Last Week

Other than the Governor, Secretary Rosario Marin must have the most important job in Sacramento. The Franchise Tax Board, CAL PERS, etc. etc. adds up to major responsibilities. It was nice to hear some warm feelings from a political appointee. It appears that greater things are in store for her political life.

It was pleasant to have a surprise visit from Poland’s Consul General in Los Angeles and several key medical professors. We may be in for a huge surprise on this subject in the near future.

Looking Ahead

Karen Mikkelsen we wish you God’s speed to your recovery. You are a vital part of our Club and we need you back. You can be real proud of the great job Jennifer did last week in your absence.

David Bland, keep up your outstanding work in bringing in “top notch” speakers. As we come out of the summer holidays, our attendance at Club meetings is growing. Earlier in the year, I stated that the key to new members, member retention and meeting attendance is the quality of our program speakers. David you are on the right track, don’t stop and full steam ahead.

I really like the way our Club’s pre-meeting receptions are developing. In the past we all had our dear long-time friends to chat with in our “niche or click.” But at recent meetings I have observed that we have more floaters. Members seem to feel free to mingle from group to group promoting fellowship and potential business interaction. This has been a long standing issue at LA5 and other Rotary clubs too. I tip my hat and compliment all of you for the significant progress that has been accomplished. THANK YOU.

A closing thought--“It is never too late to be, who you might have been”--George Eliot.

Ed Matveld, President 2006-2007

Executive Director/Founder Alyce Morris Winston opened the doors of The Jeffrey Foundation, while unable to work due to lack of childcare, naming it after her son Jeffrey, in 1972. The tremendous response to Mrs. Winston’s innovative project spurred the rapid expansion of the Foundation’s programs. Over 10,000 families have received therapeutic childcare and parenting programs in

the 35 years of service. Through high-quality programming and support services, the Foundation helps both the child and the family to successfully meet the challenges posed by developmental disabilities, autism, multiple handicaps, poverty, abuse, abandonment and neglect. The Foundation also strives to extend its services to typical children through its programs of inclusion and outreach so that the community may benefit from these additional resources. Some of the special needs children we serve suffer from diseases such as muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, and autism. Others are victims of abuse, crippling accidents, sight, speech, and hearing impediments or in utero drug exposure.

The Jeffrey Foundation strives to improve the quality of life for disabled and at risk individuals and their families through the development of appropriate recreational, educational and social programs in the community, programs like Infant & Toddler, Early Intervention, School Age, and High School, are among some of the programs that the Jeffrey Foundation has to offer. Originally from Wisconsin, she attended Union of Wisconsin in Madison, with social work emphasis. Mrs. Morris Winston is married to Edgar Winston, a Design Consultant and resides in Westchester, California.

Please introduce yourself to Diane and Maureen and make them feel welcome.

Dianne Lee Charles Dunn Real Estate Services Inc. 800 W. Sixth St., Suite 600, Los Angeles, CA 90017 213-270-6207, (fax) 213-607-7807 email: [email protected] Sponsor: Randy Lee

Born and raised in Malaysia Dianne came to America at the age of 17 to attend Indiana State University, in Terre Haute, Indiana. Dianne graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Broadcast News with a minor in journalism.

By 27 she had already been in the TV News business for 9 years, she was a television news reporter both here in LA for the city’s cable station Channel 35 and in Malaysia where 22 million viewers obtained their daily reports from her. Dianne reported in 2 languages, Malaysian and the English Language. While at Channel 35, Dianne covered press conferences with now ex Mayor, Jim Hahn. She also covered the election campaign in 2001 when Mayor Hahn narrowly defeated, now mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. On Sept 12th 2001, the day after the 2 planes crashed into the world trade center, she produced a report covering the city of LA’s emergency services system which is located in a secret underground location. As challenging as the news business is, Dianne decided she needed something that would satisfy her big appetite. She found a greater challenge, to take on the food service industry.

If she looks familiar to you it’s probably because Dianne was a Manager at Daily Grill Downtown. At Daily Grill Dianne managed a team of 30 employees at every shift while taking care of over 300 guests in 2 and a half hours. Prior to Daily Grill Dianne also managed three other restaurants in the Pasadena area.

Recently however, Dianne was recruited by a Regional Real Estate Company. Charles Dunn is a commercial real estate firm and her new challenges include Public Relations, Marketing Development and Recruiting. When Dianne is not working she can be found on the tennis courts. She says her love for tennis can be attributed to her dad’s passion for the game. She is a big fan of Andre Agassi and spent her childhood years watching him play tennis in tights. Dianne speaks 4 languages, Malay, Indonesian, Taiwanese and English and travels to Asia every other year to visit her parents over Chinese New Year.

Maureen was born in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies to William St. John Straw and Fanny Straw. Maureen’s parents traveled extensively for 25 years and had 7 daughters. Maureen learned a lot from both her parents who were very devoted, loving parents who instilled in her, the importance of unity and values, character and integrity.

Maureen graduated from the Queen's school in Jamaica and migrated to Toronto, Canada where she got married and had a son Sheldon. Maureen furthered her education at Ryerson Polytechical Institute where she studied Business Administration and Computer Programming. She later worked for IBM Canada. Maureen moved to Los Angeles where she continued to work for IBM.

Maureen realized at a young age that she was an "Entrepreneur" at heart and wanted to explore her creativity. Maureen opened "Maureen's Boutique" in Santa Monica, a high fashion women's clothing store. Maureen used her artistic ability in designing hand painted fabrics for her many unique creations. After 18 years of owning and operating Maureen's Boutique, Maureen realized that her true love was art and design. Maureen currently invests her efforts in creating unique, modern, contemporary abstract designs using acrylic on canvas and mixed media.

In addition to her work as an Artist, Maureen uses her talents as an Interior Decorator and Color Specialist. She assists her clients with transforming their homes or offices through color and design, furnishings, window treatments and all of their interior decorating needs as well as creating unique custom artwork to compliment their spaces. Maureen is also a 'color specialist to walls' and will create unique color blending techniques to increase or decrease the spaciousness of a room.

DON’T WAIT…BECOME A Paul Harris Fellow TODAY!

Think about a few simple things today. Think about a little girl in Africa sitting in a school and learning to read and write. She is there because two Rotary clubs joined forces and got a matching grant from the Rotary Foundation to build a well and a school. The well means that she doesn’t have to walk miles each day to get dirty water from a swamp. The well also means that her baby brother won’t get sick and die from drinking the dirty water. Think about 200,000 children each year since 1986 who haven’t had Polio because they were vaccinated. Think about how Rotarians and the WHO vaccinated 150,000,000 children in India, in one day. Think about the less than 1,000 children who got Polio last year because of the Rotary Foundation. Think about how we need to finish the job off so that no child anywhere gets Polio ever again.

Think about a little boy in El Salvador who is finally learning to read and write with his new glasses. He couldn’t learn before because he couldn’t see well enough. FUDEM made glasses for him with the support of the Rotary Foundation. Members of LA5 put them on his nose.

Think about a fine young man sponsored by LA5 for an Ambassadorial scholarship and who can now study for a full year anywhere in the world. His expenses paid entirely by the Rotary Foundation. Think about how the Rotary Foundation gets ALL of the money to do these things from Rotarians like you who contribute a small or large amount. Realize that when you contribute, you play a direct part in every project RI supports. Know that when you discuss these projects with friends and clients, they are personal because you support all of them. Now, think about how you can contribute at least $100 to the Rotary Foundation this year. Or, think about how you can contribute $500 this year and, with our club’s matching points, you can become a Paul Harris Fellow. (Offer good as long as the points last) Don’t just think about bringing a check into the next meeting and giving it to one of the Paul Harris Committee members or sending it in to the club office. Don’t just think about it; DO IT. AND as an added bonus; for every $100 you contribute you will get 11 chances at a District wide raffle for some serious prizes AND everyone who contributes at least $100 will have a chance to win one of three incredible BBQ lessons from the king of Texas BBQ and wine drinking, Mike Hainkel. Call Peter Lattey at 310-968-3252 or see the PHF team at the table at any Friday meeting until the end of September for more information.
