La Pearla 2012When choosing a title for this exhibition the words La Pearla seemed perfect. Not only were our friends from Autore Pearls in Australia unveiling a magnificent collection of gems and south sea pearls during the first few days of the exhibition, many of the paintings themselves were to feature pearls. The imagination took flight and lusterous works of art were envisioned on the gallery walls. As often happens, when we are fortunate, dreams are embraced and given life by others, in this case the wonderfully talented artists featured in this exhibition. Frances Davies - Director

This fabulous painting is a landmark work in many senses of the word. It is the initial piece in a new series of large circular paintings by Coney. Working in oils on the finest of canvases, Coney creates a delicious swirl of delicately painted petals.
Whilst circular works date back to Classical times and were a popular format of Renaissance artists, Coney’s powerful composition and vibrant use of colour introduces a bold sense of the modern. The choice of circular canvas mirrors nature’s unbroken cycle of seasons.

This significant, large-scale canvas by James Watkins is a key-note work which embodies the earlier Red Roof Series while referencing the exciting new Boathouse Series. The length of this work allows the artist to give free-reign to the composition of a mesmerising landscape which is both familiar and strange.
In this dramatic ‘big sky’ painting Watkins creates an expanse of rolling dark clouds against a vibrant background of Yves Klein blue. International Klein Blue (IKB) is a deep blue hue first mixed, and later patented, by the French artist Yves Klein. Its visual impact, seen to great effect in this latest work by James Watkins, comes from a heavy reliance on Ultramarine.
