Article abstract
The profile of change within the North American tradition ofempirical psychology which opened the way to the empiricalstudy of the homosexual family is presented in this paper. Some suggestions as to the forces which seem to havefacilitated these changes at the research level are mentioned. Then the scientific issues in research on families of sexualminorities are discussed. Finally, a specific clinical field ofstudy, the study of conjugal relations, is introduced, toillustrate a) how studies comparing gay, lesbian andheterosexual couples have contributed to current models forexplaining conjugal distress, and b) how they open the way tothe formulation of general theories on conjugal adjustment.
