrolled in these courses has increased dramatically in the last five years and

we want to provide the opportunity for these students to acquire such specialized knowledge and to receive formal certification of it on their transcripts.

The courses in the list cover the areas of applied mathematics represented in the department numerical analysis, probability andstatistics, dynamical systems and differential equations, etc. There are multiple combinations of these that can be of interest, e.g.

differential equations combined with numerical methods; differential equations and stochastic analysis; probability and statistics combined with numericalmethods etc. The graduate certificate coursework will be designed individually to fit the interests and needs of each graduate student and there is no corecourse suitable to be required for all students. Prerequisites for the graduate courses on the list will always be enforced.
