Dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Abruzzo Culture

-ABRUZZO HERITAGE- ~ SULMONA (AQ). SATUARIO DI ERCOLE CUR-

INO~

ON THE Morrone massif, which dominates the Peligni valley, there are situated the impressive ru-ins of a sanctuary dedicated to Hercules, one of the best loved divinities of ancient popular religion the monumental sacred area, built between the 2ned and 1st. Centuries B. C. , is characterized by two large terraces connected by a double flight of steps, following a scenographic plan of great ef-

fect. The upper terrace, supported by a polygonal wall, holds a small building decorated inside with beautiful mosaic flooring with a central rosette surrounded by designs of vegetables, waves, dolphins, and crenellated towers. The walls still conserve the plaster painted to imitate panels of marble. At the beginning of the 1st. Century B. C. the whole area was involved in important monumentalizing con-struction operations that gave the sanctuary the architectural layout visible today. On that occasion, apart from the interior decorating of the little sacellu, the lower terrace was built with walls in cement like material and the facing in uncertain quasi reticulated work. The 14 barrel vaulted room, now collapsed, situated on the lower terrace, must have been service spaces fro the commercial functions of the sanctuary; for example, trade fairs, and markets that were periodically held there. It was perhaps a landslip in 2nd. Century A. D. that put an end to the life of the sanctuary.
